We kept together for a section of the downhill, but then split to finish our ride. We were set up to head down past the springsagain, then out the purple trail. We bundled up in our warmest gear, mounted our bikes, and Paul loved the air from one rock, and repeated the climbed up the yellow trail. As we twisted up, we would stop aerial attack. This time he made a wonderfulrunning several times to shed one of the many layers we had donned. 12 or 13 point landing.I lost count, and he walked Climbingthe yellow trail tends to raise one's body temperature away unhurt. We headed out, waited for the others, even in these conditions. After the climb, we all startedto find our and packedfor Birmingham. The trails had began to comfort zone. Keep moving and keep warm! This avoided the melt (yes it was that cold) and it was best to get off sensation of rigor mortis setting in when we stopped. We had the trails.lf you missedit, see you next time. * * * finished about half of the interconnected trail and heard riders. "l guess we are not crazy being out here this chilfy morning. Others find riding today to be a good idea also." I thought to myself.Or were they just as crazyas us? lt didn't take long to find out. Trail Feature- Why the Trails Are Created- Brief History of ATB
As a special feature, we present a brief historyof mountain biking. This informationwas obtainedfrom The Mountain Biking Page placo.com/kumarlmvwebrinq. ftttp:l/www. slowtrain. htm) and othersources. In the 1930's bicyclesbegan to be outfittedwith largetires.Today's beachcruisers would be a closeresemblance to thesebikes. These large26-inchdiameter tires allowedfor ridersto ventureoff road with their bikes. Soon, these riders would becomebored with simplefat tire riding. Racing would evolve. It started with riders racing down Mt. Tamalpais, CA (near San Francisco) in the early 70's using the popularEuropeanstyle cycle crossbicycles.Word traveledaround andfour menthoughtof puttingfat tireson old Schwinn Excelsor's with high risebarsanda weightof 30 plus pounds. Thesemen,Joe Breeze,Charlie Kelly, Gary Fisher, and Tom Ritchey organizeda racein 1976ridingthese clunkers offroad. The racebug bit the area, and sooneveryone wantedto racean old clunker.Breezeand Fisher realizedthe old Schwinnwasn't made for racing and soon begandesigningstrongerand lighter frames. Meanwhile,Kelly startedorganizingraces in Marin County CA. These racesdrew public attentionandthe sportbeganto grow ln 1974the rear derailleurappeared in the first balloon tire race. This featurewas well received, and by the next year almostall the bikeshadthem. This new bike weighed45 poundsstripped (a fully loadedbasket, rack, fenders, and kickstandwould totalup to 65 pounds). But the evolution would not simply continue with a reduction of weight and usageof new aerospace materials. Otherideas would haveto "tried". ln 1976a race was held north of Mt. Tamalapais at Pine Mountain. This was the first Repack race that was aptly namedafter the work requiredto the brakesafter the 2.I mile, 1300foot descent. The oil in the coaster would brakes vaporizeon the descentand would require repackingafter eachride. The next year, Breezebuilt ten chrome-molyframesusing the basicExcelsiorgeometry. He racedin one of the repack eventsandwon Gary Fisherfound this intriguing and asked Ritchey to build one for him. These new frames were designed differently from each other and were called MountainBike. This is why we ride a bike today weighing 20-25pounds. Derrick's note: For those nostalgiabuffs, an old Schwinn cruiser(complete with coaster brakeand30+pounds) may be an interesting ride downthe BUMP trail.
