INTRODUCTION The Bollard Pull Calculation Sheet is a Microsoft EXCEL based calculation tool for the evaluation of the required towing force. The worksheet calculates the resistance forces on the towed object based on environmental criteria. The resultant forces are then used to validate the towing vessel selection as well as provide the minimum length of towline and minimum breaking loads, All calculations are undertaken in accordance with codes of practice from London Offshore Consultants, Noble Denton, DNV and IMO.

USER GUIDANCE 1. Upon opening the calculation sheet, the initial User Input sheet will be displayed. This sheet requires the input of operation specific details in order to proceed with the calculation. As per the sheet instructions, the environmental criteria should be selected via the check boxes, however, only one may be selected. The calculation method desired should also be selected and in this instance multiple selections may be made. Subsequently, the destination cells for required data input will be highlighted in orange. These cells must be completed for the desired calculation method to be accurate.

2. The sheet instructions state that the blue cells are optional inputs. These values may be estimated using basic formulae; however the vessel specific values may be input and used instead to give a more accurate result. 3. The cargo specification requires the input of the above deck cargo dimensions. The frontal area and centre of area are necessary for the calculation process. The initial unit will always be considered as the towed units hull above the waterline. To add subsequent units of cargo, substructures, fixtures etc. the new unit button may be selected. 4. The following sheet, titled DNV, provides the results of the DNV code calculations for the required towline force, If the method is being used outside of the desired parameters a warning will be displayed at the top of the worksheet. The highlighted cell on the sheet refers to the tow location in order to estimate the tug efficiency. However, if the tug efficiency is known, it may be entered manually. The proposed tugs validity will also be confirmed in this table prior to the calculation of MBL and towline length 5. The sheet titled GLND provides the calculations carried out in accordance with GL Noble Dentons Guidelines for the Approval of Towing Vessels and Guidelines for Marine Transportations. The sheet displays two methods for calculating the towline pull required. The method used should be based on the validity. Warnings for either method will be displayed adjacent to the method headings and will be based on the user input sheet. If both methods are valid, the maximum calculated value of TPR will be carried forward. The proposed towing vessels validity will be displayed. The user is required to select the restrictions on the tow from the highlighted cell and this will provide the appropriate MBL, ULC and towline length. 6. The sheet headed LOC does not contain any calculations for the TPR but provides the values for the MBL and towline length based on the LOC Guidelines for Barge Transportation. The user is required to select the TPR calculation method and then the restrictions on the tow. 7. 4.1 Paragraph Text Heading 2
