Course Content: Geotechnics : I Introduction: Definition, brief history, scope, and limitations of Geotechnics. II Origin and nature of soil: Geological cycle, physical and chemical agencies for soil, Formation - residual, transported, cumulose, alluvial, marine and lacustrine, loess and colluvial soils. General characteristics of different types of soils. Overview of different types of soils in Gujarat / India. III Index properties, Relationships and Tests: Phase diagram, Basic terms and definitions, functional relationships, determination of index properties, relative density for granular soil. IV Particle size analysis: Size and nomenclature of soil particles as per BIS, Sieve analysis, Sedimentation analysis, particle size distribution curve and its uses. V . Soil structure: Shape of the particles , texture and structure of the soil. Types of the structure, properties, conditions for the formation of different structures. VI Soil consistency: Consistency limits and its determination, different indices, field moisture equivalent, activity, sensitivity & thixotropy of soil. VII Soil classification: Objectives, basis, Textural, Unified soil classification, IS classification method, group index. Field identification and general characteristics of the soil. VIII Soil water: Free water and held water, structural water and absorbed water, capillary water. Total stress, Neutral stress and Effective stress. IX Permeability and seepage : Darcy's law and its validity, factors affecting permeability, laboratory permeability tests, introduction to field permeability test, permeability of stratified soil masses, Laplace equation (2-D), seepage pressure, quick condition, flow net, its characteristics and application. Applied Geology: I Geological exploration: surface exploration, topographical and geological features, geological mapping, techniques in brief, interpretation of geological reports and case studies of engineering structures. II Dam-site and reservoir: Geological investigation of site, site selection criteria, ground water and geological conditions of dam-site and reservoir site, damsite in seismic zone. III Tunneling: Geological investigation at tunneling site, bridging capacity of rocks, difficulties encountered during tunneling. IV Land slides: Types, causes and prevention of land slides, influence of dip and slope, stability of hill slopes. V Roads and bridges: Geological consideration for highways, weathering and ground water problems in highway embankments, roads in hilly terrain bridge foundation consideration. VI Geo-hydrology: Water holding properties of rocks, investigation and mapping of ground water table, effects of cone of depression, and effects of ground water at engineering structures. Term Work Term work shall be based on the above mentioned course content. Field Visit: Field visits based on course content are suggested.
