Welcome to your
new community
newspaper
By TIM RONALDSON
The Delran Sun
Welcome to the first edition of
your new hometown newspaper.
And when I say your newspa-
per, I mean it.
The Delran Sun will be mailed
to you every week. Inside, you
will find, to a great degree, what
you want to read about. We will
cover the basics government,
the schools, etc. but, throughout
our history, weve found that giv-
ing our readers the opportunity
to shape the content of their
paper works well for all.
What you wont find is nation-
al and international news that is
already available on the Internet,
or news from surrounding towns.
The Delran Sun is all about Del-
ran, and only Delran.
The Sun is published by
Elauwit Media. We started our
South Jersey business by launch-
ing The Haddonfield Sun, a free
community newspaper, in August
2004.
Since then, we have added
newspapers in Moorestown,
Cherry Hill, Voorhees, Medford,
Marlton, Mt. Laurel, Shamong
and Tabernacle in South Jersey.
In Central Jersey, we have Prince-
ton, Montgomery, Hopewell,
Lawrence and West Windsor.
The Delran Sun is our 15th,
being launched the same week as
No. 16, The Cinnaminson Sun.
Delran has been on our radar
for a number of years. Unfortu-
nately, that recession thing got in
the way, so well file this start
date under better late than
never.
Theres another story in this
edition about how you can sub-
mit articles, letters, photos and
the like for publication.
Here, though, Id like to ex-
plain a bit about our philosophy
and what kinds of submissions
we really appreciate.
Our goal as a newspaper pub-
lisher always has been to not only
cover the traditional news, but to
also allow communities to cele-
brate their individual and collec-
tive achievements.
Thats why, inside of our news-
papers, youll read stories about

Farmers Market every Tuesday
By CANDICE ROBERTS
The Delran Sun
Rain or shine, the Delran
Farmers Market is the event of
the evening in town on Tues-
days. That was particularly true
on Aug. 6, when special guests
New Jersey Secretary of Agri-
culture Douglas H. Fisher and
New Jersey Health Commission-
er Mary E. ODowd arrived to
deliver proclamation awards to
Market Manager and Township
Councilwoman Lona Pangia.
Pangia received two awards,
one from the governors office
and one from the freeholders.
Delran Farmers Market was
chosen for its great reviews it
has had for being a new farmers
market. It keeps up its presence
on Facebook and currently has
between 14 to 16 vendors each
week.
About 400 cars show up each
Tuesday to the Delran Farmers
Market.
But the market is in need of
volunteers, Pangia said. It cur-
rently has about 20 volunteers,
and they are the core to the
farmers market.
I couldnt do it without the
volunteers. I cant thank them
enough, Pangia said.
National Farmers Market
Week ran from Aug. 4 to Aug. 10.
It was a week to celebrate with
the township and state officials

athletic scores to Scouting
awards, calendar items and much
more.

We publish every Wednesday,

and how.
Be sure to include a phone
number or e-mail address if you
want readers to contact you

number marked not for publica-
tion just in case we have any
questions and need to reach you

F
rom Day 1 here at Elauwit, we
have yearned to expand the
sports content in the towns we
cover. The youth sports scene is one
that draws a lot of attention and inter-
est from players, parents and commu-
nity members alike, and we have al-
ways known that it was a key area of
coverage for us.
Starting with this weeks issue, we
are excited to announce that your
towns youth sports from Little
Leagues to youth soccer to high school
sports will receive the extra atten-
tion they deserve. Nick Cohen, our for-
mer associate editor for the towns of
Mt. Laurel, Shamong and Tabernacle,
will take the reins as our first-ever
sports reporter, responsible for cover-
ing every one of our towns.
This week, you will see extensive
fall sports previews for each of your
towns public high schools, including a
profile story and full season schedules
for each sport. We will have another
similar preview for the winter and
spring sports seasons in the upcoming
2013-2014 school year.
We are planning regular coverage of
high school sports throughout the sea-
sons, as well as profile stories and pho-
tos of youth sports. After all, high
school sports arent the only games in
town.
Finally, Nick is working on an exten-
sive, multi-part series on safety in
youth sports how it has changed and
its effects on youth sports, from the
professional level all the way down to
the local level. We expect the series to
begin sometime this fall.
If you are a coach, parent, player or
fan who has a story idea, photo or invi-
tation to cover an event, please contact
Nick directly.
While we are greatly increasing our
focus on sports coverage, we still need
your help to keep us in tune and up to
date with all the happenings through-
out town. Please continue to send in
your photos, game roundups and story
ideas. Your help can only make our
coverage even better.
Play ball!!
Starting this week, expect a big push in sports coverage

Phase one for community park to wrap up in September
By CANDICE ROBERTS
The Delran Sun
Phase one for Delran Community Park
is wrapping up in early September.
Construction began for phase one on
July 29, 2012.
Delran Community Park was funded by
a commitment of $800,000 from the Green
Acres Program, and $250,000 from the Mu-
nicipal Park Improvement Grant Program.
A $1 million balance came from the town-
ship open space tax.
Phase one includes four ball fields, one
synthetic field that is ready to be used this
fall and three grass fields that will need to
go through two growing seasons.
The initial clearing of the site includes
storm water management improvements,
construction of the entrance for access
into the site from Hartford Road, the park
entrance sign, the parking area, sidewalks
and walkways, the fencing, dugouts, foul
poles and backstops. Also included is the
foul ball protection netting, underground
irrigation for all fields, the water well, the
electric service for the well, the future site
lighting and necessary connections for fu-
ture underground utilities.
Jim Winckowski, project manager with
CME Associates, said the rain has caused
corrective work throughout the year, but
they are on schedule to complete phase one
by early September.
He is starting to see the park come to-
gether and is hopeful that the synthetic
field will be used as early as this fall or up-
coming spring.
I think the Delran Community Park
will be the landmark for Delran. It will fea-
ture something for everyone, Mayor Ken
Paris said.
The park will feature state-of-the-art
recreational facilities including softball,
baseball, soccer, lacrosse and football for
all children and adults, including a play-
ground, and restrooms designed in accor-
dance with the Americans with Disabili-
ties Act.
There will also be passive recreation,
which will include landscaping, communi-
ty gardens and nature trails, including a
footbridge.
It has been a slow process with the
weather, Councilwoman Lona Pangia
said. Looking ahead, she has begun plan-
ning Trick-or-Trunk, a safe environment
for kids to trick-or-treat, and one of the pro-
posed locations is the Delran Community
Park parking lot.
The township has applied for a $250,000
grant under the Municipal Park Improve-
ment Grant Program.
We are hoping to hear back in the next
month, said Jeffrey Hatcher, the business
administrator.
Phase two will include a concession

Sports lighting

during phase two
building with restrooms for res-
idents with special needs or
physical challenges, Paris said.
A barrier-free playground
area will be constructed during
phase two for residents with
special needs and physical
handicaps, in accordance with
the Americans with Disabilities
Act.
Sports lighting for the base-
ball and softball fields and light-
ing for the parking area will
also be installed in phase two.
Since working for my father
when he was alive, on special
needs educational programs for
the state, I became very passion-
ate about this project. I wanted
to dedicate something that was
important to him, and that is
how I came up with the idea for
a special needs and multipur-
pose park. I wanted Delran
Township to host Special
Olympic Games in the county,
Paris said.

as well as an opportunity to learn
about fresh fruits and vegetables
that are available at the local farm
market in Delran. ODowd cele-
brated the week by eating more
fresh fruit and vegetables.
Fresh as fresh gets, is Jersey,
ODowd said.
This is a new market, and it is
their first year. We are bringing
attention to their market, and
helping showcase it during Na-
tional Farmers Market Week,
Fisher said.
Assemblyman Herb Conaway
is looking for long-term health
benefits at the Delran Farmers
Market.
I am very excited to be at this
event at Delran. There are over
300 chemicals in our bodies today
that should not be there. People
should know the source of the
food they are consuming, and that
its healthy for them, he said.
Hayniczs Orchardview Farm
Market and Greenhouse, a work-
ing farm since 1952 in Mon-
roeville, enjoys coming to the Del-
ran Farmers Market every week.
We have been at the Delran
market since its opening day and
not missed a single Tuesday. The
customers have been great, and
come out rain or shine, owner
Kathy Haynicz said.
First-time vendor, Jims Jar-
head Jerky, plans to come here the
rest of the farm market.
The Juice Girl, Christine Pat-
ton, sells fresh green detox juice,
and comes out every week, rain or
shine. Patton blends fresh fruits
and vegetables, stating they make
for the best energy you can get.
There are so many benefits to
farm markets, the health benefits,
and they help support local farms
and the local economy, said
Aimee R. Belgard, county free-
holder.
First-timer Lucille Boone from
Burlington said, I think I will be
a regular customer with all the
fresh vegetables.

The Delran Sun
Hurricanes Sandy and Irene
taught Burlington County how to
prepare for the unexpected when
it comes to serious weather.
The Atlantic hurricane season
lasts from June 1 to Nov. 30, and
New Jerseys tropical storm activ-
ity runs typically from August
through late October, according
to the New Jersey Hurricane Sur-
vival Guide. Hurricane Irene hit
the state in August 2011, and
Sandy was a late-season storm,
making landfall at the end of Oc-
tober.
According to Kevin Tuno,
Burlington County Office of
Emergency Management coordi-
nator, Hurricane Irene had a larg-
er impact on the county com-
pared to Sandy, which affected
communities closer to the bay, in-
cluding Bass River and Washing-
ton Township.
The biggest thing is promot-
ing more of an awareness to resi-
dents, Tuno said, adding resi-
dents need to heed warnings and
properly prepare for a serious
weather event.
Make a plan, prepare a kit
When the Weather Channel
and local news stations begin
broadcasting the possibility of a
hurricane, go over your emer-
gency plan. According to the hur-
ricane survival guide, get togeth-
er with your family and create a
communications plan ahead of
time. Keep a written record of all
important phone numbers and
designate an individual outside
the state to serve as a family point
of contact. Make sure family
members know who this person
is and how to contact them. After
a disaster or evacuation, all fami-
ly members should make contact
with the designated individual.
Try choosing a certain time for
everyone to check in.
Additionally, a family should
have a kit prepared. Build it up
over a period of time, Tuno rec-
ommends.
You can go online to a number
of different locations and find
kits already made, Tuno said.
By the time youre done, youll
be well prepared, especially if
you need to stay in your home a
number of days.
Visit Ready.gov and search dis-
aster kit for checklists to help pre-
pare.
Preparing your home
Tuno suggests residents have
supplies on hand for a minimum
of 72 hours.
At this point, I suggest dou-
bling that, Tuno said. You
should have nonperishable food,
food that you may not have to
cook if you lose electricity and
have an electric stove.
Additionally, there needs to be
enough water, one gallon per per-
son per day, in the event water
supply becomes unavailable, es-
pecially in rural areas.
Most of the time, water con-
tamination happens because
theres failure to water treatment
plants or in a rural area when
wells in the yard get flooded out,
Tuno said. You have a possibility
of your well being contaminated

He advises residents to boil
water and be aware of water advi-
sories. If residents are forced to
boil water, be sure to do it for 10
minutes. Fresh batteries, portable
radios and flashlights should also
be available.
You should also have extra
batteries on hand for any items
other than flashlights or radio if
the kids have something that
needs to be charged, Tuno said.
According to Tuno, various
stores sell items to keep phones
and other electronics charged
through a hand crank.
Keep extra medications on
hand or get some immediately
through a doctor or pharmacist if
you have the ability to, Tuno
said.
Shelter preparation
Burlington County shelters
hosted approximately 400 people
from Ocean County, most of
whom came without dry clothes,
towels or toiletries due to flooding
and the emergency situation.
Most shelters dont come
equipped with towels or clothes
for people, Tuno said. Luckily
we were able to get towels and
warm clothes for the people that
came. We got some towels from
correctional facilities and hospi-
tals the next day.
Tuno notes its hard to be sure
if there are going to be cots or
blankets and pillows.
We suggests blankets, pillows,
medications, personal hygiene
and a change of clothes, Tuno
said.
Additionally, come with snacks
and bottles of water in case food
and water havent arrived yet.
Elderly, pets
Dont forget about the elderly
and your pets.
If the storm is touted to be se-
vere for this area, family mem-
bers, if you have elderly, should
convince them to stay with you
until the storm is over, Tuno
said. They should bring whatev-
er they need medicine wise to be
self sufficient for a number of
days.
Pets need a plan as well. Be
sure to have a supply of food and
medication on hand.
If you have a pet and have to
go to a shelter, make sure its pet
friendly, Tuno said.
When we establish shelters
here in Burlington County, we
have certain shelters as pet
friendly shelters. You may not be
able to be with them overnight,
but we allow them.
