2013 Bangor Car Show: Wheels on the Waterfront

Join the Greater Bangor Convention & Visitors Bureau for the sixth annual Bangor Car Show: Wheels on the Waterfront, scheduled to take place on Saturday, September 7, 2013 on the Bangor Waterfront. Rain or shine! Last years event drew a record crowd of 3,000 spectators and over 300 registered cars. This year the committee is hoping to have 300 to 400 cars registered, and they are also keeping the event free to encourage families to come down to the Bangor Waterfront and check out all the unusual kinds of cars. If you are interested in showing your car, registration costs $5 for past participants, $10 for first year participants until August 30th and $15 from September 1st to the morning of the show (Saturday, September 7th). Vehicles may check in starting at 8 a.m., and the event will be judged by a panel of experts beginning at 10 a.m. Trophies will be awarded at 2 p.m. Sponsorship opportunities are still available; please give us a call to hear about all the awesome marketing benefits! Water Cannon Salute & New Flight Announced

The Bangor International Airport celebrated the arrival of the first Allegiant Airbus flight with a full water cannon salute, a traditional celebration given for the inaugural flight of an aircraft. Allegiant is introducing these 150-passenger Airbuses to its fleet. Allegiant Air also announced a new route on July 30, 2013. Bangor will now have a direct flight to Punta Gorda Airport, which is halfway between Ft. Myers and Sarasota, Florida. Ft. Myers is only 30 minutes from the airport. We are pleased to add the beaches of Southwest Florida as another affordable, convenient destination option for Bangor residents, said Andrew C. Levy, Allegiant Travel Company President. Bangor Municipal Golf Course Recognized for Environmental Excellence

Bangor Municipal Golf Course has achieved designation as a Certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary through the Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary Program for Golf Courses. Rob Jarvis, PGA Certified Professional, led the effort to obtain sanctuary designation on the property and is being recognized for Environmental Stewardship by Audubon International. Bangor Municipal Golf Course is the 2nd golf course in Maine and the 1,015th in the world to receive the honor. Bangor Municipal Golf Course has shown a strong commitment to its environmental program. They are to be commended for their efforts to provide a sanctuary for wildlife on the golf course property, said Joellen Lampman, Associate Director of Environmental Programs. To reach certification, a course must demonstrate that they are maintaining a high degree of environmental quality in a number of areas, explained Lampman. These categories include: Environmental Planning, Wildlife & Habitat Management, Outreach and Education, Chemical Use Reduction and Safety, Water Conservation, and Water Quality Management. The Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary Program for Golf Courses, endorsed by the United States Golf Association, provides information and guidance to help golf courses preserve and enhance wildlife habitat and protect natural resources. Golf courses from the United States, Africa, Australia, Canada, Central America, Europe, New Zealand, and Southeast Asia have achieved certification in the program. Penobscot Theatre Company's Dramatic Academy proudly presents four productions, featuring more than seventy students: Aristocats Kids, Musical Selections from The Hunchback of Notre Dame, High School Musical On Stage, and RENT: School Edition. Young performers ages 4-22 have been rehearsing while attending classes taught by theatre professionals in acting, voice, movement, dance and musical theatre history. "As rehearsals draw to a close, these incredibly talented kids and teens, are now ready to show off their skills to the public," says Education Director, Jasmine Ireland. Bangor Museum & History Center:

This exhibit tells the story of Maine soldiers fighting on distant battlefields. From frenzied patriotism on the home front to the gory consequences of 1860s battlefield medicine, Bullets and Bandages shares the trials and tests Mainers endured on some of the most gruesome battlefields in history. Exhibit visitors will experience an array of Civil War images and objects including the Hall of Soldiers, prewar bands and patriotic efforts, battlefield technology, and a display of surgeons tools and a medicine chest among other rare images and artifacts. Many firsthand accounts from letters and diaries will be on display as well. Sponsored by Bangor Savings Bank, the exhibit opens on Saturday, May 4 at 10:00 a.m. and runs Tuesdays through Saturdays from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. until October 12, 2013.
