Fund raiser planned for Olympic hopeful

The Jackson Pub will again serve as the location for an event to help fund Lauri Bauschs Olympic dream. The pub, located at N168W20594 Main St. in Jackson, will host a fund raiser from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Aug. 24 for Bausch, an employee at the Jackson Pub who will be leaving in a few weeks to begin training for the skeleton season. Skeleton is a sport in which athletes ride on small sled head-first down a bobsled track. The fund raising event will include music by T.J. Scott, a 50/50 raffle and a prize auction. It is the fourth annual event at the Jackson Pub to raise funds for Bauschs expenses for participating in the skeleton. Bausch first became involved with the sport while an intern at the weight room of the US Olympic Training Center in Lake Placid, NY in 2010. Most people think youre crazy when you do it, she said of the sport. She added that she thought it was crazy as she tried it for the first time. But after her first time down the track, I loved it. Since then she has been has been in a developmental program and has competed at events in the U.S. and abroad. After placing fifth in the Eastern Club Races shortly thereafter, Bausch spent the 2009/10 season sliding for the Lake Placid skeleton development program, and winning Empire State Games, Club Races and Eastern Regionals to qualify for the 2010/11 National Team Trials. Last year her season was limited to competition in the states. During her time in the sport, she has had a ranking as high as fifth among U.S. athletes.

Bausch leaves in a few weeks to begin pre-season training. She said the training will determine where drivers are placed in terms of competition for the upcoming season, be it the World Cup team or other teams. Performances from members of the World Cup team will count more than performances from lower competitions. In addition to the 2014 Winter Olympics which will be held in Sochi, Russia the skeleton season has other events that run through March. Bausch explained that the selection to the Olympic team is based not only on time trials at one meet but on an athletes performance during the season. Prior to heading for pre-season training, Bauschs off-season regimen has involved lower body conditioning to improve her speed at the start, as a better push at the start of the run combined with navigating the sled down the track is what produces the best result. Bausch is a 2003 graduate of Kewaskum High School, where she was the valedictorian. She graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire with a degree in Kinesiology (with a primary focus of Human Performance/Sport Performance) in December 2008. She has participated in rugby as both a player and a coach and she has also participated in softball, basketball, volleyball, track and field, soccer throughout her life. By Thomas J. Hartford qualifies for playoffs

The Hartford Hawks finished the Rock River Northern Division season with two wins to seal the last spot for the playoffs. The Hawks beat the Juneau County Seators 10-0 Aug. 11 and followed that with a 7-3 win over the Hustistford Astros in a play-in game Aug. 13. Slinger lost their final two games of the season Aug. 11, falling to Rubcon 3-2 and then losing to Hustisford 9-0 later in the day. Rubicon beat the Oakfield Oaks 6-0 to remain in third place in the Northern Division. In playoff action this weekend, Hartford will play against Kewaskum and Rubicon will play against Brownsville Aug. 17. Rubicon will then play against Kewaskum Aug. 18. Land O'Lakes finals The season came to an end for both West Bend Land O'Lakes teams this past weekend on Aug. 10. The West Bend Benders lost to Grafton 6-1 in the Northern Division playoffs while the West Bend 7 Up lost to the Menomonee Falls Lakers 3-2.

The fall home care checklist

By Sam Erickson Maybe its going back to school, maybe its the shorter days or maybe its the blinding lights signaling the holiday season ahead, but fall home improvement projects often get tossed aside or neglected in favor of more exciting, interesting or pressing activities. This short checklist will help guide you to the most important elements to monitor and maintain in your home, keeping you and your family safe and maximizing the life of your home. When the time changes, its time to check the batteries in your smoke detectors. Making sure they are still operational is quick and easy and will bring peace of mind for another six months. Similarly, every year, you should check your fire extinguishers to ensure that they have the proper pressure. Look for dents and dings, and make sure the pin is in the correct position. Fall is a great time to do this, as youll be spending more time indoors. If the pressure has fallen too low, find a professional to recharge them for you. Most people dont use their chimney in the summer, and soot can build up over the course of a year. Other debris like birds nests or even leaves can create unsafe blockages. Have your chimney inspected by a professional if you plan to use it through the winter. Small animals will be looking for a warm place to sleep, and your home is a great option for them. Perform routine pest control in your area, watching out for places where animals might get into your home. Most importantly, youll want to have your furnace and heating system checked by a professional. This can save you big money on your heating bill, and an inspection can ensure that there isnt a dangerous buildup of carbon monoxide in your home. Furnace and air filters should be changed regularly to maximize safety and efficiency. If you are planning on using space heaters, humidifiers or dehumidifiers, they are a great addition to your checklist. Clean them off and inspect the heating and electrical elements for safety, particularly if they have been out of sight in storage for the warmer months. Finally, check the caulking around your home. Caulk is a cheap compound that anyone can apply, and it will reduce the amount of energy loss from your home and prevent water damage to flooring, walls and windows in the kitchen and bathroom. This is a big list and its certainly not comprehensive but all of these things can be accomplished in one weekend day. Spending minimal time improving and protecting your home for the winter season will provide great returns.

Dear Dr. Winter, Mother is 96 years old and she started wearing dentures at about 60. She has no lower bone left! She has tried denture paste but it is useless. She eats the paste, gets sick to her stomach and when she leaves it out her lower denture bounces like a basketball when trying to eat. She can only drink her food now and is not a candidate for any surgery. Any suggestions? Dear L, I am sorry for your mothers problems. I would need to see her existing denture to evaluate the bite, the extensions of the denture acrylic and make sure it is fabricated properly to optimize her situation. When people have no bone left a soft silicone liner may help to increase the hold of the lower denture and provide more comfort. We do this by first testing it in tissue conditioner (like a soft band-aid) to see if her biting and chewing can be improved prior to making her a new set of dentures. That way she can see if we can help her before undergoing the expense of a new set of dentures. Lastly, I have successfully used mini-implants to stabilize dentures in patients with very little bone as we can place these in as little as 10 mm of bone. These would greatly help keep the dentures in place and prevent movement that interferes with her chewing! You can see videos of this on our website. The West Bend Co./Regal Ware Museum will hold its Annual Golf Outing at West Bend Lakes Golf Club on Thursday, Aug. 22.
