Wireless Communications Systems Designs ( ) Midterm test 11/1/2010

This test is designed to have a total of 100 points, please answer each question in detail. You should have up to 3 hours to finish this test. If conditions provided in the questions are not sufficient to solve the problem, you can make your own assumptions to solve that (minor reduction might still apply depending on whether your assumptions are reasonable or not)

------------------------------------------------------------------------Question 1 1. (10 points) Please generate two orthogonal codes which have the code length of 32 (chips). 2. (10 points) What happen if two codes have different lengths (for example code length of 8 and 16)? A. (5 points) can they be orthogonal? Prove your answer. B. (5 points) how that impact the transmission rate if the transmission bandwidth is the same? Note: To get points, you need to show the detail of the procedure and prove the orthogonality of two codes

Question 2 1. (5 points) Please use the attached paper to fill out the reuse factor of 3, N = 3, cell deployment. 2. (5 points) Considering OMNI cell (antenna is 360 degree), please calculate the achievable downlink S/I (signal to interference ratio) for N=3 based on only the first tier and second tire co-channel cells We assume the propagation order = 3. 3. (10 points) If the calculated SIR is not sufficient, please suggest a method to improve at least 4dB and prove (show) your calculation. Note: Answer can be vary. Question 3 (20 points) Please provide a call flow to setup a 3-way call (set up three conversations), please use GSM call flow messages to explain.

Question 4 1. (5 points) Please explain the benefit of using interleaving in wireless communication 2. (15 points) Design a transmission mechanism to guarantee that the packet error rate for every user is zero (based on following assumptions) answer can vary. Points will be given based on the design quality. Considering a TDMA system, for every 200 bit transmission, there are always 10 consecutive bits in error during the transmission (happen within each 200-bit transmission but when to happen is not fixed) Each user packet has 20 bits and the packet is failed only if the packet has three and more bits in error. Assumed that each channel has 10 time slots per frame (can support 10 users) Each time slot can transmission 20 bits

Question 5 1. (5 points) Suppose that each channel (one trunk) can support upto 30 subscribers during the busy hour, please calculate the Erlang traffic contributed by each subscriber 2. (5 points) What will be the associated average voice call hold time from each subscriber during the busy hour? 3. Form answer (1) and (2), with the Erlang contribution from each subscriber, please calculate the maximum total subscribers that the operation can support if the operator has 3000 base stations and has the spectrum of 600 channels (equivalent) A. (5 points) if reuse factor is 4 B. (5 points) Please re-calculate the total subscribers if the average busy hour voice call holding time for each subscriber is 60 seconds
