Congratulations
Upon completion of this level you will have successfully
completed your Primary Kung Fu levels. From Red Sash
onwards you are in the secondary levels, much like High
School. With this also comes a higher degree of
responsibility (Yang) and accountability (Yin)!

Achieving the Red Sash is a bit like a mini Black Sash. If

you have completed the theory aspect of the KIiT or
Instructor Training Program you can choose to start
teaching Children. You may be assigned to assist an Instructor regularly (if you want). You will
more often than not be asked to be the Instructors demonstration partner. But as mentioned, this all
depends on you and your . . . Attitude.

This second part of your progress to Mastership is very significant. As you have setup a good habit
of training and performance so far (and this will get you through to Black Sash) you need to start
challenging yourself, upping the ante and setting up new and more proactive habits.

From Black Sash onwards, I become more of a Guide and Mentor rather than a Motivator and
Teacher. It is very much like going to a University. You choose the subjects and the path; Liang-I
will supply the support, help and guidance. But you will need to supply the Motivation and Energy!
In other words, will you continue to be a minimalist and just do what is required? Or will you
become proactive and start putting back into the club; only this will prepare you for a successful
path post Black Sash. If Black Sash is all you wish to achieve; youre fine the way you are. If you
wish to become a Shaolin Kung Fu Master, now is a good time to start going above & beyond.

This means that a higher degree of self-training and learning is required from you. It is the
equivalent of reaching your 21st Birthday and your parents telling you that it is time for you to see
the world. Once you reach Black Sash, to give you perspective but also opportunity, you will be
asked to spend a Journey Year; train other martial arts, possibly even achieve another Black Sash in
another style (which you should be able to do in a year or so as a Liang-I Black Sash). Then when
you come back to Liang-I training, it is no longer as a Junior but as a Brother; training to become a
Master.

Shaolin Temple the Legend

One of the reasons Shaolin is so well know is that is made it into the Cinemas! Would Paris be
more famous than
downtown Hamburg if
US Films would not
have made some many
films about the (Free)
Paris after the war in
the 50s? Would we
know so many US
citys if not for again
all the US films? But
to truly understand
Shaolin, we need to
separate ourselves
from the
interpretations of this
media and look at the
real Shaolin. For this
reason, a little bit of
history; but just the
key points.
Shaolin was built
around 495 CE
(Current Era rather
than referring to a
religion) as a
result of the
actions of a
Buddhist Monk
travelling though China from India. It was again a Indian Buddhist Monk and Prince who visited
Shaolin some 40 years later and instituted the 18 Hand Exercises. He was also the founder of the
Zen or Chien principle of Buddhism.

Buddhism had come to China officially for the first time during the Han Dynasty (25-220 CE) in the
form of two monks who came back with a Chinese delegation that was sent to India for this very
purpose. Buddhist monks She Moteng and Zhu Falahn came with a White Horse full of Buddhist
Sutras and Buddhist Figures. A temple was built for them to translate the sutras and spread the
word; the White Horse Temple.
There were many ups and down with Buddhism during its 2000 year history in China. Even the
Shaolin Temple did not always adhere to the pure Buddhism infusing it with Daoism and
Confucianism (the three major philosophies of china). Shaolin Temple come to Prominence during
the Tang Dynasty (618 - 907 CE). All of China
had one of its first Golden Eras during the Tang
Dynasty as it was a period of prosperity, cultural
growth and Buddhism.

The Tang Emperor came to power after a very

unruly period towards the end of the Sui
Dynasty. Only three years after coming to power
the Emperors son was captured in a battle by
one of the last remaining Sui Dynasty Generals.
Why the Emperor turned to Shaolin Monks for
help is not know but he did. The monks
consented to help as they were dependant on the
Emperors good will in many ways. In the battle
of Qianglingkou the troops of the Emperor with
the help of 13 Shaolin Monks under the
leadership of Monk Tang Zong were successful
in routing the rebels and saving the Emperors
son. When the Emperors son was crowned a few
years later he was very generous with Shaolin
monks and an era of very close cooperation
started between Shaolin and the Imperial Court.

It was a few decades later Pirate incursions in

prosperity in Southern China and the new dynasty needed help. At the Emperor's request, three of
the (now) legendary 13 Shaolin Cudgel fighting monks, Dao Guang, Seng Man and Seng Feng, led
approximately 500 warrior monks south in the early sometime around 650 CE. to engage in battle
against the pirates. They helped the Tang soldiers and the coastal area of Fukien was secure again.

It was a very important are in China at the time. It was a centre of commerce 500 years and more
before Shanghai was more than a village. The Tang Emperor bade the Shaolin to stay and gave them
a Temple in the Village of Putian.

Although there would have possibly been a number of Shaolin Temples, there are three more that
stand out an each of these has a reason for being Shaolin. But you would know this from reading the
Previous Workbooks!

Key events so far for Shaolin were

1. the Building of Shaolin by an Indian Buddhist
Monk named Ba Tuo.
2. the introduction of health giving exercises to
Shaolin by Bodhidharma also called Ta Mo
3. The 13 Cudgel Champions saving the Tang
Emperors son.
4. The Shaolin 500 establishing order in Fukien
and thus gaining the 2nd temple.
Around the 9th century still in the time of the Golden
Era of the Tang, three events came in a very short
succession, the least of this was the inclusion of the
Wudang Temple into the Shaolin Order. As Mt
Wudang came to prominence during the Tang Dynasty
is would be easy to reason that the Tang Emperor would have asked Shaolin to be involved and
given them a temple there..

It was towards the end of the Tang Dynasty when a rich and noble young man gifted in martial art
skills came to Shaolin. He was so good at what he did that the Shaolin Monks cooperated with him

in revising the 18 Hands Exercises to the 72 Fist Kung Fu. Yet as good as this was Chueh Yuan did
not feel that this was as good as it could be.

Travelling, he came
across an old man being
attacked. He want to the
aid of the old many but
unnecessarily. By the
time he reached him to
help the old man had
downed the attacker
without the use of much
force sending the
attacker to the ground,
seemingly unconscious by the time Chueh reached them. This maneuver obviously impressed
Chuan enormously and he introduced himself to the senior. Much to his surprise the old man did not
know much of martial arts and what little he knew he had learned from the local master Pai Yufeng.

Pai Yu-feng was a friendly 50 year

old and Chuan convinced him to
accompany him back to his temple.
Over the next few years they, using
the 18 fists, the 72 movements and
these 'pressure point techniques'
redeveloped Shaolin Kung Fu into
the 170 exercises. This being a
combination of grappling and
pressure point usage. Although
some credit him with the creation of
the Animal Styles this is not very
likely.

After the Tang Dynasty came a Short Unruly period which probably contributed to Martial Art
training being more wide spread. During the Song Dynasty (960 - 1279 CE) Civilian
organizations came to being that promoted and taught martial arts. This was a totally novel concept
hereto in the world. Some local masters took on apprentices or a family style was passed from one
generation to the next but having a School of kung fu was new.

Up until now only military organizations, occasional masters and of course Shaolin training martial
arts. Now there were commercial schools that also taught. This lead to the first Golden Era of
Martial Arts in China. Many even introduced the concept of Gradings!

The cat was out of the bag and it did not take long for numerous styles to come into existence. This
may also be a time where the concept of Style may have been founded outside of military
organizations and Shaolin. Again came another period of some unrest. There was some overlap
between the Liao Dynasty (916 - 1125 CE) and the Western Xia (1038 - 1227 CE) before the Yuan
Dynasty (1279 - 1368 CE) united China again. Martial Art continued to flourish during this Era.

Some organizations or clubs cantered on the use of spear play and cudgel, and they were called
Yinglue Organizations; while others majored in the practice of arching and therefore called Arching
Origination. Performer called Luqi People made a living by performing martial arts all over the
country. Usually the performances were carried out by a one or two people. It was in this time, when
martial arts flourished, that many picked up the concept of Animal Kung Fu!

Although there may have been Kung Fu styles that used Animal Symbolism, non recorded to this
time actually tried to emulate animals! It exploded. Some records suggested that this also happened
in Shaolin with possibly over 100 Animal, Insect, Bird and Reptile styles being recorded. Whilst
some of these did amount to full styles, many were only a small set of movements, possibly with
one or two secret technique that had a twist or some special movement. It was towards the start of
the Ming Dynasty where shaolin systemised all these styles into on Style represented by 5 facets; the
5 Animal Style.

Techniques that were based on Power and Strength were rolled together into Tiger; Styles that used
the Power of the Mind and Speed were allocated to the Panther; Styles that overcame greater
strength and speed were allocated to the Crane and styles that focused on Control and Knowledge of
the human body were allocated to the Snake. Yet, to complete the system, the Dragon was added to
represent the Development and Defence of the Human Chi. The concept was way ahead of its time
and reject by all except the Shaolin. It did lead to Animal Style combinations and there are some
exceptionally interesting single and two animal styles that came from this era, but nothing ever
achieved the completeness of Shaolin 5 Animal Kung Fu and most, even now days, still do not
understand the magnitude of what was created and how complete it is!

What we learn from allndthis?

There is no skill without foundation. Even a 2 rate martial artist will tell you that for this is not the
issue. The issue is, what is the foundation?? Often, the question is more important than the answer!
So here is the question . . .

If the foundation is so important, what part is the foundation and how deep does it need to be! Is the
foundation Strength, Speed, Stamina, Timing, Targeting, Technique, Flow, Foundation, Knowledge,
Experience, History . . . .what is the foundation to your martial arts?

Well this question you need to answer for yourself for only this way will it be of value as the
journey is more important than an answer. The world is full of answer, just go on the internet and
any question you ask, someone will give you the answer. The question is the key.

What is the most important of all foundations?

I (Sijo) have an answer, took me a while to get there but I now understand what is my most
important foundation. I understand that all my martial art life I have been working on this
foundations . . . and I still am.

Many martial arts have what they consider important. Following

are some examples from the WEB;
MMA - With today's tough competition, one of the key
aspects to becoming a successful mixed martial
arts fighter is impeccable information http://www.articlesbase.com/articletags/mixed-martial-arts
GMA - Your progress in the martial arts is
generally a result of three things: Training, Instruction, and Natural Attributes. This post is
relevant to the Training aspect, which in my opinion is the most important of the three. http://rizsmartialartstraining.blogspot.com/
RMA - Movement and control of balance and space are the key things we practice and we do this
through some highly unusual training methods. http://aberdeen.gumtree.com/aberdeen/28/23484228.html
(mma = Mixed Martial Arts, GMA = General, RMA = Russian . .)

Footwork, rapid hand work, listening to your teacher, know your patterns, apply it in the ring,
tradition, long line of unbroken ancestry . . . .and so on and so on.

When the propaganda and opinions are set aside than most experienced martial artists will agree on
many of the following key skills as being important in martial arts.
Foundation, footwork, balance & posture
Hand, eye, foot & movement coordination
Flexibility, agility, grace and elegance.
Timing, targeting, technique and delivery
Breath, core-strength, calm and alertness
Focus, self-control, discipline and clarity
Knowledge, skill experience and wisdom
And the list continues into everything a human being might want. But we still do not have an
answer as to what is What is the most important of all foundations in martial arts? I believe that
all this contributes to being a good martial artist but what is the most important?

And there again, we see that asking the right question eliminates a whole lot of marketing and wish
list answers. For, any answers you get come with a price, but do you always understand what the
price is and are you willing to pay for it?

If you find the answer yourself, you will have paid the price for it!

The 7 Senses of Focus

If we are to explore our ability to Focus, let us explore if there is more than one meaning to the
work and which of these we are focusing on. Read through the 7 senses of focus and see what you
think!

Sense 1

the concentration of attention or energy on something; ``the focus of activity

shifted to molecular biology''
concentration, engrossment, absorption - complete attention; intense mental effort

Sense 2

maximum clarity or distinctness of an image rendered by an optical system: in

focus; out of focus
distinctness, sharpness - the quality of being sharp and clear

Sense 3
maximum clarity or distinctness
of an idea; the controversy brought clearly into focus an important difference of opinion
clarity, lucidity, pellucidity, clearness, limpidity - free from obscurity and easy to
understand; the comprehensibility of clear expression
Sense 4
nidus - a central point or locus of
bacterial growth in an organism; the focus of infection
point - the precise location of something; a spatially limited location; she walked to a
point where she could survey the whole street
Sense 5
special emphasis attached to
something; the stress was more on accuracy than on speed
emphasis, accent - special importance or significance; the red light gave the central
figure increased emphasis; the room was decorated in shades of grey with distinctive
red accents
Sense 6
focal point - a point of
convergence of light (or other radiation) or a point from which it diverges
point - the precise location of something; a spatially limited location; she walked to a
point where she could survey the whole street
Sense 7

a fixed reference point on the concave side of a conic section

point - the precise location of something; a spatially limited location; she walked to a
point where she could survey the whole street

So, what do you think?

In our case we favour the definition in the first Sense;

Sense 1

focus, focusing, focussing, centring

the concentration of attention or energy on something; the focus of activity shifted to
molecular biology
concentration, engrossment, absorption - complete attention; intense mental effort

From this level onwards you are expected to be focused totally when training. This means that from
the time you walk onto the floor in the Kwoon, no matter which Kwoon (our training area, the
beach, a stage, the kung fu camp or anywhere where you are training kung fu) you need to be totally
focused!
From the time you bow into class to the time you bow out of class, focus entirely on the training,
learning and practice!
Sometimes, often, . . you come to class with things racing around in your mind. This can be very
dangerous at worst or very unproductive for you at best. When entering the Kwoon (any Kwoon)
'stop and take stock' of;
1 Where you are entering, is it safe, the right pace, etc.
2 What baggage you have in your mind that may/will distract you from training;
achieving best results today; and leave it at the door; it takes practice and a bit of time;
so be in class at least 10 minutes earlier).
3 What you wish to achieve today!

(Chinese Characters for focus)

You may find that these three steps help you achieve a greater success in what you wish to achieve;
in business (when meeting a client or vendor), in your private life (partner, parties and other
pleasures) and planning (lose all stray thoughts and focus on what is)!
This is a very good habit or way of working anyway! Anything that is worth doing, is worth doing
well or else you are wasting your time!

Social Life Balance

There are three groups of people we constantly interact with on a day to day basis that fulfil our
social needs. Each of these add to our lives in a different way and each requires different types of
human interaction skills. The three different groups of people you normally have very little to do
with each other (for the most). All they have in common is that they are defined by you as the
central figure. Each of these groups require your time and effort to maintain and improve.

Meeting, having a drink, casual encounters at work

can all be summarised as networking. There are even
basic rules for this conduct. Never get personal, stay
on the topic at hand, be clear, concise and
professional. Work colleagues often have specific
Roles that they have to fulfil in their jobs. Often this
is how you get to know them and how we relate to
them. They are the PA, Project Manager, Boss,
assistant, etc. Often these roles also define our
relationship with them and a code of conduct.
"In poverty and other misfortunes of life, true friends
are a sure refuge. The young they keep out of
mischief; to the old they are a comfort and aid in
their weakness, and those in the prime of life they
incite to noble deeds." - Aristotle Beecher
Whereas friends are a totally different lot. Often with our friends we dont want professional but
friendly, supportive and personal behaviour. But just like at work, friends often also have specific
functions like ones for going out clubbing, for movies or videoing, long walks at the beach,
shopping, getting sloshed, gaming, etc. Rarely do we have all around friends with which we can do
almost everything but generally we do have at least one.

A Family is not that different. They also have Roles; mothers, fathers, sisters, uncles, cousins,
grand-parents, etc. Yes, the way we behave with our family is different than with the other two
groups and that is as it should be, and that is also the key.

Each of these groups fulfils a need within us and there is a balance between these three. It seems
that when we neglect any of these groups we can Socially, Spiritually fall out of balance. Just like
money budgeting we need to allocate our time resources to fulfil all of our needs to stay in balance.
We sometimes get into a rut, work too much, have a blue with someone and this balance may get
very upset. All of a sudden we may be feeling that we do not get what we need from our friends,
workmates or family.
Do not keep the alabaster boxes of your love and tenderness
sealed up until your friends are dead. Fill their lives with
sweetness. Speak approving cheering words while their ears
can hear them and while their hearts can be thrilled by them.
--Henry Ward Beecher

We have a spiritual budget, an amount of energy that we can spend and need to spend with and on
other people. It is very much like investing money you have. Smart people diversify their
investments so as not to put all their eggs in one basket. And just like investments return dividends,
our time with friends return spiritual dividends. Depending on the quality of our relationships a bad
day can turn into a good day, a boring evening can be filled with excitement, a bad incident can be
shared and become half as bad, a good experienced can be relived by telling your friends.

These relationships can be very, very powerful. Whats more, they influence your physical, mental
and spiritual health and well being to a much higher degree than you may be aware!

There are however types of people to be wary of. Below is a listing of some that I have identified
and given a suitable title to!

"The family is one of nature's masterpieces." George Santayana (1863-1952)

Psychic Vampires

L5 - Shaolin Shaolin

seem like very nice people but for some reason, somehow every time you
spend time with them, afterwards you feel spiritually drained. They seem to
suck the life out of you. Unless we are aware of this, we may not notice. Now
any relationship can have this effect on us sometimes but there are some
people who have this effect on us most the time. These are difficult to spot
and notice unless you are looking for them.

"Of all the things which wisdom provides to make us

entirely happy, much the greatest is the possession
of friendship." - Epicurus

Dream Steelers

are those who tell us all the things that are impossible, what we cant do, what
cannot be done, what is useless to try. They often mask themselves by saying
they are concerned for your health and well-being. And this works well as
they sound almost exactly like someone who genuinely cares for you. They
try and limit your success. They are or can be very difficult to identify and
distinguish from people who genuinely care for you. If you find someone who
seems to be constantly (well almost) telling you what cant be done, have a
closer look at them.

I, me & my selfs

They are the ones who never really laugh at you jokes, listen to your stories
and experiences and almost always have a better joke, story and experience to
tell than you. They often use words like thats nothing compared to . . ., not
as bad as what I experienced and similar.

Otherers

Theyre the ones who talk about how good other peoples achievements are
(compared to yours or even theirs), how much better, famous or richer; but
never really tell you how good you are. They dwell on the achievements of
people they have read about, herd about but never say anything good about
you and never really do anything themselves!

Gunna Doers

L5 - Shaolin Shaolin

Monday, tomorrow, later, not right now, will be done for sure, absolutely,
promise . . . are the sounds that these people make and really mean . . except
that it never happens on time, or they way it was expected and agreed or even
just never happens. These are dangerous because they often work in
professions where customers or people rely on them. Watch out for these.

I know besterers

are those who have read a lot and translate this into not only knowing (sight
unseen) everything but representing it as (almost) their own experiences and
wisdom. Which in turn, turns you into being wrong and unknowing all the
time.

Missionaries

closely related to a few of the above always know whats best for you better
than you do. These are particularly dangerous as they genuinely mean well
and think that they are saving you from yourself or whoever else. They
believe that god or the ultimate truth is on their side!

I Promisers

These are the people who promise something and never keep it. Oh yes
everybody will occasionally promise something they cannot deliver but these
people make a habit of it; both the promoting and the not delivering!

Yea, buters

I agree but; you are right but; I will do it but; yes I stuffed up but . . .

Before we jump the gun, we are and so is everybody a bit of all of those above. At one time or
another we display these characteristics. So do not be too quick to make a decision. Like wild life,
you need to observe over a longer period and make sure that it is not just a phase that someone is
going through. You may wish to even speak to this person about YOUR FEELINGS, explaining
that this is the way you are interpreting their behaviour and that you are not judging them. For what
is friendship when youre not being genuine with each other!

Finally, when all is said and done and we take the sum of our lives, look back at our
accomplishments we often forget that it was our ability to have friends and family that made it all
worth while. For why did we accomplish all that we did if not for other human beings and
ourselves! What are your friends to you, and what are you prepared to do to keep them and improve!

ME
Yet, when all is said and done, external needs addressed & all the roles played there is one need that
generally looses out. It is ME time!

We all need ME time; time for ourselves, by ourselves and with

ourselves! This is evident in our daily lives. We need a time to centre
ourselves, be one by ourselves and think only of
ourselves. This can be mistaken for being ego centred
and it is, for a specific time.

There is a drive with in us that we call self-preservation.

This requires of us to take care of ourselves, be healthy, fit
and well. We need to devote 30 minutes a day to just thinking
about ourselves, our needs and sorting out our thoughts,
relationships - lives into a natural (for us) priority!

Consider this; what use are we to our friends, family or work if

we are sick and unwell. Yes we can go to
doctors and naturopaths, etc., and throw
money at them to make us well again.
But this is not the natural flow of things.

This 30 minutes is not spent doing anything else except letting our mind flow, considering all the
hats (roles parent, sibling, worker, boss, martial artist, etc.) that we have and be aware what and
who is important to us.

This allows our three levels of mind to synergise and come to some conclusions. From this we then
decide what is best for us. How much exercise we do, meditation, which food we eat, variety and
simply what we need to do for ourselves to maintain our health, vigour and vitality.

Let us go back to a principle from the first level book, Stop and Take stock; for this is what I am
talking about. Allow me to introduce you to the SLAM DUNK systems of review, planning and
sanity check.

Needs
To help with the Life Planning and ME time it is good to understand NEEDS. What is the
difference between Needs & Wants.

Well we need to eat, sleep, breath, develop and survive. OK, but really, what are Needs and where
do they come from and how do they influence our behaviour and outlook on life? Following is one
possible definition, as defined by Abraham Maslow.

Needs are the basic drivers or motivators that enable us to live and develop. For example, would we
eat if our body did not Need the nourishment to survive? How about another 6 to 8 hours more time
per day if we did not Need to sleep! Think of all the money you would save if you did not Need
protection from the weather!

So Needs seem to be the things that we require to survive, well not quite. That's were a gentleman
by the name of Maslow defined needs into 5 levels (there is that 5 again).
Needs are REAL (food, air, love) - Wants are PERCEIVED
Maslow recognised human needs into 5 hierarchal levels. It seems that the requirement of each level
have to be satisfied to a certain degree before we feel up to looking at the next level. Let's have a
look at these levels;

Physiological or Basic Needs

 Self Actualisation

We need food and water, physical protection from

weather and a place to sleep. These needs have to be

 Esteem or Recognition

satisfied with almost any living creature as a basic for

 Social or Affiliation

survival.

 Safety or Security

Food - Shelter/Safety - Immediate Needs

Safety or Growth Needs

Together with the need to be and feel safe and secure, these two basic levels have to be satisfied
before we can even look at the high three! Safety Needs includes that we have enough to eat in the
future, enough clothing to really keep warm and that our shelter will protect us from predators.

We have these basic levels of Need in common with most animals and wild life. Many animals live
in herds to cover their protection and security needs choosing a leader, one who is most able to
protect the herd/group and supply their current and future needs!
Security - Growth - Future

Social or Affiliation Needs

It is evident that the levels run into each other. We seem to
cover the first of our higher needs of social interaction by
satisfying one of our basic needs of protection and living in
groups or herds. It seems that once our basic needs are
meet, we Need to come together with common minded
people. Family and friends come into this category,
although both also help to cover the security aspect
of our Needs.
Family - Friends - Common Interest

Ego or I Needs
You have a home, a place to sleep, enough to eat. You are secure in your surroundings, have a job
and friends. You have enough resources to live well and have a bit of spare time. What now?

Maslow believes that you would now work on your prestige, your view of yourself and how others
would see you. You would work on increasing your Mind Power and the influence (face) you have
with your fellow human being.
Power - Prestige - Self View

Esteem or Recognition
This is the ultimate Need, a Need that only begins to dominate
your behaviour once you have satisfied most of the lower order
Needs. This is where artists try to express themselves on canvas,
wood or other. This is where a scientist aims for that
breakthrough, the competitor for the gold medal. Even with
these achievements, the last two Needs, often, will never be
satisfied!
Self Actualisation - Development - Ultimate Goals

Needs Summary
This Needs hierarchy seems logical but is not proven! It is often used for understanding and
guidance and that is how we use it. Liang-I Shaolin Kung Fu needs to be set up and run in such a
way that you, the student, future Instructors and Masters, can use what you have learned with us to
help you achieve all 5 levels of needs!

Although Liang-I gives you the opportunity to satisfy all your needs and practice all aspects, we
really focus on Self Actualisation; for realising your potential is the path of the Dragon!

Entering the Mouth of P'eng-li Lake

Hsieh Ling

A traveller tires of nights on the water.

The wind and tides are unpredictable:
Around islets they suddenly swerve and rejoin,
And the banks often come crashing down.
By moonlight I hear the mournful gibbons,
And dampened by dew, I smell fragrant iris.
At spring's end, the green wilds flourish;
Where the cliffs rise highest, white clouds amass.
A thousand memories gather day by night,
A myriad of sorrows brim dawn and dusk.
Scaling cliffs, I find my reflection in Stone Mirror,
Parting the leaves, I enter Pine Gate.
The stories of the Three Rivers are mostly lost,
The Nine Tributaries exist only in name.
The marvels here begrudge their curious treasures;
The Immortals withhold their ethereal souls.
The Essence of Gold has doused its bright light,
The Liquid Jade has stopped its radiant flow.
In vain I play the Thousand-Mile Song;
The strings snap and memories multiply.

Renew and Review

SR Coves 7 Habits

Learning Efficiently (Guide 5)

What do we remember and what do we forget? Well we forget
what we forget to remember! You think this is stupid logic? Well
it isnt. Let me explain.

1. Be Pro-active
2. First things first (What
Matters Most)

SR Covey lists Renew and Review as one of the 7 Habits of

Highly Successful People. The reasoning for this is that this

3. Start with the End in mind

habit, skill, task, fulfils two major functions;

4. Think Win-Win
YANG It reminds you to remember what you have learned.

5. Seek first to understand

before you seek to be

YIN It allows you to put what you have learned into the

understood

bigger picture of your life and learning.

6. Synergise
In other words, if you recap on what you have learned, you will
remember it better and you have had time to put it into
perspective of your other learnings; this allows you to link to

7. Renew and Review

8. Enjoy Life

what you have learned, stop & take stock . . . well in reality this
is a stop and take stock, just with a slightly more specific and
wider focus! In a way, the first part of the circle closes, much
like the first part of your training closes on this level by a total
regrade of everything you have learned before you commence on
the senior levels!

Training Tip:
If you review an item you have learned within the
first 24 hours of learning it you increase your chance
of remembering it by 500%

Level 5 Vital Points, Shoulder & Pelvic Points

If what you are being attacked with, no longer functions as well as the attacker expects, you have
gained a valuable
psychological, tactical and
physical advantage. You
will most likely be attacked
by either hands or feet and
in this level we focus at the
points from which they
emanate.

Just where your chest

muscles join into your
shoulder joint is a weak
area not protected by
muscles (arrows). Just
under this point is the
Brachial Plexus, which is a nerve complex for the respective arm. It is also the centre for some of
the tendons in your arm. It is also a key point for Chi flow and tendon movement!

A strike to either of these points with a ginger fist, dragon fist, phoenix fist, sword edge or vertical
spear hand could result in a temporary in anything from a total usage of the limb for seconds,
minutes or in extreme cases days to just a loss of strength and pain.
The effect can be seen within a few seconds of application and will, when correctly applied have
limiting results on the use of the limb or joint; which effectively reduces the use of the limb against
you in a defence situation.

The Standard Liang-I Fighting Stance guard is very adequate to protecting the points that we have
covered so far, including these. This is different for the next two points; the pelvic joints.
The hip joint is rarely seen as a vital point and yet it is possibly one of the most unappreciated
points of all!

As can be seen in the picture below there is a vital point for movement of the legs. Should this be
impacted fairly solidly (not to hard or else it disjoints) it can cause similar effects as previously with
the shoulder joints. The most likely attack would be with a toe kick straight into where the upper leg
bends forward when sitting. Right into that crease by the bladder at about a 20 angle to the
horizontal. A Panther or Dragon fist would also work well as would a hand edge from the side. If a
side kick is positioned correctly, angle and blade, this would cause the most amount of damage.

The standard Liang-I guard protects most of our body and head points, to protect this point we need
to use either the lower block, gate block or leg block; depending on the type of attack.
My preference is the three handed guard (Crane Stance with guard) as it interferes with the attacker
setting you up for a counter attack with a front or side kick or a leap forward attack.
In the next book we look at the elbow and knee joints.

Progress
It is good to appreciate what we have achieved! From Shaolin 5 Animal Kung Fu point of view
there are initially two major reasons;
1. If we do not appreciate our success, both small and large; we will cease to succeed!
2. How we achieve our initial improvements/success is NOT how we continue to achieve
improvements/success. We need to recognise when old habits & methods no longer work!

For this reason it would be a very good idea, once you have received this book, to record the
following details;
