2nd unofficial Test: Sth Africa A v India A at Pretoria

A ug 24-27, 2013 (09:30 local | 07:30 GMT | 13:00 IST)

India A 433 for 3 (Dhawan 248, Pujara 109*) beat South Africa A 394 (Van Jaarsveld 108, Hendricks 106, Pandey 4-76) by 39 runs Scorecard and ball-by-ball details Shikhar Dhawan began with Mo Farah-esque strides and ended with an Usain Bolt-like burst to plunder 248 off 150 balls - the second-highest List A score ever and the record for an A-team - out of India A's giddying 433 for 3, in the virtual semi-final against South Africa A in Pretoria. South Africa, in reply, made the most of a flat pitch and short boundaries to come close to the target and only ran out of steam towards the end to lose by 39 runs. India had chosen to bat and the innings started with Dhawan driving one straight down the ground. A flurry of boundaries helped Dhawan and his new partner at the top, M Vijay, scoot to 91 in the 12th over, but as Pujara joined Dhawan after Vijay was caught behind for 40, there was a quiet period as the run rate dropped to below seven. It was merely the quiet before the violence.

Players/Officials: Shikhar Dhawan | Cheteshwar Pujara Matches: South Africa A v India A at Pretoria

Dhawan arrived at the century-mark off 86 balls with Series/Tournaments: India A tour of South Africa a straight-driven boundary in the 27th over, and found Teams: India | South Africa his nitro booster to rocket from there on. In the 28th over, he smashed his first six, off Juan Theron, and immediately followed it with another. The projected team total was constantly being readjusted to higher levels as Dhawan kept finding the boundaries in an unprecedented attack. His second hundred came at almost double the rate as his first, taking 46 balls, as he smashed his way to becoming only the third Indian to record a double-century in limited-overs cricket after Virender Sehwag and Sachin Tendulkar. At the other end, Cheteshwar Pujara had quietly brought up his own fifty off 54 balls. Dhawan would not have got his double century had Rusty Theron held on to a chance off the bowling of Roelof van der Merwe when Dhawan was on 154, but with 10 overs still left when he got past that landmark, the 11-year-old record of the highest List A score of 268 looked well within his reach. He fell 20 runs short of it to finish second best. Pujara's unbeaten 109 off 97 seemed mild in comparison. The two batsmen scored 285 runs together in 33.2 overs, 220 of which came from Dhawan's bat. South Africa's bowling unit also entered record books as this was the first instance of five bowlers giving away more than 60 runs each in a List A match, but they were not the only ones to suffer. India's bowlers were meted out the same treatment as South Africa openers Reeze Hendricks and Rilee Rossouw rampaged their way to 121 by the 13th over and a repeat of South Africa's senior side's memorable night seven years ago didn't appear improbable.

A couple of quick wickets fell to the spinners, but Hendricks hammered a 75-ball hundred to take South Africa past 200 in the 25th over. The ball frequently disappeared to the adjacent net-ball courts as South Africa remained abreast with the required rate. The chase was following After the dismissal of Hendricks, the required rate went over 10-an-over for the first time in the 32nd over, but Vaughn van Jaarsveld, with helpful cameos from Justin Ontong and Roelof van der Merwe, kept up the hope. Van Jaarsveld fell soon after reaching to his century, top-edging an Ishwar Pandey slower delivery to mid-off, effectively ending South Africa's challenge, as India mopped up the remaining batsmen quickly. However, on a batsman's day, Dhawan's knock proved to be the difference.

As much as I hate to admit it, Virender Sehwag's ODI career seems over. He may bounce back after a strong domestic season but he may not last. Too much competition for the opening slot. We all know he can hit big scores. If he manages to tweak his batting style to achieve more consistent results he could sneak into the Test side once Sachin Tendulkar hangs up his boots.

There is no denying the fact that dhawan is getting better and better as the day progresses but we must not get carried away. He deserves all the accolades for his performances ever since he made his test debut against the Aussies. But to become great player one has top [rove in all conditions and against quality attacks. It will be interesting how he copes against steyn morkel and company in the forthcoming test series later this year. He is a flamboyant player who likes to go after the bowlers and that approach can be dicey on bouncy pitches of SouthAfica. There will be moments when a class player struggles on bowlers freindly tracks but if that player wants to called as a man for all season then he has to withstand all the pressure to perform well for his country.

Posted by vinaykmr on (August 12, 2013, 16:55 GMT) well done. glad to see both dhawan n pujara score centuries ahead of the crucial sa tour coming up late in the year. the real series for the team. keep up the performances. but i think the track must hv been the flatest even worse than indian flat beds. Posted by LongLiveTestCricket on (August 12, 2013, 16:53 GMT) Great knock no matter what the pitch was and even if it was A level game. Really impressed to see his hunger for runs in all parts of the world. He has a unique method of his own and a very effective one. This is very important exposure for all the A team players before the full tour starts. The 2 4-days games for the A team would be very important too. We definitely missed him for all these days I say... What a knock!!! He had waited so long to get a permanent place in Indian team. Hopefully, he will be permanent for sometime.. Congratulations Dhawan!!! Posted by 37c. on (August 12, 2013, 16:41 GMT) What a brilliant, brilliant knock - excellent, in fact, he's stormed onto the international scene. But what is Dhawan doing in the 2nd team and not the 1st? There is an odd selection panel out there Posted by Satish Ramkumar on (August 12, 2013, 16:28 GMT)

It was good to see one of my fav cricket star scoring a double ton at a brisk rate. But really didn't understand the reason for not including rayudu in the playing xi. Rayudu is a far better player than some other members in the squad and is in good batting form this tournament. and one more positive from this game is IC Pandey, a promising bowler in the domestic circuit. He took 4 wickets on a flat pitch, where there is nothing for bowlers. All the best to team india A for the final against aus A. Posted by the_blue_android on (August 12, 2013, 16:27 GMT) @Gocho - I'd hate to call Dhawan a Jayasuriya. Dhawan has way better technique. Posted by vr.mandalapu on (August 12, 2013, 16:09 GMT) I agree with Srini in that the boys did not really get the kind of testing pitches which we all hoped they would. Even in Zimbabwe the team mostly saved themselves by winning the toss and avoided batting first in bowler friendly conditions.Let us hope that atleast for the unofficial test matches after this they will gain the experience for which they were sent there. Posted by Nampally on (August 12, 2013, 15:52 GMT) Magnificient double century by Dhawan, only the 3rd double ton for India in ODI, laid the foundation for an enormous unbeatable total of 433. Pujara got his maiden century in ODI's & silenced his critics - he is just as good in ODI's as in Testswhere he is #1 with an average of 65. These 2 were involved in a record 280 partnership- highest in the ODI's for India. Dhawan's double ton was a superb display of power only matched by Sehwag's double ton. Great knock!. SA batting did not fold that easily either. They gave Indian bowlers a lot of head aches with 2 centurians in Hendricks & Jaarsveld. But chasing 433 even against a weak Indian bowling is Herculean task for any batting. Pandey after a poor opening spell came back strongly to claim 4 wkts. He was the leading wkt. taker in the Ranji & I was glad to see pujara still keeping faith in his capabilities & persisting with him. It appears this wkt. is a batting paradise & a Nightmare for the bowlers- as confirmed by 300+ scores. Login - Register to post comments Login
