26 Years of Service August 2013

Educate to LeadAdopt A School

In this still recovering economy, parents continue to struggle with everyday needs which include school supplies. The Executive Board approved the Adopt A School project which this year included Kipapa and Kahuku Elementary Schools. With a population of 650 students, Kipapa has 57% who fall into the needy category. With that in mind, Principal Corinne Yogi, had asked the teachers to not include disinfectant wipes and paper towels on their list. These were furnished along with another priority itemflutophones. SICO was invited to help distribute the supplies along with other community service clubs. At Kahuku Elementary, two of the more priority needs included white board erasers and markers and sheet protectors. Principal Mrs. Masaniai was caught a bit off guard by our call to help her students so these were off the top of her head. Each school also received crayons, pencils, colored pencils, folder paper, scissors, portfolios, and a host of other supplies. Donation date at Kahuku will be on Friday, August 2nd at 10:00 am. Mrs. Masaniai was just grateful to be remembered.

Presidents Message
Aloha SICO Members, Wow! What a feeling! Beings believing! Take your passion and make it happen! Those words from the Flashdance song perfectly describe whats happening with our club! We opened the year inducting 2 new members, kicked off our Adopt-a-School project donating school supplies to Kipapa and Kahuku Elementary Schools. Believe me, we were shocked to learn from school principals that 57% of the students are poverty level. So you know that SICOs efforts are much appreciated. With your generous support, we are on the way to a successful annual joint fundraising at Night in Rome on Aug. 24th at Dole Cannery. Our Calendar of events look like a productive year and we are always welcome to new ideas, so please feel free to share your suggestions! Like, lets go golfing, bowling, miniature golf, billiards, movies, and especially trying out new restaurants! Anybody wanna go see The Heat with Sandra Bullock at Mililani Theater? See you all on the 24th ! Keep up the good work for the Best for Women! Imua! Mahalo,

Another New Member

Meryle Hirotsu, sponsored by Jane Murakami, was inducted at the July 11th meeting. Along with Zoe Tanaka, they officially became members. Jane and Meryle are friends attending the same church. Meryle attended our June meeting. When the notice for the Ehime Maru Clean Up went out, Meryle was included and responded. Jackie sent her the current newsletter and a follow up email confirmed that Meryle would join SICO. FIRE CRACKER CLAP EVERYONE!

Hawaii Army National Guard Happy Birthday

Lyn Lurbe August 14th Answering an appeal for lip balms and moisturizing lotions due to the bitter cold in Afghanistan, SICO sent over $100 worth of these items earlier this year. The unit is now safely on their way back to Hawaii. After receiving the items, LTC Mel Murakami sent an email to Jackie Pactol to thank SICO for their thoughtfulness and support of the Hawaii Army National Guard.

Happy Anniversary

Susans Great Adventure

At first, a bit reluctant to talk much about her trip to Peru, Susan Lau shared an amazing adventure. Of course, visiting Machu Picchu was the highlight of the trip. The tour group traveled from Cuzco to an area from which they had to hike to Machu Picchu. It was breathtaking, literally and visually. They also visited the Nazca Lines by airplane with its amazingly huge outlines of several animals. Susan was very nearly becoming air sick by the swooping plane as it raced across the desert to view all the lines drawn by ancient people. At Lake Titicaca, the largest freshwater lake in the world, high up in the Andes, they learned of a people who live on reed islands in the lake. The reeds are piled up to form little islands on which the people live. Every three months, the islands have to be rebuilt with more reeds that are cut by hand. As the group sat on logs on the lake shore, Susan was captured by the contrast of the primitive lifestyle and the tourists with their high tech iPads, iPhones and cameras. She is grateful to live in Hawaii and America.
