Welcome

August 11 2013

Welcome to Unley Park Baptist today. It is great to have you with us. If you are new to Unley Park, we appreciate that it can be daunting to walk into a new church, so as much as we can, we want to help you feel at home here. In the pew in front of you please find a black folder that contains a white care card for you to complete. There is also a "Welcome Pack" available for you that, among other things, has a special Care Card for you to record your visit and for us to follow up any requests you make. All Care Cards should be "posted" as you leave the church, in the locked box on the table by the "Baptistry Door".

Just a Minute
Whats happened to the old Chemist shop? When I was young the Chemist was a place where you went to get prescriptions filled and films developed. It had a certain smell of perfume about it and it was always spotlessly clean. The thing I remember most was they sold large glucose jelly beans and I used to save up my pocket money until I had enough to go into Newberrys Chemist and buy a large bag of them. Other than that, the average person had little knowledge of what was on the shelves. That was for the Pharmacist to know. There was a certain aura about the place that made it special. The other day I went into the Chemist Warehouse! Gone is the old Chemist shop! Now its DIY! There were people walking around with baskets. There were signs everywhere telling us what was on special. I felt like I was in a supermarket. There was a catalogue with all the bargains promising me that they would not be beaten on price. I discovered I could buy shoes or dishwashing tablets and a whole lot of other stuff you wouldnt normally expect to buy in a chemist! And of course there were still the large glucose jelly beans! However, instead of the quiet, pristine environment of the old chemist shop, it was noisy, busy and untidy. The aura had gone and it was just another busy retail outlet trying to sell more than their competitor. It was an outlet for people who Google their symptoms and then go to the chemist warehouse to choose their solutions! As you know, Im not one who hankers for the good old days. Im with Solomon who said, Dont say, why were the old days better than these, because it is not wise to ask such questions [Ecclesiastes 7:10]. However, it did remind me that we live in a DIY world. We want choice. We want to decide for ourselves whats good for us. We want to shop around for what we think is best for us. Wellbeing is in high demand in the market place and there are plenty of options to choose from! Some people could be excused for thinking religion is like shopping in the Chemist Warehouse. The average person sees religion as being aisle after aisle of choices about what we have to do, or think or give up or prove in order to find life. Jesus takes away all the confusion. He says I have come that you might have life, and have it to the full. I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep [John 10:10-11]. Jesus does not promise to take away every ache and pain. Cont

He does not offer to dull our senses to the reality of our world. He does not send us along aisle after aisle of rules to be obeyed to make us feel better about ourselves. He simply says Follow me God bless Neil

We have been asked to submit one more document which we have done. Please pray that the visa would be processed and approved as soon as possible. We look forward to having a big celebration as a family the day we receive the visa in our hands. Give thanks also that our landlord has approved us continuing on a month-by-month rate until we leave, which is a huge relief for our stress levels.
