Pinwheel Oval Rug

I wanted to use up the huge balls of Zpagetti and Strengels I had in my stash. I also wanted to create a rug to lay underneath our salon table. We used to have a rug in our previous home but it was a bit damaged so it did not come along to our new home. It has been four years since our rug left us, but right now, I managed to make a toe warming rug in my style (the colours and the pattern) and my husbands style, who thought a circle was a bit awkward to lay underneath our rectangular salon table. So that is why I designed it to grow into a more oval shape.

General information

designs by Barbara de Bruin -Karnekamp

This rug is designed for superbulky yarn, but you can choose any yarn you want. Also you can make the rug any size you want.
Skill level Beginner Abbreviations Ch: chain Sl st: slip stitch Sc: single crochet Hdc: half double crochet Dc: double crochet Notes Working with Zpagetti or other similar yarns is really tiring for your hands, wrists and arm. Take frequent breaks and listen to your body. Work loosely as this yarn is very elastic. The pattern of the rug was inspired by the Pinwheel crochet vest designed by Amy Depew of The Laughing Willow. Finished measurement This rug can be made to a custom size. The rug used as an example is approx 130 cm (50) wide and 370 cm (158) in circumference. Materials 6 Balls of Zpagetti, Strengels or similar textile yarn. It is a super bulky weight yarn. The balls come in amounts such as a kilo, so I cannot give you yardage/amount of meters. 10 mm crochet hook (size P)

Round 6: Ch 3, dc in same st, dc once in next three st, ch 1, *dc twice in same st, dc once in next three st, ch 1.* Repeat from * to * to end. (60 dc, 12 ch 1) Continue to increase in the described manner. The first stitch after the chain space will be the stitch where you need to increase. Just continue until the rug is almost the size you want it to be. How to turn the rug oval shaped This shape can be done in any size pinwheel rug. The pinwheel pattern itself yields 12 parts/pattern repeats in a circle if so to say (imagine it like a pie, it has 12 slices). You need to divide these parts so that the sides will grow with the pinwheel pattern, but the bottom and top will not. It is probably an uncoventional method, but I liked the result. The oval shape is really subtle in my rug, but if you add more rounds it will be more prominent. I will not give any specific stitch counts so that you can easily apply this method to your own rug. Work all stitches in back loop only. Round 1: Sl st twice into first st, sl st your way along part 1 of the pinwheel, ch, sc twice in first st and sc in each st in half of the stitches of part 2 and hdc in each st in the second half of part 2, ch, dc twice in first st and dc in each stitch in part 3, ch, dc twice in first st and dc in each st in part 4, ch, hdc twice in first st of part 5, hdc in half of of the stitches of part 5 and sc in the second half of the stitches of part 5, ch, sl st twice in first st of part 6 and slip st in each st, ch, sl st twice in first st of part 7 and sl st in each st, ch, sc twice in first st of part 8 and sc in half of the stitches of part 8 and hdc in the stitches of the second half of part 8, ch, dc twice in first st of part 9, dc once in all stitches of part 9, ch, dc twice in first st of part 10, dc once in rest of stitches of part 10, ch, hdc twice in first st of part 11, hdc in each st of first half of part 11, sc in each st of second half of part 11, ch, sl st twice in first st of part 12, sl st in each st of part 12, sl st to first sl st of round. Repeat round 1 as much as you like. Finishing round: Sl st in each st and ch-sp, sl st to first st of round. Fasten off and weave in ends.
