Simbahayan Community Development Office Orientation Last July 4, 2013, the College of Rehabilitation Sciences was given an orientation to the new policies and guidelines of the Simbahayan Community Development Office. During the orientation, Assoc. Prof. Marielyn Quintana, Director of Simbahayan, stressed the importance of following the guidelines set by their office for a seamless application of community development project proposals by recognized student organizations. The orientation was attended by officers of the colleges student organizations, their respective faculty advisers, faculty members, administrative officials and alumni representative. Community Visits Last August 1, 2013, in order to better strengthen the ties between UST-CRS and its partner communities, the CD Team of the college scheduled visits to some of them. In preparation for the colleges Community Day, there is importance for a collaborative and cooperative relationship between the college and our partner communities to ensure the success of these activities. Composed of Mr. Ivan Neil Gomez, Ms. Roxanne Fernandez, Ms. Marilyn Chan and Ms. Catherine Escuadra, the CD Team paid a visit to the Ursuline Sisters CBR Program in Fairview, Quezon City; Cottolengo Filipino in Rodriguez, Rizal; and Tanglaw Buhay in Quiapo, Manila. Community Development Research Special Interest Group As part of the research agenda of the College, implemented by its research arm, the Center for Health Research and Movement Science, the Community Development Research Special Interest Group (ComDev SIG) aims to operate with community development and research at the core of its function, aligned with the Universitys thrust towards knowledge generation directed at empowering its partner communities. We seek to enhance, engage and empower the partner communities of the University and the College through the conscientious use of the best available evidence; conduct collaborative and community-focused program planning, development, monitoring and evaluation; creation of opportunities for the advocacy of persons with disabilities; promotion of health and wellness through innovative and context-sensitive programs that maximizes the level of function and quality of life of individuals, families and the community as a whole; active participation in the co-creation of knowledge; active involvement in the formulation of rehabilitation policies that inform and influence health towards catalyzing positive social change. Community development is the process of developing active, healthy and sustainable communities based on social justice, inclusion and mutual respect. It seeks to affect positive health and social change through community engagement, rehabilitation, participation and empowerment. As a research group, we aim to promote health and enable participation of individuals, groups and populations within the context of their communities. In order to realize this, the group engages in a variety of initiatives, including: Community-Involved Research. Research activities that involve addressing the underlying problems through capacity building, skills development and/or knowledge transfer. This is the first step towards the creation of community health and rehabilitation programs. The idea is for all community-involved researches to evolve into community-based or community-development types of researches. (Example: Recruitment of participants for clinical research which is not necessarily based on established needs in the community, nor aimed at community-level program development.)

community health participatory action equality.) and wellness, research and UST-CRS Bayanihan: Bayani sa Bayan ni Juan: Tungo sa Malusog, Pantay at Maunlad na Pamayanan Is Bayanihan still alive, or just a thing of the past? Are Bayanis still among our midst, or an archival artifact found in books? As ballsy as it may sound, the College of Rehabilitation Sciences resoundingly says NO! Bayanihan is a Filipino tradition where members of a community (Bayan) perform united communal work (Bayani) towards the accomplishment of task. The conventional representation is that of a group of townsfolk lifting, carrying and transferring a nipa hut (Filipino house) from one place to another. Each member of the community plays a particular role, whether in the actual transfer of the house, in the preparation prior to the transfer, or the fiesta to conclude the challenge. Considered as a community event, this occasion celebrates the Filipino spirit of cooperation, volunteerism and service. The word bayanihan has come to mean a communal spirit that makes seemingly impossible feats possible through the power of unity and cooperation. Borrowing concepts from Bayanihan, the community development activities of the College of Rehabilitation Sciences aimed directly at its partner communities and institutions empowers its members in the planning, development, implementation and evaluation of community-based health and rehabilitation programs through effective community organization and involvement. This project solidifies the recently acknowledged partnership between UST-CRS and the Municipality of Abucay, Bataan. To mark its kick-off, the College prepares introductory and precipitating activities that will spark and maintain the interest of the community, as well as provide them with a glimpse of future projects to come. Furthermore, this is a good opportunity to test the waters on both side, and provide valuable insight to the possible strengths, opportunities, weaknesses and threats that will be taken into consideration in creating health and rehabilitation programs in the community in the future.

Integral to all these are the partner communities that dynamically collaborates with the group in defining, planning and implementing community development initiatives. By subjecting ourselves to continuous professional development, stakeholder and member checking, and self-reflective practices, the ComDev SIG seek to actively and equitably engage the partner communities in the social, medical, cultural, economic and political life of the communities. UST-CRS to Celebrate Community Days on August27-28, 2013. As part of our College week this school year, the College of Rehabilitation Sciences reflects back on its 39 years of service to the Filipino community by providing various community development activities with our partner communities.

Paglilingkod. Yan ang natatanging kasagutan. Dahil gusto kong mag-lingkod. Gusto

On August 27, 2013, student organizations lead the CRS Community Day alongside their faculty advisers. While the following day, August 28, 2013, Administrative Officials, Support Staff, Faculty Members and students of the college will go to the Municipality of Abucay in Bataan for libREHAB, a community development activity providing the community with sustainable health and rehabilitation programs.

Mas
