Deaf Sentence questions

So, what did you think?

On page 14, Desmond Bates writes Deafness is comic, as blindness is tragic. What are your reflections on this? Can dementia be comic? Desmond Bates occasionally writes in third person. Bates states that he used to set first and third person exercises with his students. On page 11 he asks: What difference does it make to the effect? Is one method more appropriate to the original experience than another, or does any method interpret rather than represent experience? Discuss. Deaf Sentence is full of sub-plots; what do you think is the main plot, if indeed there is one? What did you think of the Alex Loom plot? Did it underpin the story or hinder it? How does Lodge / Bates use humour? (defence mechanism, highlight issues like deafness & dementia) Has this book changed your attitude towards the hearing impaired? Would you want to meet any of the characters? Do you think Desmond would have continued his journal? What future events might occur? Would you recommend Deaf Sentence to a friend? ***************************************************** Page 43 mobile on quiet coach Page 112 marked library books Beginning of chapter 11 experience of 7 July 2005 bombing and months after.

I cannot rate this item honestly as it was ordered for our book club and is not due to be read until May 2010 please ignore the rating but you cannot post a review without a rating. Our book club is organised up to eighteen months ahead; each host selecting the choice of the month and hosting the meeting; altenating between afternoons and evenings.

Groinhammer says: Mrs Mitchell - I realise that Amazon prompt you to supply a review on a purchase, but it is not required until after you have read/used/thrown it away. In fact you are not obliged to supply a review at all, and being an automated system I am of the opinion its feelings would not be hurt were you to ignore the prompt. In order to prevent unfairly rating this or any other purchases I would suggest you refrain from this knee jerk reaction you have adopted with any past or future publications bought for your book club. Mrs. Katharine Kirby says: What an amazingly organised book club! It sounds like a military operation. Have a glance through the reviews you are contributing to and you will come to see that one such as yours is unnecessary. Have another go when you've read it, do. Reply to this post
