IMPORTANT NOTICE To the Como/Kensington (Moresby Ward) Community

From Cr Kevin Trent and Cr Fiona Reid

August 2013

To the Como/Kensington community

With the upcoming Local Council elections, Cr Kevin Trent and I, Cr Fiona Reid, would like to take this opportunity to firstly thank you for your support. We would also like to provide an update on local government reform, including the impact on the City of South Perth and a brief summary of our activities over the last two years.
The upcoming October election is at a time of great change and exciting opportunity for Local Government. Firstly the City of South Perth, as part of its commitment to effective Local Government, will be reducing from twelve to eight Counsellors, with the Moresby Ward boundary extending to Henley St and down to Kent St (see map overleaf). Also as part of the State Governments Local Government reform, by the 2015 Local Government elections a new Council will be established, amalgamating the City of South Perth, Town of Victoria Park and part of Canning (up to Leach Hwy). Over the next two years it will be vital that the City of South Perth has a proactive, experienced and stable Council to ensure the proposed amalgamation has clear benefits for our community and in the interim South Perth continues to be a successful and effective Local Government. Whilst we both see the amazing opportunity these reforms present, we also know the challenges Council will face. Local representatives who can work with government, whilst clearly representing their community on issues such as rates, infrastructure and community assets, will be vitally important. This includes a strategic and pro-active response to ensuring vital assets such as the Crown Casino and Burswood Park remain in the new local government. The loss of the revenue from the Burswood is likely to have significant negative impacts, from increased rates to reduced services.

Over the last two years Kevin and I have been active members of your Council, a summary of our activities include:
Continued monthly Meet your Councillors community meetings. Actively contributed to South Perths positive influence on the outcome of the proposed local government reform, I as a member of the South Perth/Vic Park Taskforce and Kevin in his role as Deputy Mayor. Protected our unique streetscapes alongside promoting continued urban renewal and development. Positively contributed to the need for sustainable and economic waste disposal, as Rivers Regional Council members (delegate and deputy). Fiona is the City of South Perth Two Rivers Catchment Group delegate, which focuses on protecting and preserving natural environments. She is a member of the Kensington PCYC Advisory Group and has been a strong advocate for a City of South Perth public art strategy. is a member of the City of 3 Kevin South Perth Audit and Governance Committee, ensuring the City has sound governance structures. An advocate of community safety initiatives, Kevin is also the Kensington area Manager for Neighbourhood Watch. Advocated on behalf of residents to achieve important localised outcomes in our community.
