Seri Hadi Awang’s proposed unity talks
with Umno has thrown up so much confu-
sion and feelings of mistrust among Pakatan
Rakyat components that even the ruling Umno
is wondering if the idea can be realised.
Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin
Yassin said it was better for the Pakatan Rakyat
coalition members to settle among themselves

a concrete view on the proposed unity talks.

five days over maid abuse
KUALA LUMPUR: A 43-year-old housewife
has been remanded for five days over the
alleged abuse of her domestic helper Siti
Hajar, who escaped on Monday morning
and sought refuge at the Indonesian
Embassy.
Magistrate Hafiza Sauni set the remand
which will end on June 13.
Siti Hajar, who escaped from her em-
ployer’s Mont’ Kiara condominium and
flagged down a taxi, had alleged that she
was beaten by her employer, who had
also scalded her recently.
She said her employer had also failed
to pay her monthly wages of RM500 since
she started working from July 2006.
She had escaped at 1am and hid in
bushes until sunrise before seeking the
help of a passing taxi driver who sent her
to the embassy. She was interviewed by
embassy staff before being brought to
University Malaya Medical Centre for a
check-up. Siti Hajar lodged a police report
at the Jalan Travers police station later
that day.
When contacted by the embassy, the
employer had gone to the embassy and
reportedly admitted to abusing Siti Hajar.
Siti Hajar arrived in Malaysia on July
2, 2006, and was employed with another
person for four days before she was sent
to her current employer.

Muhyiddin also echoed Umno president
Datuk Seri Najib Abdul Razak’s statement that
the party was ever willing to hold talks with PAS
but would like to know more about the idea. He
said as of now the matter could not proceed as
parties in the Pakatan Rakyat did not seem to be
unanimous in their stand.
“Among the Pakatan parties, there are differ-
ent views. DAP said it was not consulted, PKR
was not agreeable. So, I’m not too sure whether
it is just a PAS idea or Pakatan idea. So, how
would we proceed?” he asked.
What other PR leaders said:
» DAP veteran Lim Kit Siang: “PR is now
election and to stop making statements that can
confuse PAS supporters, especially on the unity
government issue.
When Abdul Hadi first proposed the unity
government concept at the central working
committee meeting, it was never discussed till
it became the party’s official decision.”
Asked how the committee members reacted
to the proposal, Mustafa said: “Most of them did
not agree with the idea, I could see it from their
faces. But it remains as a concept because it was
never discussed.”
He pointed out that Abdul Hadi had related
his idea of forming a unity government to PKR
de facto leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, but
probably DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng
was not informed about it.
