MEMBERS RETIRE... (L to R) After 110-plus years of combined service on the Fulton County Fair Board, Carl Buehrer, Al Garrow, Richard Mull, and Curt Johnson retire from the Board, and look forward to attending the Fair as civilians. All four men are confident in the future growth and continued success of the Fair.

WAUSEON (Ohio) -- Carl Buehrer. Al Garrow. Curt Johnson. Richard Mull. If you've lived in Fulton County for any length of time -- say, more than 15 minutes -- you probably know that these names are synonymous with the Fulton County Fair. During their collective 100-plus years service on the 15-seat Fulton County Fair Board, the Fair has come to be recognized as one of the best -- if not the best -- county fair in Ohio and the tri-state region. After the 2012 Fair, Carl, Curt, and Al decided not to run for additional terms on the Fair Board. That means they'll be attending this year's Fulton County Fair as "civilians" for the first time in decades. If they need pointers, they can turn to Richard for advice; he retired in 2011 and experienced his first "nonboard-member" Fair last year. "I enjoyed it," Richard said. "For the first time in 31 years, I actually got to see a concert and the tractor pulls!" FOUR SIMPLE RULES
rules helped the board to come together." Once it came together, there was no stopping it. EXTRAORDINARY GROWTH In the four decades since Carl was first elected Fair Board president, attendance at the Fair has increased from 100,000 to a record 282,417 set in 2010. The Fairgrounds have grown from 48 to nearly 200 acres, with 15 new buildings, five new restrooms, and space to accommodate 600 campers. Two miles of road have been added, as well as 80 acres of parking -- an absolute necessity when 70,000-plus people may decide to pay the Fulton County Fair a visit on a single day during Fair Week. "We've invested in so many things on the Fairgrounds," noted Richard, who was responsible for the Midway for many years. "I always said I had the best job on the Fair Board. I sent out contracts to vendors, collected payments, and accounted for all the funds. I worked with the vendors, got to know them -- and some of them have been coming since I was first on the Board." During Richard's tenure on the Board, the total number of Midway rides, food stands, games, and merchants nearly doubled to 200. To provide the electricity they required -- as well as the power needed by the ever-growing army of campers who set up housekeeping on the Fairgrounds each year -- the Fair Board has made $2 million in electrical updates over the past three decades, along with major water and sewer improvements. Al Garrow, who headed up the Junior Fair for many years, measures Fair growth a different way. "Seeing the Junior Fair kids come in with projects their first year, shy and not talking, to seeing them raise their hand, talking, opening up their lives to other kids: that's my favorite thing about being on the Fair Board," he said. HARD WORK AND INGENUITY As Fair Board members, Carl, Curt, Richard, and Al -- as well as many of their spouses and children -- each volunteered upwards of seven full weeks a year. They showed up faithfully at weekly work nights from May through August, put in 18 hours a day during Fair Week -- and nearly as many the week before and after. And then there were the projects that demanded even ... CONTINUED ON PAGE 2
Richard, 75, a Wauseon resident who PRO PULLER ... Deena with Daniel Perez who is a pro puller and one of the founders of NWO (Northwest Ohio Arm Wrestling Team). represented York Township, and Curt
By: Storm Humbert THE REPORTER Deena Haynes was born and raised in Northwest Ohio. She is a 1986 graduate of Archbold High School and now resides in Stryker. This past weekend, anyone who attended the Fayette Bullthistle Festival may have seen Deena. She participated in the 1st Annual Pulling for JP & KK Charity Arm Wrestling Memorial Tournament as a professional exhibitor. Thats right; Deena is a professional arm wrestler, one of the best in the world. Deenas first arm wrestling (or pulling as its called by the competitors) experience was in 2004 at Michigan State. I got second place and had never pulled before, Deena said. It just wasnt in the cards to continue training at the time though. I still had two kids at home, work, and family was just my priority. However, in 2009 Deena started training again and went to the Arkansas Nationals where she won first in three of the classes she entered and second in the fourth. Classes in arm wrestling are a numerous. They are divided by weight only in the open class. After that, there are age classes (such as 40-49 or Masters Class which Deena participates in), and of course classes divided by right and left handed competitors. The classes that Deena took at Arkansas were the right and left hand Masters Classes (first in right hand and second in left). She is a professional puller, but this has nothing to do with winnings or drafting or anything like that. It simply is a specification given to pullers good enough to win State and National competitions. Winning the Nationals in Arkansas put Deena on the list to travel to Italy with Tam USA for international competition. While overseas, Deena recorded two fourth places, a sixth place, and a seventh place finish in the world in various classes. I was pretty excited about that! said Deena. After this though, Deena said. Life got in the way again and there just wasnt enough time and money to train and go to tournaments. So, Deena entered another brief retirement, but its over now as she has recently gotten back in the game and hopes to make another international appearance. Deena is currently the Michigan State Womens Left and Right hand open title holder after going undefeated in the tournament. I was so excited to get back into competing, Deena said. On a whim I decided to travel to Wisconsin for this years nationals where I won first place Left Handed and took third place in the Right handed class. The first place finish qualified Deena for this years world tournament in Gdynia, Poland. In the ... CONTINUED ON PAGE 9
Johnson, 70, of Fayette, Chesterfield Township's representative, joined the Fair Board in 1981. Al Garrow, 51, Lyons, came on board in 1999 after serving two years on the Fair Board Auxiliary. All three had been involved in 4-H as kids and took projects to the Fair. Richard was even Junior Fair King in the mid-1950s Carl, however, was a different story. When he was a boy, his family couldn't afford for him to take part in the Fair. In 1972, when he was asked to serve out the term of the Fair Board member representing Pike Township, he agreed, but the next year, when he was nominated for Fair Board president, he was upfront about his inexperience. "I told them I didn't know anything about a Fair," recalled Carl, now 75 and a resident of Delta. "However, I said I'd do it if everyone agreed to a few simple rules. "First, there'd be no more 'I/me.' From now on, it had to be 'we/us.' Second, if you're given an assignment, it's yours and yours only. If someone has a problem with what you're doing, they must discuss it you, not other people. Third, no party politics. And finally, if you're elected to the Fair Board, your spouse and family will be working at the Fair, too. "They must have agreed, because I was elected president. And those simple

more of their time, not to mention their ingenuity. "It took us nearly a year to plan and execute the relocation of the Dairy, Beef and Steer Barns from the Midway to their current location at the south end of the Fairgrounds in 1995," Richard said. "Curt and I were also quite involved in reducing the size of the barn that now houses sheep. We had a plan to cut it in half and reattach one end of it to create a smaller building. Everyone we brought in to look at it said it wouldn't work. I told Curt, 'We're the only two who don't know it can't be done.' But it worked just the way we thought it would. It was a team effort." Despite their hard work, these former Fair Board members refuse to take credit for the Fair's remarkable success on their watch. "We never forgot that the Fair was successful because of the community," Carl stressed. "I served with 58 different board members during my time, and I remember all the good things they did. Hundreds of volunteers and organizations throughout Fulton County make this Fair possible. And we always did our best to listen to the community and give them what they wanted at a price a family could afford." PASSING THE TORCH Although they attribute the length of their Fair Board service to much the same reasons --"It gets in your blood," "It was like family," I enjoyed it, It was like a hobby, -- the factors that led them to retire were quite different. Richard had heart surgery and thought it might be time for new people and ideas on the Board. Al is battling lymphoma. Carl felt that, after 40 years, his family deserved more of his time. And Curt was nudged into thoughts of retirement during the 2012 Fair when he saw a small child in the Dairy Barn and realized that his great grandfather had been showing cattle when Curt first joined the Board. As the 2013 Fulton County Fair approaches, all four men are optimistic about the future of the Fair under new Fair Board President Dennis Wyse, who previously served as vice president. "We all knew that it wasn't 'our Fair' more than anyone else's," said Curt, a sentiment echoed by his fellow retirees. "It was just our turn to keep it going. Now it's theirs. If they work as a team and respect one another, they'll do fine." The 2013 Fulton County Fair runs from Friday, August 30, through Thursday, September 5, at the Top of Ohio Fairgrounds, just north of Wauseon on State Route 108 at Ohio Turnpike Exit 34. For more information, visit www.fultoncountyfair.com or visit the Fair on Facebook.

SERVICE ... (L to R) After 40 years of serving on the Fulton County Fair Board -- 39 of those as President -- Carl Buehrer (right) passes the torch of leadership to Dennis Wyse, a lifelong resident of Wauseon. Wyse and his family have been participating in the Fair, in a variety of ways, since he was 5 years old. Most recently, in 2012, he served as Vice President of the Fair Board. WAUSEON (Ohio) -- Filling the shoes of Carl Buehrer -- the Fulton County Fair Board president who retired last November after 40 years in office -- is a daunting task. And no one knows that better than Dennis Wyse, the man whos been elected to fill them. Carl and those other guys who retired recently: they put the Fulton County Fair on top, stated Dennis, a 60-year-old farmer from Wauseon. I cant say enough about what theyve done; I admire them. Their dedication is going to be missed -- greatly -- because they lived the Fair. In his own way, so has Dennis. A FAMILY TRADITION I always wanted to be a part of the Fair, even when I was a little kid, he explained. I remember when I was 4 or 5, coming to the Fair with my family and grandma on Labor Day and having a picnic on the southeast corner of the race track under the trees. It was a family tradition to come to the Fair. The Fulton County Fair gets in your blood and sticks with you. As a youngster, Dennis was in 4-H for nine years and showed swine and

steers at the Fair. In his senior year of high school, he was asked to take over as advisor of the Clinton Doodlebugs 4-H Club after the adult advisors resigned, and continued as the clubs advisor into his 20s. Later, his own kids joined 4-H and took part in the Fair, and Dennis became a 4-H advisor once again, rounding out his total years as an advisor at 11 years. In addition, the business he co-owned for many years -Fraker and Wyse Construction Company -- built or renovated several buildings on the Fairgrounds, including the Fairs Poultry Barn. RECRUITED TO SERVE Denniss interest in the Fair did not go unnoticed. In August 1992, Vernon Mull asked me to run for Fair Board, Dennis recalled. But my kids were in their second year of 4-H and I didnt want to lose that time with them. I told Vernon I couldnt run then, but I would down the road. In the meantime, I always helped out with the Fair. In 2010, Dennis, who is from York Township, finally ran for Fair Board and was elected as a member-atlarge. Although hed been

event that I am able to find sponsorship, I am very excited to participate in the WAF (World Arm Wrestling Federation)s tournament and represent Team USA. While it is true that arm wrestlers face their opponents alone, Deena says nobody works their way to the professional table solo. This area has a very strong community of arm wrestlers, Deena said. Daniel and Jenny Perez of NOW (Northwest Ohio Pullers) are and have been instrumental in my training along with Justin Shaffner, Richie Martinez, Quinlin Mendez, Trevor Sly, Zach Marihugh, and Jason Barlow. Deena continued by saying, My family and personal friends have encouraged me every step of the way on this journey of arm wrestling. I absolutely could nev-

Someone from our small area making a name for themselves on the world stage.
