Latidos - Irms Bront prlogo: Prism and light Latidos gathers a selection of stories with shared, uncommon ways of perceiving the world. Sometimes realistic and at other times delirious and poetic in tone, the authors journey through (briey and fable-like) the hidden spaces between science, religion, paganism, nature, history, mythology and aesthetics, in a voracious curiosity and innocently available way of looking at the world. Crossing over borders shamelessly, they are drawing pathways as if to attempt to understand the world. - Pedro Nora The text above served as an introduction to the edition of Latidos published in Portugal in 2010. Each month a story from the collection, translated into english for the rst time, will appear in tristesse engraved.

anticipation Goethe found himself laid down between the short vegetation of the mountain, receiving sun light, adjusting his breath to the rhythm of the soil while, listening attentively to the wind, he was rectifying the image of his own self. Intuitively, he felt a storm approaching and that its arrival would coincide with this discovery process. Joyful with the singularity of the situation, he let his sight stretch far away, in an effort to prolong the pleasurable feeling found in further knowledge of his own body and of his own Self, rescued from the unknown. Goethe embraced then his own destiny the will to be at one with the immense whole through metamorphosing himself with the surrounding vegetation.

marie roux - athabasca The Athabasca Glacier is probably the most famous glacier in northern America, with around 10.000 people walking on it every summer. It is part of the small surviving family of iceelds that were covering most of western Canada. One of its main attractions is a bus route on the ice, which takes visitors to a small ice meadow where they can get off and take a few steps. It has also continually for the past 125 years lost surface due to the warmer temperatures. Thats probably what also attracts curiosity, listening to the breaking and movement and being able to visually witness the affect of the climate, walking around the rocky desert and small milky lakes that use to be covered in ice.

Joe Stevens - diplopia lm These are stills from a lm Ive made about traveling with double vision - this is a condition I've had for seven months now. I had the misfortune of one of my eyes not fully moving to one side. The current diagnosis for this is internuclear ophthalmoplegia, which apparently is a disorder of conjugate lateral gaze in which the affected eye shows impairment of adduction. My left eye diverges from the right eye, which means that my brain sees double, or what they call diplopia. As my eyes no longer work together they see different images and my brain cannot comprehend the resulting information. This has led me to see things that arent there, resulting in my tripping over and walking into objects. In this new work I have continued my interest in creating moving pictures. Painters, photographers, and lmmakers have inspired its making and I have treated these animated landscapes as a simplied drawing. Trying to avoid putting in more than is necessary; I endeavour to balance the identity of the landscape, with the abstraction of the picture frame, reducing and simplifying the colour space. The soundtrack is being constructed from sounds I recorded inside the car; driving along different tarmac textures. I have also used a recording I did for framework radio intro, which Id recorded in a lay-by by the A30. These sounds have been mixed and treated.

Statement. The pictures neither feature dashing population concentration, nor swiftly expanding or technocratic cities. Furthermore, there are no signs for the rather extreme minimalism, which is often linked with Japans culture. Instead, we nd ourselves facing a calming atmosphere and artful resolution, within the slightly surrealistic landscape of the Shizouka quarter. Nevertheless, the locations portrayed in the photographs are very likely to appear rather alienating to an American audience. The items, the focus on room and structures and the striking absence of humans calls to mind the work of photographers such as Stephen Shore, Robert Adams and others forming the New Topography movement. Provincial Japan is a series concerned with regional, Japanese landscapes. It is all the more remarkable taking the context of American audiences into account, in the way and manner it hints into the direction of America's own Brummagem and regional landscape, which resonates strongly. Biography Guido Castagnoli was born in Turin, Italy, 1976. After his degree in Advertising Graphics and Communication, he began his career as an AD for a famous advertising agency in Milan. His interest in photography came about, as he shot his rst pictures with the old Leica belonging to his family. During the following years he gave his position at the agency up to pursue a path completely devoted to photography. His work has been exhibited in public and private institutions in Italy, Germany, England and Japan. He lives with his wife Seika and their babies Mei and Emi in Genoa, Italy.
