Anderson, Jodi. May Bird and the Ever After. New York: Scholastic Inc. 2005. 317 pgs. 1. The protagonist in May Bird and The Ever After is May Ellen Bird. May is a skinny 11 year old girl in the 5th grade. She has short black hair and big brown eyes. May has a great imagination, is very kind, and is also very smart but she is a very shy person and isnt good at making friends. Her only friend is her cat Somber Kitty which she does everything with. May is a dynamic character because she learns from her mistakes throughout the story and becomes very bold and brave. The antagonist in the story would have to be the Bogeyman. The Bogeyman wears a dark suit and top hat; he has snow white hair and his chin sticks out long like a hook. He also has white eyes and sharp pointed teeth. At the tip of the Bogeymans finger he can suck ghosts, ghouls, animals, people, and almost everything into nothingness (which is worse than dying). The Bogeyman is a static character because he never changes how is in the book and because he only has one trait-being evil and cruel. 2. The setting of the story takes place in Briery Swamp, West Virginia and also in a place called the Ever After. It is present day time and the whole story has a very dark, gloomy mood to it. Briery Swamp is a small town with which no one really lives except for very few people, like May and her mother. It is surrounded by the woods with which May goes to adventure in with her cat. The Ever After is in a whole other world far from Briery Swamp and even Earth. This is where all the dead go from Earth. 3. The first main event was when May found an old letter containing a map and stating that someone needed her help, even though the date said it was from 1951. The second main event in the story was when May followed the map leading to a lake and something took her underwater. The third main event was when May escaped with Pumpkin and went on a boat going to Belle Morte. The fourth main event was when May and Pumpkin were going to Nine Knaves Grotto and met Lucius and John the Jibber. The climax was when May, and Pumpkin made it to the city of Ether but John fell into the incarnerator. The sixth main event was when May reunited with Pumpkin and they met Beatrice and Fabio. The seventh main event was when May, Beatrice, Fabio, Pumpkin, and John made it into the Eternal Edvice. The eighth main event was when May read the book of the dead and when the Bogeyman turned John into nothingness.

The ninth main event was when May escaped onto the train heading north with Pumpkin, Beatrice, and Fabio. The ending was when the train started going through snow and May and Pumpkin fell asleep side by side. 4. One theme in the story was the power of friendship. An example was how May and Pumpkin stood by one another no matter what happened. Even though Pumpkin was scared to go into the Catacombs he stuck with may no matter what. Another theme in the story is to always believe in yourself and to never give up. An example was when May took off her death shroud to try and save John the Jibber. 5. The rising action in the story was when May and Pumpkin were in Belle Morte and when they were headed to Nine Knaves Grotto and went through the Catacombs. The main conflict in the story would have to be May figuring out how to get back home to Briery Swamp. The climax was when May, and Pumpkin made it to the city of Ether but John fell into the incarnerator. The falling action was when May ventured through the city of Ether and made it into the Eternal Edvice and read the book of the dead. The resolution in the story was when May, Pumpkin, Beatrice, and Fabio were headed to north farm on a train.
