Reading genre narrative / Writing genre narrative Focus words (and meanings) this week: These can be practised for homework, be used to make a picture dictionary, be displayed in the classroom with picture prompts and could be the focus of the first 5 minutes of each lesson along with games and activities which help consolidate understanding of the vocabulary. His father said, The jungle is the snakes home. That snake is a python. It lives in the tall trees and thick bushes. When we come into the jungle, we are in the snakes habitat. We must show respect. In groups, the students continue writing the story (the modelled writing could be photocopied and given to groups). Use a variety of games or activities to quickly rehearse the vocabulary, which will be used throughout the lesson, which the students may not be familiar with. Listening and Speaking (introduction to shared read) Ask the children to recap the shared reads from Day 1 and Day 2. Ask if they can think of a different animal habitat in Borneo. Show a picture of a dirty beach. Ask the children to think why or how this happened to the beach. Draw two columns on the board with the headings Cause and Effect. Discuss the first 1-2 ideas with the children. This may be carried out as a whole class activity from this point, or you may ask the children to work in groups to think of their own ideas depending on the knowledge and ability level of your class. Nabil stopped and looked into the grass. Under a bush was a monitor lizard. Its tongue was flicking in and out. Its skin was grey and green. It had patterns on its sides. Nabil thought it was 1 metre long. He could see its claws. He called Syafee to come and look at the lizard. Syafee said, I think that lizard has been eating our baby chicks. Nabil said, My father said that when people live in an animals habitat, the animal must look for food in other places. Maybe the monitor lizard is hungry. Comprehension Questions: 1. Independent Writing Discuss the idea that a good story has a problem and a solution. Brainstorm a solution to Syafees problem from the shared read e.g. Syafee could keep his chicks in a cage; Syafee could leave food for the monitor lizard etc. Retell the story Write key words from the shared read on the board. Students independently write the fourth part of the story. or Change the story Revisit some of the problems the students came up with on day 3. Write ideas/keywords for solutions to the problems. Students independently continue the class/group writing including a solution. Remind the students about the routines for SSR and expect all students to be silently reading during this time. Monitor book/ text choices and advise where needed. Remember to model good reading behaviour. Use books and the Internet to find more pictures and information about the endangered animals of Borneo. Make a pictorial chart showing where the animals are from (e.g. Brunei, Sabah, etc). Students can ask family members and/or do research to find names of animals that are endangered or extinct. Students select books to borrow and complete the process once study task has been completed.
