Welcome to North Platte High School. Whether you are new to the district, or new to high school, we are glad you are here. I hope that this handbook will assist you as you make important decisions regarding your future. The Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education set the goal of every Missouri student graduating high school college and career ready by 2020. A critical component of this is the Personal Plan of Study. This handbook will assist you as we work together to maintain your Personal Plan of Study. We will revisit and update the PPOS yearly, or more often if needed. This guide should be used to help you to reach and accomplish your educational and career goals. It is a good idea to: Review all requirements for graduation Read information about career paths Read course descriptions Work with Mrs. Justus to complete and maintain a Personal Plan of Study (typically done around class registration time).

U.S. and Missouri Constitution Tests: Students must pass the U.S. Constitution test and the Missouri Constitution test in order to graduate. All students will take End of Course (EOC) exams in Algebra I, English II, Biology and American Government before graduating. They may also be tested in English I, Algebra II, Geometry and American History.

A+ Program
Students that meet the criteria identified below, as well as any other criteria that may be established by the state in the future, may be eligible for two years of tuition at a Missouri community college or vocational school though the A+ Program. HOW DO I BECOME AN A+ STUDENT? Get a copy of the A+ guidelines and contract from Mr. Matt or Mrs. Justus. Read the guidelines and complete the Program Agreement. As long as you meet all of the requirements you should receive the A+ scholarship. It is a good idea to sign up early for the program so that you have time to complete all of the requirements. Complete and sign an A+ Agreement and turn it into Mr. Matt. Attend A+ school for three consecutive years prior to graduation. Graduate with an overall GPA of 2.5 or higher on a 4.0 scale. Graduate with a 95% percent cumulative attendance record for grades 9-12. Perform 50 hours of unpaid, approved, academic tutoring or mentoring. Perform 15 hours of volunteer service that benefits the school/community. Maintain a record of good citizenship and avoid the use of alcohol and unlawful drugs. Complete the FAFSA after January 1st of your senior year. Register with the Selective Service, if required to do so. Attend a Missouri community college or postsecondary vocational/technical school on a full-time basis and maintain a GPA of 2.5 or higher. Score Advanced or Proficient on the Algebra I EOC (End of Course) exam (starting with the class of 2015).

To maintain ongoing eligibility after high school, a student must: Attend a public community college or vocational/technical school on a full-time basis. Maintain a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher Make a good faith effort to secure Federal Aid by completing the FAFSA each year. WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF BECOMING AN A+ STUDENT? Students graduating with A+ designation may be eligible for two years of tuition grants to attend any public Missouri community college or vocational/technical school. As a full time-student. An A+ student may be eligible for scholarships from four-year colleges and universities. The tuition grants may be available to the A+ student for up to four years after high school graduation. Students graduating from a two-year school may be eligible for transfer scholarships to four-year colleges and universities.

Dual Credit
The North Platte School District offers dual credit courses through area colleges. Dual credit may be earned in high school and college if the student meets enrollment guidelines. The student must apply to the college, be accepted, and pay a reduced fee for college credit to be awarded. At the conclusion of their senior year, students should request that their college transcript be sent to the college they will be attending. Students should make sure that any dual credit course they take will transfer to the college they plan to attend.

Assessment Information ACT (American College Testing Program)


The ACT is a combination of four exams consisting of English, math reading, and science reasoning. The ACT is required by many colleges as part of the application process for admission. This is the most commonly used college entrance exam in the midwest.

SAT

The SAT is a standardized test for college admissions. It is predominately used by coastal schools. ASVAB (Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery) Juniors at North Platte High School take the ASVAB. It measures students strengths and potential for future success. The ASVAB also provides career information for various civilian and military occupations and is an indicator for success in future endeavors including college, vocational school and or the military. EOC (End of Course Assessment) End of Course Assessments are required the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education for various high school level classes. North Platte tests in Algebra I, Algebra II, Geometry, English I, English II, American History, Government and Biology. PLAN (Preliminary American College Testing Program) The PLAN is a shorter version of the ACT that is given to sophomores. It provides practice for the ACT test. It includes tests in English, math, reading and science reasoning. It also contains a career interest inventory. It is very helpful in assisting sophomores as they start post-secondary planning.

PSAT
The Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test is a standardized test that provides practice for the SAT, and gives students a chance to enter National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC) scholarship programs. It measures critical reading skills, math problem solving skills and writing skills. For more information go to:http://www.collegeboard.com/student/testing/psat/about.html. Typically, the PSAT is given to interested juniors.

Missouri Connections
Missouri Connections is a web-based resource for exploring career interests, identifying interest areas and researching occupations. It provides information on career paths, clusters, pathways and career options. Students can create a portfolio with their educational plans, resumes and more. COMMUNICATION ARTS From the many semester courses offered by the English Department, there is an opportunity for students to design programs to fit particular needs and expectations. Care must be taken, however, to make wise choices, because choice always requires responsibility. Fortunately, every course listed will aid students in their growth in reading, writing, viewing and listening skills. Course Title: Language Arts I (0001) Prerequisite: None Grade Level: 9 required course Course Length: 1 year Unit(s) of credit: 1 unit Course Overview: In this required language arts course, students are given the opportunity to reinforce basic language skills with special emphasis on writing employing the writing process. Students can also expect to study short stories, poetry, drama, and novels and will prepare several essays in response to literature read. Students will set independent reading goals each semester. Course Title: Language Arts II (0002) Prerequisites: Successful completion of Language Arts I Grade Level: 10 - required course Course Length: 1 year Unit(s) of credit: 1 unit Course Overview: In this required language arts course, students are given the opportunity to reinforce basic language skills with special emphasis on developing critical thinking through creative and analytical writing employing the writing process. Students can also expect to study short stories, poetry and drama. An oral presentation of a book read outside of class is required. Course Title: Language Arts III (0003) Prerequisites: Language Arts I & II Grade Level: 11 - required course Course Length: 1 year Unit(s) of credit: 1 unit Course Overview: During this course of study, emphasis is placed on the analysis and interpretation of American Literature. Students will employ the writing process as they incorporate MLA standards. A yearlong writing assignment, The American Journal, will showcase personal writings. Course Title: Language Arts IV (0004) Prerequisite: Language I, II, and III Grade Level: 12 Course Length: 1 year Unit of credit: 1 unit Course Overview: Language Arts IV will include in-depth practice in critical thinking based on selected works of British, American and world literature. It will also focus on advanced composition. Students should be well prepared for college entrance and advanced placement tests.

Course Title: Language IV Dual Credit Composition (0004) Prerequisite: Language I, II, and III 21 on ACT Grade Level: 12 Course Length: 1 year Unit of Credit: 1 unit for high school plus college credit depending on the institution Course Overview: Language Arts IV-Dual Credit-Composition integrates reading, writing, speaking and listening. Fiction and nonfiction will be read and analyzed to service as a springboard for discussion and written composition. Students will develop composition through various types of written essays. Course Title: Mythology (005) Prerequisite: Language Arts I & II Grade Level: 11 & 12 Course Length: year Unit of credit: Course Overview: A Junior-Senior level course taken for the interesting study of mythology as it pertains to readings and literature. College-bound or otherwise strong, interested students could take this course and should succeed. This course alternates every other year with the Novels class. Course Title: American Short Story (015) Prerequisite: Language Arts I & II Grade Level: 11 & 12 Course Length: year Unit of credit: Course Overview: A Junior-Senior level course taken for in-depth study of the American short story. A course taken by college-bound or otherwise strong, interested students. This course alternates every other year with the Novels class. Course Title: Novels (0016) Prerequisite: Language Arts I & II Grade Level: 11 & 12 Course Length: 1 year Unit of credit: 1 Course Overview: During this course of study, emphasis is placed on analysis and interpretation of selected works of American and British authors. Students will then respond to the material. This course is offered every other year. Course Title: Journalism (0009) Prerequisite: Application approved by instructor, at least a C average in language classes, Intro to Media, no more than 15 students total Grade Level: 10-12 Course Length: 1 year Unit of credit: 1 unit Course Overview: Students will have hands-on experience in advertising, selling and producing the North Platte yearbook using desktop publishing technology. Yearbook layout, design, writing techniques and photography will be key components of this course. This course requires significant amounts of time spent out of class in order to sell ads, photograph events and meet deadlines. There may be required workdays after school in order to meet set deadlines. Journalism is a practical art.

Course Title: Introduction to Media Prerequisite: at least a C average in language classes Grade level: 9-12 Course Length: 1 year Unit of Credit: 1 unit Course Overview: Students will learn the differences between hard news stories, features, editorials and sports stories while producing them for the North Platte website. Photography, writing and editing skills will be an integral part of this course. This course requires significant amounts of time spent out of class in order to interview subjects, attend and photograph events and meet deadlines. Media is a practical art.

FOREIGN LANGUAGE This program is designed to give the student insight into the language and culture of the Spanish ancestry. Course Title: Spanish I (0011) Prerequisites: none Grade Level: 7-12 Course Length: 1 year Unit of credit: 1 Course Overview: In Spanish I communication arts students learn and apply the basic concepts to become independent readers, writers, and speakers of Spanish. The students will take Spanish communications and translate them to English and English to Spanish. Students will practice listening and interpreting oral information. In addition, various aspects of Hispanic culture will be incorporated throughout the year to demonstrate cultural diversities.

Course Title: Spanish II (0012) Prerequisites: Spanish I Grade Level: 10-12 Courses Length: 1 year Unit of credit: 1 Course Overview: The primary objective of this Spanish course is to build upon and expand the concepts learned in Spanish I. Upon successful completion of this course, the student will have gained a larger vocabulary and a more precise comprehension of the grammatical structure of the language in order for Spanish study comprehension. The student will have the ability to listen, read, write and speak basic Spanish. Course Title: Spanish III (0013) Prerequisites: Spanish II Grade Level: 11-12 Course Length: 1 year Unit of credit: 1 Course Overview: The primary objective of this Spanish course is to learn more concepts of the Spanish language and culture, then take those concepts and apply them in real world settings. SOCIAL STUDIES In addition to the basic number of required units in Social Studies, every graduate of North Platte High School must pass Geography, World History, American History, American Government and the Missouri and U.S. Constitution tests. Course Title: Geography (0104) Prerequisite: none Grade Level: 9 Course Length: 1 year Unit of credit: 1 unit Course Overview: The high school geography program stresses the major elements of geographical study and analysis (such as location, place, movement, regions) and their relationships to changes in society and environment. Activities will include map interpretation and identification, as well as, description and comparison of geographic regions.

Course Title: World History(0102) Prerequisite: 9th grade Geography Grade Level: 10 - required course Course Length: 1 year Unit of credit: 1 unit Course Overview: The discipline of world history will be an in-depth study of the chronological events of the world. Knowledge of world history addresses significant events, people, ideas, trends, and conflicts with concern for causes, consequences, and relationships across time and place. Course Overview: The study of Government helps students to develop a better understanding of the foundations of our democracy. The relationships of the three branches of this system are also considered. Citizenship, including both rights and responsibilities, is stressed. The Missouri Constitution is also studied in great detail and in order to graduate, students will have to pass a test over the Missouri Constitution.

Course Title: College Psychology (0108) Prerequisite: 3.0 GPA, and permission of the principal Grade Level: 11-12 Course Length: 1 semester Unit of credit: 3 college credits, and 1/2 unit of high school credit Course Overview: A college level interactive course to give credit in college for the general psychology course required at most colleges. Upon completion of the course, the student must ask the college to send a transcript of their grade to the college they will be attending. Course offered through Central Methodist University ITV. Course Title: Dual Credit Sociology Prerequisite: 3.0 GPA and permission of the principal Grade Level: 11-12 Course Length: 1 Semester Unit of Credit: 3 units of college credit and unit of high school credit Course Overview: A study of social interaction and its products; culture, personality, social groups, institutions, and social change. SCIENCE Course Title: 9th Grade (Physics) (0201) Grade Level: 9 Course Length: 1 year Unit of credit: 1 Course Overview: Students will begin a three-year science sequence. The first semester will consist of the study of the SI system of measurement, conversion within the SI system and SI English conversions. Students will also cover how to conduct laboratory experiments and how to properly prepare a lab report. Students will use dependent and independent variables to prepare graphs (bar, line and multiple line). Students will also begin a study of ecology. Second semester students will study matter and the changes in matter, atomic structure, Periodic Law and valence electrons, chemical bonding. They will learn how to name compounds, write correct chemical formulas for compounds and how to balance chemical equations. Course Title: 10thGrade (Chemistry) (0203) Prerequisites: 9th grade Physics Grade Level: 10 Course Length: 1 year Unit of Credit 1

Students will examine the nature of living organism through a variety of laboratory activities, lecture, media, projects, and homework assignments. Topics include the scientific method, cellular biology, genetics and biotechnology, evolution, ecology, plants, and animals. Course Title: Conceptual Physics Prerequisites: Grade Level: 9 Course Length: 1 year Units of credit: 1 Course Overview: Course Title: Dual Credit Chemistry (0207) Prerequisites: A 21 composite on ACT, 10th Grade Chemistry Grade Level: 11/12 Course Length: 1 year Unit of credit: 1 Course Overview: General Chemistry I is a beginning course for students with a good high school background in chemistry. This course must be taken concurrently with Chemistry 24-115. This course covers fundamental chemical principles such as atoms, molecules, chemical reactions, stoichiometry, and gas laws as it progresses towards a detailed study of quantum chemistry, periodic relationships, and molecular structure and properties. Grade Level: 11-12 Course Length: 1-2 years Units of credit: 3 per year Course Overview: The Career Center provides a type of vocational training that will be suitable to individuals and meet the needs of business and industry. Good attendance and good conduct in high school, plus an aptitude for the area of training in which the student is interested is essential. Building Trades-The Building Trades Program is certified by the Association of General Contractors (AGC). Construction occupations, including home building and light commercial construction, are the basis of the program. Classroom instruction involves the introduction of technical information pertaining to the building trades industry and constructing a house or other building. Students spend much of their time outdoors at the construction site where safety is our first priority. To complete the required skills, high school students attend three hours per day for two school years. Culinary Arts- is designed as an entry-level course. The mission and goals of this two-year American Culinary Federation certified program is to prepare students for entry-level employment as a cook, pastry cook, entry level management or to continue their education in the Culinary Arts field. Working from the ground up, students experience the sights, sounds and aromas in a commercially equipped kitchen. Students will actively participate in the production of daily breakfast, lunch and occasional larger functions. To complete all the required skills, high school students attend three hours per day for two school years. This
program is certified by the Secondary Committee of the American Culinary Federation Education Foundation Accrediting Commission.

Diesel Technology- This two-year program will prepare students for an entry level Diesel Technician position. The program provides entry level skills and knowledge in all phases of diesel equipment repair, preventative maintenance, personal and shop management, parts work for transportation, construction, mobile and stationary diesel equipment applications. To complete all the required skills, high school students attend three hours per day for two school years. Early Childhood Careers- Preschool teachers help shape our nations future by educating our youngest students. ECC students work in established local preschool classrooms to help them gain the knowledge and skills necessary to be successful in their chosen field. This program provides students with the coursework and preschool lab hours to earn a Child Development Associate (CDA) Certificate to teach preschool classes. To complete all the required skills, high school students attend three hours per day for two school years. Health Sciences- Health Sciences is a one or two year course designed for high school students wishing to enter the medical field. Students will acquire valuable knowledge and training that will prepare them for a variety of healthcare professions. Students must pass first semester with a C or higher to continue second semester. Students wishing to return for the optional second year internship must have completed the first year with a B or higher and have the instructor's recommendation. Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning & Refrigeration-HVACR is a course designed to prepare students for entry level employment as a technician in the heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration industry. Students successfully completing the program will be given the EPA 608 Refrigerant Certificate exam. This certification meets the Federal EPA requirements and is required for employment as a technician in the HVACR field. To complete all the required skills, high school students attend three hours per day for two school years. Industrial Welding- The Industrial Welding Program provides the opportunity to develop competence in welding procedures and practices. Students who successfully complete the program will have an opportunity

IT Professional- The IT Professional Program is a one or two year course. Beginning students will have the opportunity to test for the national Comp TIA A+ Certification. Advanced students will be prepared to test for the national CompTIA Network+ Certification. Students will work with hardware and software as they learn maintenance and troubleshooting. To complete all the required skills, high school students attend three hours per day for one or two school years. Law Enforcement/Crime Scene Investigation- This program is intended to be a general introduction to the American Criminal Justice System with emphasis on law enforcement. Students will explore U.S. Constitution Law and the Missouri Criminal Code. Some of the skills and knowledge of the general duties performed by law enforcement officials will be presented by officers from a variety of local law enforcement agencies adding their knowledge and experience with lectures and demonstrations throughout the program. Students will participate in lab activities related to each area of study.

STUDENT AIDES Course Title: Teacher, Office, or Lunchroom Prerequisites: Permission of the teacher and principal Grade Level: 11-12 Course Length: 1 year Unit of credit: 1/2 Course Overview: Each position is an individual situation between the teacher or supervisor and the student involved. If a student is interested in becoming an aide, they must get an application from the counselor. The student must get the signatures of the teacher and principal before registration begins. A student my only be an aide one time per school year. In order to be an aide, the student must not have earned a D or F in the prior semester.
