Having been coming to the area for 60 years and being a property owner for 30 years, I have watched the decline of a thriving community and so many local residents fight attempts to reinvent the area and bring new jobs and businesses here. All I can imagine is that those fighting this all have secure employment and dont mind that most young people have to leave their hometown to find employment. This proposal seems to be a good
team presented their concept for revitalizing the city at a packed public meeting at the Elks Lodge. Significantly, their presentation included mention of the Port Clinton Lighthouse. The Port Clinton Lighthouse Conservancy was pleased to see the lighthouse included in the development concept because it indicates broad public support for our efforts. However, a few words of explanation and clarification are perhaps needed to clear up any misunderstanding created by the inclusion of a lighthouse/viewing platform in the concept drawing.

BY MADELYN HILLE Why hello Gulf of Mexico... Weve been waiting a long time to see you and we are finally here! 70 days ago (exactly!) Adam and I put in at the headwaters of the Mississippi in Minnesota with our canoe, and our journey has finally come to a close. Three days ago we decided to trade the ocean liners for alligators and unexpectedly fulfill one of my life long dreams: to float down the Atchafalaya River, something Ive wanted to do ever since seeing the PBS documentary Atchafalaya Houseboat when I was 18,
to finish our journey. So here we are, in Morgan City, LA at the Gulf and heading to New Orleans for our final celebration soon! Thank you all so much for the support along the way! This has been the most difficult yet most amazing experience of my life and I cant believe its over! Heres to the next 2,300 miles. The P.O.R.T.S. Committee (People Organizing the Return of the Tall Ships) announces events for Port Clintons Battle of Lake Erie Bicentennial, marking the 200th anniversary of the Battle of Lake Erie and the gallant victory won by Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry of the American Navy. In September of 1813, during the War of 1812, Commodore Perry and his crew of 557 patriots prevailed over the British fleet in an epic battle near Put-in-Bay. Two hundred years later, we come together to celebrate Perrys victory, our nations sovereignty and the enduring peace between nations. This will be one of the largest celebrations in the history of Lake Erie and the Western Basin. Port Clinton will be hosting two Tall Ships, the Pathfinder and Playfair. The public will have the rare opportunity to view or board these ships for three days, along with reenactors, storytellers, cannon demonstrations, vendors at the Waterworks Park, as well as performances by the Ohio State Marching Band and, just confirmed, a performance by the United States Navy Band. All the festivities will take place in conjunction with the popular Knight of Columbus Peach, Perch, Polka and Pierogi Festival in downtown Port Clinton.

BUSINESS
The Beacon
Jills Bakery
Jills Bakery has become a cornerstone in the village of Marblehead. For the past 15 years, Jill Shrock has been coming in to work when most people are heading to bed. At 10 p.m. nightly, Jill comes to the bakery, turns on the ovens and starts preparing and baking her delectable treats, and she does this all by herself. Promptly at 5:30 a.m., she unlocks the doors and by 11:30 a.m., the shelves are bare. On any given morning you will see tourists and townspeople alike gathered at tables, drinking coffee and enjoying their favorite morning treat. Others leave with boxes or bags to take to work and share with co-workers or to take home and enjoy with their families. Although doughnuts are very popular (and delicious), Jills Ladylocks and nutrolls are her specialty. Always in demand, especially around the holidays, the orders are endless. On top of that, add in cookies and coffee cakes, you are sure to find something you like. On August 23rd and 30th, be sure to stop by the branch office of The Marblehead Bank on Bridge Rd. for a taste of Jills Bakery. The next time you are in Marblehead, stop by Jills and pick up a treat. Just remember to get there early because the bakery cases empty quickly. Area business owners may contact Marblehead Banks Lori Fletcher or Sherila Carr at the Peninsula branch at 419-732-6263 for further details of their business feature program and to reserve a time slot for their display. There is no charge to the business for this marketing opportunity.
