on CheahaRide
byDerrick Seys Anne, Doug, Derrick, and new BUMP member Amy O'Donnell headed off to Cheaha StateParklast Sunday. Again, the ride provedthe driveoverwas well worthit. Only the crackling of the leaves and howlingof the wind couldbe heardas we rode. The trails were quiet and empty. Maybe the uncertainlook in the weather scaredridersoff, or was it the blazeorange vests I saw emergefrom so many pickups as we droveup the mountain. Both made me recall what I read in past newsletters. schedules, Something aboutradar, hunting Annision. arrd thought, Sorta I did not check radar, fust HHHHMMMM! the paper. Weather "looked good" from Birmingham is not allowed and the hunting in Alabama State Parksas a park entrance sign comforted held me. Well, the, weather out for the most part yieldingonly a light drizzlenear the middle of the mountain. Hey, where is Doug? Will the rain stop? The threeof us wondered. Doug Recalling, hadleftus earlier the trails. to go explore The rocks on the trails were technical enoughto keepyou honestas I foundout early ofi, but made Amy proud of her This was only her accomplishments. secondride on her new bike. She checked into a tree coffin for a moment, but Anne helped her free. They finished up navigating of the those great swithcbacks yellow trail, as I searohed for Doug. Apparently we crossedpathson the upper loops, and managed to meetup backat the Country Store. We enjoyed a good ride, good company, and no significant injuries fromthe Cheaha Mountain Express. Ihrs was the January ride. If you did not receive a message from the phone tree, p/easeadvisea boardmember.

In support of the upcomingtrail construction, a quick overviewof sidehilltrail construction terminology anddesign features. Sidehills requirea shelfto be constructed for riding, erosion control, and safety.Theseshelvesare often referredto as benches. The trail trearl (portion of trail ridden or walked) is actually cut into the existiing hillside with a slight out slopeto promotedrainage. A full bench cutsthe entiretreadinto the hill, whereas a partialbench places only a portionof it into the hill with the remainder comingfrom the excavated soil. The amountof sidehill cut away is dependent upon the surrounding grade. Steepergradesrequirethe full bench.Thiese requirethe mostamountof labor, but are alsothe easiest to maintain. Markingthe trail centedine, removing organic matter(humus, leaves, etc.),andre-depositing the mineralsoil makes the bench. If a partial bench is used, the mineralsoil is movedto the outside of thetrail and (refen'ed repacked to asfilislope). A bermcaneasilybe constructed if the repositioned soil is not carefully packed andgivensufficient outslope. Thesernayalsobe created dueto significantriding, andare commonly removed duringmaintenance. The backslope that is cut into the inside of the trailway is referredto asthebackslope. This slopmay be nearlyverticalfor a rocky soil, or approach a l:2 ration for those soils having little cohesion. Local experience can significantlyaid it what ratiosare applicable to your areasoils.
