CanPlanters
Wedonthavemuchofagreenthumb,butsmallinsideplantsweveseemedtohaveluckwith.Placedina sunnywindow,asmallplantercangiveyoufreshherbsandlovelylittleflowers.Thisprojectwecameacrossa fewyearsago,andiseasyenoughforthekidstodoontheirown.Onlyonesteprequiresabitofparental assistant. Step1GatherMaterials Youwillneed: SmallTinCan(weusedacatfoodcan) ClothesPins Paints HammerandNail

Step2PrepCan Sincethiswillbeaplanter,wetappedasmallholeinthebottomofthecan.Thisistheadultspart,obviously, becauseitinvolvesadulttools.Tapverygentlyitisnotdifficulttopiercethetin.

Step3DecorateClothesPins Thisstepisactuallyoptional,butclothespinsaretooboringforusnottopaint.AcrylicpaintsorevenSharpies, arefantasticforaddingasplashofcolor.HereisanexampleofpinsJilliandecorated:

Afteryourpinsaredecorated,justclipthemtothesideofthecan.InJilliansexample,shepurposelyleftouta

pinbecauseitwouldmessupherpattern.Wehadtospacethemalittledifferently,butitlooksperfect regardless. Step5Plant Addsoiluptotheedgeofthecan.Plantflowersorherbsinside,andsettheminthewindow.Jilliansflowerpot hasaspotinourwindowrightnextthebasil:

Wevealsostartedusingplasticlidsfromrandomcontainersunderourplanters.Notonlydotheytakeupless room,butaddonemorewaytorecycle.

FinalNote Weplantomakeseveralmoreoftheseniftyplanters,andstartaminiherbgardeninthewindow.Havingfresh herbsonhandinthekitchenisWONDERFUL.ThebasilwegrewthissummerwasPERFECTwithhomemade spaghettisaucemadewithtomatoesfromtheoutdoorgarden.Yetwecandobetter,andplantoplantoregano, dill,andafewotherherbsweuseonaregularbasis.
