along with the

dermal and subcutaneous layers of the skin. The infection is often caused by microorganisms normally present in the skin or by streptococcal or staphylococcal bacteria that enter the skin through a cut, blister, burn, or insect bite. Cellulitis can occur in any part of the body but usually appears on the face or lower legs. Cellulitis treatment is done to relieve the pain and other symptoms, hasten recovery and heal the skin.Cellulitis often begins as a small area of redness and pain on the skin. Surrounding tissues soon become affected and result in inflammation with redness, swelling, pain and warmth.

A fever may develop and the person affected may experience swollen lymph nodes in the infected area. Chills and sweats may accompany the fever.Aside from the lower legs and face, cellulitis can develop in the arm and neck area. The abdomen and chest can also be affected. Special types of cellulitis can develop and they are designated by the location of the infected area. Thus, there is periorbital cellulitis (around the eye socket), buccal cellulitis (cheek), facial cellulitis and perianal cellulitis.

Elderly people and those with weakened immune systems are prone to cellulitis. Diabetics and those with varicose veins and poor blood circulation in the legs and feet are also vulnerable to the disease.Antibiotics are vital in cellulites treatment. They may be taken orally or as a topical cream or ointment applied directly to the skin. For severe cases of cellulitis, hospitalization may be required and antibiotics can be administered intravenously. If not treated appropriately, the bacterial infection can spread throughout the body and may result in serious illness. Oral antibiotics include penicillin and its derivatives. Dicloxacillin, cephalosporin, erythromycin or vancomycin can also be used. Mild cases of cellulitis can be treated with topical antibiotics. Intravenous antibiotics for the treatment of cellulitis include nafcillin, levofloxacin and cephalosporin. The location and severity of the infection will determine the type of antibiotic is used. When cellulitis occurs in the leg or arm, treatment can include elevating the affected limb to reduce swelling.

Cellulitis is not contagious but those who are at risk of contracting the infection should take the necessary preventive steps such as proper skin hygiene. People with edema can wear support stockings while obese individuals can work on shedding excess fat. Cellulitis treatment should not be limited to healing the infection but should also focus on prevention.
