Train for a
career in finance
PETALING JAYA: If you have wanted to build
a career in the financial sector, you now have
the chance to do so under the Financial Sector
Talent Enrichment Programme’s (FSTEP) pre-
selected scheme.
Financial institutions are selecting candidates
for the programme’s fourth intake which begins
July 6, FSTEP head Lee Khee Joo said.
“Financial institutions will soon send candi-
dates for the interview process. If they pass the
tests and interview, they will be accepted into
the programme,” he said.
The interview process includes an English
proficiency test, Harrison Assessment test and
a final verbal interview with a panel comprising
FSTEP senior management and representatives
of the financial services industry.
“There are 122 financial institutions in the
country and if each of them has at least one
candidate, we will have 120 participants to enrol
for the fourth intake,” Lee said.
The programme, managed by the Bankers
Institute Malaysia (IBBM), enables financial insti-
tutions to be involved in the selection process.
“Under the previous scheme, participants
were selected and recruited by FSTEP and their
scholarship allowances sponsored by the Staff
Training Fund managed by IBBM,” Lee said.
With the revised scheme, he said, financial
institutions will pre-select their own candidates,
where the company will sponsor a monthly
scholarship allowance of RM2,200 and provide
on-the-job training for each of its candidates
throughout the one-year programme.
Upon graduation, candidates will have the
opportunity to join the respective financial
institutions.
“The scheme is a win-win situation for all – the
financial institutions and IBBM as well as the par-
ticipants,” IBBM CEO Dr Mohd Kamal Khir said.
Registration for the July intake is open to
Malaysians below age 30 with a Cumulative
Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 3.25 and above
in any discipline from institutions of higher
learning locally and overseas.

after yacht capsizes
KUANTAN: An American diver is missing and
four others were injured when the yacht they
were sailing on was hit by an unknown ves-
sel about 31 nautical miles off Kuantan Port,
around 4am yesterday.
Kuantan police chief ASP Mohd Jasmani
Yusoff said the missing victim was 62-year-
old Kenneth Wayne.
Wayne’s Irish friend James Edward, 27,
and a Thai cook, Butsara Tom Tantak Suwan,
31, sustained severe injuries and were
warded at Tengku Ampuan Afzan Hospital.
The captain of the yacht, known only
as Anon and a crewman, Papop, both from
Thailand, suffered minor injuries.
The victims were rescued by a local fishing
boat a few hours after the collision.
“The yacht entered Kuantan waters at
about 4am yesterday to enable the diver to
take underwater pictures around the diving
areas,” said Mohd Jasmani. – Bernama

‘Pick PKA GM from among

serving officers’
PORT KLANG: The MTUC yesterday urged
the Transport Ministry to revert to the
old system of appointing the Port Klang
Authority general manager from among
serving officers.
MTUC vice-president A. Balasubrama-
niam said the GM’s post was a key posi-
tion having to deal with various grades of
employees numbering 20,000 and about
400 companies using the port’s facilities.
“Moreover, modern port operations
are sophisticated and the general man-
ager should be familiar with the technical
and administrative issues to ensure its
smooth running. An experienced hands-
on person with extensive knowledge
would be ideal,” he said.
Balasubramaniam was commenting
on the recent resignation of PKA general
manager Lim Thean Shiang. His replace-
ment is yet to be named. – Bernama
