A GREAT DAY!
A round barn, rising temperatures, lost glasses, cold lake water, and the smell of honeysuckle: what does all of this add up to? The answer is a great ride on the ninth day of June. Fifteen bikers gathered at Sheetz early on Sunday morning as Tony Marko, the ride leader, went over the route and riding procedures. Bill Culp, recently returned from his romantic Hawaiian sojourn, volunteered to be The Sweep. Ruthy Keenan said she had been at a poker party the night before and had a little trouble waking up. Did you win anything, Ruthy? To accommodate Stephanie Lower, Tony said there would be a rest stop in fifty miles. Cant the rest of us use the facilities? questioned a grinning John Stehman. Early morning cloud cover kept the temperature down and Dianna Dommel was cold. As the day progressed the clouds disappeared, the sun appeared, and the temperature did rise. By the time we were caught in a traffic jam, it was hot! There are only three barrel barns remaining in Pennsylvania and the Round Barn, located in Adams County, was our next stop. This spectacular structure was built in 1914, and has a circumference of 282 feet. A silo in the center of the barn is now a play area for children. An array of jellies, jams, crafts, fruit and candies were available for sale. One particular cookbook had been designated for motorcyclists. It was filled with recipes for road kill. Oh, yuck!

Outside Stephanie and Ruthy went to find a geo cache. Ruthy found it, while Stephs forehead found the corner of a building when she was startled by a jumping frog. Geo-caching can be a dangerous hobby. Dan Holmes purchased cookies for Lisa, knowing full well that she would not eat them. He stated, It is the thought that counts. Judy and Jere Fishel avoided the sweets and opted for a bag of pretzels. Deb Cavanaugh liked all of the crafts on display, but said she really isnt into decorating anymore. Looking at all of this food, reminded everyone how hungry we were so the Greenwood Tavern was our next stop. A very accommodating waitress made our lunch pleasant and the food was tasty.

Ernie Ruhl took a double dose of his medicine. That

leg has to heal! While John was checking his phone for pictures from Florida, Steve Mowrer became quite agitated thinking his glasses were lost. He had recently lost his car keys, and now it was the glasses. Steve called home and asked his wife to walk along the highway and see if they were lying intact along the berm. Bless her, she went and did this.

When up on the second floor of the barn, Tony exclaimed, This would be a great place for Bills wedding reception. It is already decorated. That aint happening! declared Bill. But, she would have never located the glasses because after we finished eating and went back to the bikes,

guess what Steve found? The glasses were in the side pocket of his bike pack. We suggested he return to the Round Barn and purchase a gift to take along home. With full bellies, we resumed our ride through the Michaux State Forest, Caledonia State Park, and Pine Furnace State Park. We parked by the lake, close to the sandy beach. Marilyn Henderson, Dianna, Stephanie, and Ruthy shed their boots and headed to the spring-fed lake. Deb and Chuck Cavanaugh, Judy and Jere, and the rest of the men found a picnic table on which they could relax in the 696 acre state park which is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year.

Heading home, we anticipated one more stop, an ice cream shop. Big Bill said it was good to be riding with everyone and reported where he would be turning off to head for home. Shortly after his departure, the parade encountered a big traffic jam due to an accident. Marilyn suggested we leave the main highway and we did. John was so disappointed because Tony got to make the only U-turn of the day. Sorry, John, we know you like to hold the record for U-turns. After the hot moments in the traffic jam and the detour, ice cream at Sweet Willows was a well-earned treat. Everyone agreed, it was a great day!

RIDERS RECIPES Bow Ties & Veggies Ingredients: 2 T. olive oil, c. sliced Vidalia onion, 1 cup chopped broccoli, 1 c. cauliflower, c. chopped peppers, 2 c. cooked bow tie pasta. c. chopped tomatoes, c. sliced strawberries. c feta cheese. Saute the onions until they are soft and cook the broccoli and cauliflower slightly, just so it is not hard. Mix all of the ingredients together. Olive oil and Italian herbs are sufficient for dressing or you can add some Zesty Italian dressing. This was the delicious pasta salad that Marilyn Henderson brought to the Warehouse in July. Since we have some very talented chefs in the Chapter, I would like to try and feature a recipe every month. If you have one you would like to share, please email me: ladydeb44@comcast.net Thanks! THE PIG SQUEALED! A half sheet of paper should have been enough to take notes on about the Sandwich Ride on June 11th, but it wasnt. It was a fun-filled evening. John Mummert, the leader, was well prepared; having called Hennigans earlier in the day with a reservation. He went over the route and riding procedures, but the route sure didnt turn out to be as easy as when he explained it. Ruthy Keenan arrived in her car, claiming it had been raining in Ephrata. John suspected that she went through the carwash and forgot to close the windows. Terri and Andrew Peterson, Joyce Pritts, and Dale Gindlesberger all said this was their first Chapter ride of 2013. They had missed some good ones. New members, Paul and Patrice Allen arrived and now we had a parade of bikes ready to follow John on his unique route to Mount Joy. When we finally did arrive at Hennigans, Andy, Dale, Paul, Steve Mowrer, and Tony Marko all exclaimed, Great ride, John, I have never been on some of those roads before. The women would have liked a detailed brochure about some of the magnificent hous es we passed. Next time, John? Cindy, the hostess at Hennigans, bowls with Larry Henderson and consequently, our table received special attention. She is a master at telling jokes and we all fell for the one about the pig that squealed. The special for the night was a Peter Pan Burger and Larry indulged. John was hoping for the Tinker Bell burger, but had to settle for eating Larrys pickle. Spirited conversations at both ends of the table made this a lively night. Marilyn Henderson related the items she has removed from their garage, much to Larrys dismay. John was hypnotized by the flashing pin our cute waitress was wearing. Even though we had delicious meals, Steve, John, Dale Joyce, and Tony all needed a sweet treat. The little ice cream stand in Mount Joy was a perfect place for a nightcap. Thanks, John, for a unique ride and a night filled with laughter! D.E.M

THE GAPS!
Websters dictionary defines a gap as a mountain pass, a cleft or a ravine. On the second Hump Day Ride of 2013, John Stehman led us to six different gaps in southeastern Pennsylvania. If you look at a map and follow the route taken, it sort of resembles a big triangle. We cruised up 283 and the Dauphin Narrows Gap was the first one encountered, followed by Manada Gap. Number three was a more familiar place, Indiantown Gap. A small group of National Guardsmen were on maneuvers. The officer behind the machine gun motioned for us to go ahead and we definitely followed his command. In Pine Grove we stopped for a bite to eat. Jeff Chabys passenger, his granddaughter, Madysen, wanted her jacket, saying she had been cold on these mountain roads. She was really surprised to find out that Pop-Pop could get a Harley with heated seats for her comfort. Keep reminding him, Madysen. The Swatara Gap, Port Clinton, and the Lehigh Furnace Gap took us on some very scenic rural roads. One road in particular was very rural, unpaved. A large sign said, No Maintenance. Travel @ Your Own Risk. While John went over to talk to some nearby workers and inquire about the condition of the unpaved road, Chuck Cavanagh, Bill Culp, Tony Marko and Jeff turned their bikes around. These guys all knew that one U-turn is required on every Hump Day Ride and they did not want to break the tradition. Madysen had requested an ice cream stop. As the group prepared to split up and head for home, she was still enjoying her root beer slushy. PopPop thought the rest should go in the trash can, but she did not agree. Did it wind up cooling off the back of Jeffs neck? We may never know! Thanks John, for filling a gap in our lives with the 2013 Hump Day Rides!
