Ku-Band BUC system solutions

Introduction
BUC-based satellite earth stations sometimes require more planning and consideration than 70/140 MHz IF transceiver-based systems. The operation of a BUC is more integrated with the other items of equipment in an earth station when compared with a 70/140 MHz transceiver. In order to function properly, a BUC must be provided with a 10 MHz reference signal, power and, optionally, an FSK M&C signal. In most cases, these three signals are fed to the BUC via the one transmit IF cable. The provision of these signals is guided by de facto industry standards and practices, which have evolved over the last few years. There are still times, however, when a systems integrator may discover that elements of a system are not fully compatible because they are not able to provide one or more of these critical signals.

Codan solutions
To solve these system integration problems, Codan has developed a range of equipment that assist in offering solutions. Spectrum inverting and non-inverting BUCs Codan has introduced frequency non-inverting models to its range of 6900 BUCs, complementing the 7900 series. VSAT systems integrators can select from either spectrum inverting or non-inverting, standard or extended Ku-Band BUCs from 4 W to 40 W. The table below defines the relationship between the modems IF input frequency, the BUCs LO and RF output frequencies. Non-inverting BUCs are indicated by a -NI at the end of the ordering part number (see page 18, BUC products, accessories and options). All other BUCs are inverting.

For inverting BUCs, find the required setting for the IF frequency on your modem using the following equation: fIF = fLO fRF For example, if an RF output frequency of 14250 MHz is required from an inverting BUC that has an LO frequency of 15450 MHz, you must set the IF frequency on your modem to 1200 MHz. For non-inverting BUCs, find the required setting for the IF frequency on your modem using the following equation: fIF = fRF fLO For example, if an RF output frequency of 14050 MHz is required from a non-inverting BUC that has an LO frequency of 12800 MHz, you must set the IF frequency on your modem to 1250 MHz. 6550 IF Interface Unit Features include: 19" rack mounted, 1 RU high 10 MHz reference for BUC and LNB 48 V DC power for BUC via transmit IF coaxial cable capacity to power up to 4 W LBUC 18 V DC power for LNB via receive IF coaxial cable modem FSK M&C communications to/from BUC PC RS232 M&C communications to/from BUC via FSK

System scenarios
Modem unable to supply 10 MHz reference and DC power for BUC and LNB
This scenario arises for a number reasons: Modem cannot supply 10 MHz reference L-Band IF combiners cannot pass the DC power and/or 10 MHz reference from the modem Modem cannot supply the 48 V DC required by some BUCs Optical fibre Interfacility Links (IFLs) replace coaxial cable IFLs

Modem cannot supply 10 MHz reference First, it is not uncommon for SCPC modems to have both a standard and a high-stability frequency reference option. The frequency stability and phase noise performance of the standard reference usually makes it unsuitable for use as a BUC frequency reference. Secondly, some proprietary indoor units (IDUs) are designed to drive BUCs with internal DRO-based local oscillators. In some circumstances (e.g. at the satellite beam edge with a high data rate), an alternative non-DRO based BUC may be required. L-Band IF combiners cannot pass the DC power and/or 10 MHz reference from the modem Multi-carrier applications require the use of L-Band IF combiners. Most off-the-shelf combiners are unable to pass the DC power and 10 MHz reference signals from the modem. A separate unit is required to supply these signals to the BUC and LNB. Modem cannot supply the 48 V DC required by some BUCs This is a common problem with modems or IDUs designed to drive low-power BUCs (typically 1 W to 2 W). These IDUs are typically only designed to provide voltages of 24 V or less. This issue may also arise if the modem does not have a 48 V DC BUC power supply option, or has a 48 V DC BUC power supply option of insufficient rating.

Ku-Band BUC system solutions

Optical fibre IFLs replace coaxial cable IFLs Optical fibre IFLs may be used when: the IFL length is too large to cope with the L-Band IF signal loss of a coaxial cable there are concerns about voltage potential differences and/or electrical safety electromagnetic interference at L-Band frequencies may be a problem they cannot provide DC power for the BUC they may not provide DC power for the LNB most cannot carry the 10 MHz reference signal from the modem to the BUC and LNB

However, optical fibre IFLs have several limitations:

Solution The 6550 IF Interface Unit can be used to provide 48 V DC power to both the LNB and BUC (up to 4 W) and the 10 MHz reference signals. The 6550 can also be used with higher power, externally powered BUCs, as they ignore the 48 V DC on the transmit IF cable. This means that the 6550 can be used in conjunction with the 6580B, 7580, or DuraComm IDU Power Supply modules if the higher capacity 48 V DC power is required. The 6550 also provides BUC monitor and control access (without the need for an additional M&C cable) via the FSK M&C signal carried on the transmit IF cable. See Figure 2 on page 12 and Figure 3 on page 12 to view the various ways that the 6550 may be used.

Modem unable to supply DC power for BUC

In some cases, while the modem is able to supply the 10 MHz reference and FSK M&C signals, it may not be able to supply the appropriate DC power to the BUC. This can occur if it is: not fitted with a BUC power supply option fitted with a BUC power supply that has the incorrect voltage fitted with a BUC power supply of insufficient capacity

Ku-Band BUC system solutions

Solution Codans 6580B and DuraComm IDU Power Supply modules have been designed specifically for these instances and can be used to provide 48 V DC power for the BUC (up to 25 W) via the IFL. The 6580B and DuraComm IDU Power Supply modules block any DC voltage from the modem and multiplexes 48 V DC onto the L-Band transmit IF cable to power the BUC. Since it is transparent to the 10 MHz reference and FSK M&C signals, normal operation is unaffected by the addition of the 6580B or DuraComm IDU Power Supply modules. The 6580B or DuraComm IDU Power Supply module can also be used to provide 48 V DC via an external connector when fitted to BUCs up to 25 W. The 6582 or 7580 BUC Power Supply module may be used to provide 48 V DC to BUCs with external connectors only. In most cases these PSUs will be used for BUCs requiring high DC power. Figure 5 on page 13 shows a typical configuration for the 6582 or 7580 BUC Power Supply module. Figure 3 on page 12 and Figure 4 on page 13 show two possible system configurations using the 6580B. A configuration for the DuraComm IDU Power Supply module is shown in Figure 6 on page 14.

M&C solutions
Connections to the following interfaces may be permanent or temporary, depending on your requirements.

Standard M&C interfaces

Several protocols are built into the BUC to suit various applications. These protocols enable local, remote, and on-line control and monitoring. Codans BUCs utilise a serial command set that is compatible with ASCII and packet formats. The command set uses 3-letter mnemonic commands, and has built-in help. RS232 interface The RS232 serial interface can be used with any terminal-emulation program over a distance of up to 15 m. It supports both the ASCII and the Codan packet protocols simultaneously. The fixed data rate and protocol simplifies the connection during installation and commissioning, and enables a PC running a terminal-emulation program, a 6560 Handheld Controller, or a 6570 Remote Controller to be used to configure the BUC. The M&C connection is made using an MS-type MIL-C-26482, 12-14S connection. RS422/485 interface The RS422/485 interface can be operated in either 2-wire or 4-wire mode. The RS422/485 interface enables monitor and control of a BUC over long distances (up to 1000 m) using protocols that are not available for use with the RS232 interface. This interface may be used with multiple BUCs with addressing. The M&C connection is made using an MS-type MIL-C-26482, 12-14S connection. FSK interface The FSK interface enables monitor and control of the BUC over long distances using the IFL cable (via the IF INPUT connector on the BUC) and eliminates a separate cable run, however, it does require a modem with FSK monitor and control capability. Several packet protocols are built in. This interface is compatible with modems using the ND SatCom protocol directly via the IFL cable. It may also be used with the Codan 6550 IF Interface Unit.

Additional M&C interfaces in the 7700/7900 series BUCs

All 7700/7900 RBUCs have a LAN connection as standard. This provides an embedded web-page server, Telnet capabilities, and MIBs (management information database) for SNMP. All interfaces that are accessed via the LAN connector require a login and password. LAN interface The LAN interface provides a 10/100 BaseT Ethernet interface with TCP/IP protocol, auto-sensing and auto-speed negotiation. It uses an 8-pin MIL 62/N-165-10-85-622 connection to RJ45 over distances of up to 100 m. Telnet interface The Telnet interface provides access to the serial M&C command set via a LAN or the internet. This interface may be accessed via the Windows command line or a terminal program such as HyperTerminal . HTTP web interface The HTTP web interface provides an embedded web server with HTML pages. This interface provides monitor and control of BUCs via a set of user-friendly web pages. Automatic updates on the Status page occur every 30 seconds. SNMP interface The SNMP interface enables central monitoring of remote sites via network management system (NMS) solutions such as DataMiner NMS by Skyline Communications, and Network Manager by Castle Rock Computing. MIB files that are compatible with the open standard SNMP protocol are available from the Codan web site. 6570 Remote Controller The 6570 provides remote control and monitoring facilities of the BUCs at a convenient indoor location. The remote controller is connected via its BUC Interface connector to the M/C connector on the BUC or the M&C 1 SERIAL connector on the 7586L Controller using the cable supplied.

Ku-Band BUC system solutions

BUC redundancy system solutions

Redundancy switching systems for BUCs and LNBs pose system challenges not encountered in standard 70/140 MHz IF transceiver systems. Since the transmit and receive IF cables to BUCs and LNBs carry DC power, 10 MHz reference signals and the L-Band IF signals, the redundancy switching system must also manage the splitting and switching of these signals. In addition, modems are not normally able to power two BUCs simultaneously, so BUC power must be provided independently of the modem. NOTE NOTE The 7586L Controller is designed to operate with externally powered BUCs. Single-stream BUC systems are easily upgradable to a redundancy system. If your existing BUC systems use IF-powered BUCs or 6582 BUC Power Supply modules, please contact your Codan representative.

The 7586L Controller has been designed to provide the following options: BUC 1:1 redundancy switching (Tx Only) BUC and LNB 1:1 redundancy switching (Tx + Rx) internal 10 MHz reference signal for the above options 10 MHz reference redundancy with an external reference source

For critical applications in which protection of the receive path is also a requirement, the 7586L Tx and Rx option can be used to provide BUC and LNB switching (Tx and Rx). In this configuration, the 7586L operates in stream redundancy mode where a fault detected in either the BUC or LNB in one stream causes switchover to the other BUC and LNB pair.
