SUMMARY OF MOBILE LEARNING TECHNOLOGY

Decide, design, develop and deploy is the standard four-step process relating to technology. Mobile learning (m-learning) began as long ago as 1968 with the appearance of Alan Kays Dynabook. The Apricot portable (1984) delivered m-learning, having a microphone for voice input as well as optical connectors between the keyboard and screen to allow it to be disassembled and carried around. That same principle is at work again, as learning materials developers realize that traditional e -learning materials need to be modified to be effective when delivered via mobile device. Moreover, because of how m-learning is being used, content for m-learning programs needs to focus on essential information. This changes the learning program into more of an electronic performance support system or even a learning app. If e-learning works well in a formal learning context, then m-learning works equally well in an informal learning one. So there are some basic differences in these delivery mechanisms which learning materials designers/developers need to take into account Then there was the Philips Velo (1990), which ran pocket Office software including Word and Excel, followed by the Apple Message Pad, Newton (1994). Personal digital assistants (PDAs) the bright stars of 2002 produced smaller, full color screens and devices that operated at faster speeds. As late as 2004, mobile devices werent wireless enabled and had small batteries which meant that they stopped working almost as soon as they were turned on! Tablet PCs were coming on the market but they were still cumbersome. Mobile phones had small screens and the ability to input data in response to learning materials was limited to a rudimentary keypad. However, few people had PDAs and different ones used different operating systems. So, it was expensive to adapt learning programmes to be delivered on all PDAs. However, about this time, Smartphones emerged which linked mobile phones with PDAs, so you only needed to carry one, pocket-sized device. These days, its not about getting content to people but, rather, using mobile devices to answer specific learning, development and/or performance needs. However, few people had PDAs and different ones used different operating systems. So, it was expensive to adapt learning programmes to be delivered on all PDAs. However, about this time, Smartphones emerged which linked mobile

phones with PDAs, so you only needed to carry one, pocket-sized device.Lastly, The mobile learning technology materials content and its treatment are influenced by what people want and need.
