Geography Corner: Teachers Notes


This series of four books introduces children to key concepts in geography. They can be used for geography work, such as investigating features of the landscape and for local study. These books can also be used for literacy work, as they feature many examples of report text including: Features of Report Text which you can find in these books include contents, * maps * diagrams non-chronological * present tense * Photographs headings captions and labels * * Index, Additional text type: Instructions for final activity * Glossary

Photocopiable masters

A photocopiable worksheet is available for each book in this series. These enable you to ensure that the children have grasped key ideas from the books. The children will need to have access to the books in order to complete the worksheets. Use the worksheets in a guided reading session, for topic-based group work or even for homework

Instructions for the Coast worksheet:

Children should identify the pictures used in the book and discuss similarities and differences. Encourage them to use information in the book, as well as their own experiences to decide which information to include on their posters. Remind them to use bright colours and large lettering so their posters can be easily seen and read.

Instructions for the Mountains worksheet:

Children should use the contents and index to find the relevant topics in the book. Encourage them to shut the book and reword the information rather than copying from the book.

Instructions for the Rainforests worksheet:

Before starting to find information in the book, talk about what the children remember. Children should use the contents and index to find the relevant topics in the book.

Instructions for the Rivers worksheet:

Look at the pictures. What do children remember about each stage? All of the information needed is in the book. Encourage children to use captions, fact buttons and pictures as well as main text.
