The Vermont Fish & Wildlife Department
recently installed a 132-panel solar electric sys-
tem at their Bald Hill Fish Culture Station in
Newark. The system will replace 75% of current
electricity consumption with renewable solar
energy and will also provide a significant reduc-
tion in greenhouse gas emissions.
According to fish culture operations chief
Adam Miller, the project will eliminate nearly
800 tons of carbon dioxide emissions as well as
significantly reduce other greenhouse gases
such as sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxide. The
project will also save the department more than
$200,000 in energy costs over the life of the
panels.
The Fish and Wildlife Department is con-
stantly looking for ways to make its operations
more efficient and cost-effective for Vermonts
citizens, while also being good stewards of our
environment, said Miller.
The project is part of a long-term State
Agency Energy Plan to increase the use of
renewable resources in Vermonts state govern-
ment operations. Approximately half of the
project costs were funded by a grant from the
Vermont Small Scale Renewable Energy
Incentive Program through the Department of
Public Service.
In other energy-conscious efforts, the Fish &
Wildlife Department is in the second phase of
constructing a system at the Ed Weed Fish
Culture Station on Grand Isle that will recycle
heated water used to promote growth of trout
and salmon during the winter months. This con-
struction project has already conserved more
than 35,000 gallons of propane, saving the sta-
tion $56,000 in energy costs in two years. The
department expects these latest updates will
conserve roughly 40,000 gallons of propane
annually, in addition to greatly reducing water
consumption at the station.
Over a million fish are reared and released
into Vermonts waterways each year from the
fish hatcheries, supporting fishing opportunities
that have annually brought roughly $32 million
to the state.
These projects exemplify our commitment to
creating greener facilities, said Miller. Between
the reduction in greenhouse gases and the sav-
ings in energy costs, moving forward on these
projects was an easy decision to make.

Norwich University will debut the newly-
renovated Sabine Field on Saturday, Sept. 14,
with a rededication and grand reopening cere-
mony prior to the football teams 1:30pm home
opener against Saint Lawrence University.
The $6 million, 10-month renovation project
creates a multi-sport, multi-activity lit stadium
that features an all-new synthetic turf field that
will meet the NCAA regulations for football,
mens and womens soccer, and mens and
womens lacrosse programs.
State-of-the-art energy efficient lighting will
enable the first outdoor night games in Norwich
athletic history. The 400-meter resilient urethane
running track features 42-inch lanes and inside
track curbing. The stadium experience will also
be enhanced via a new sound system, bleachers,
and press box. A new hospitality plaza will fea-
ture game day concessions and merchandise
sales.
The newly-refurbished WWII M4 Sherman
tank Sabine Sally, the propeller and the anchor
all proudly stand guard over the west end of the
field in the new Monument Plaza.
Thanks to the generosity of alumni, parents
and friends during our Bearing the Torch fund-
raising initiative, we were able to renovate
Sabine Field and bring our facilities for football,
soccer and lacrosse to a new level, said Norwich
President Richard Schneider. This facility will
be used by not only athletes but all students,
throughout the year.
The grand reopening will feature the football
teams home opener against SLU, as well as a
mens and womens soccer doubleheader against
Albertus Magnus starting at 5pm and 7:30pm
respectively.
I am very pleased for our student athletes
that the transformation of Sabine Field is com-
plete and that our teams will now begin to par-
ticipate on this beautiful field, said Norwich
University Director of Athletics Tony Mariano.
I know that the University and the Northfield
community are very excited about being a part
of this historic event on September 14.
The day-long celebration kicks off at 10am
with the rededication ceremony at the Sabine
Field gate. The rededication ceremony will
honor two iconic coaches in NU athletic history
in Joe Sabol and Wallace Wally Baines.
Sabol coached the NU football team for 10
years, compiling a 48-33-1 record from 1965-
1974, while Baines started and was the inaugu-
ral coach for the mens lacrosse and cross coun-
try programs at Norwich. Both men are members
of the Norwich University Hall of Fame.
Starting at 11am, a tailgate event will be held
in the Plumley Armory parking lot that will be
open to the public on a first-come, first-served
basis for parking-space availability.
The grand reopening ceremony will begin at
1pm and will feature a speech by President
Schneider. There will also be a parade of foot-
ball alumni and the current members of the NU
mens and womens soccer, as well as mens and
womens lacrosse teams.
Three local Vermont companies played a
major role in the project, including Engelberth
Construction of Colchester, SD Ireland Company
of Williston, and Bates & Murray Inc. of Barre.
Norwich utilized Vermont-based contractors
for the vast majority of this project, said
Norwich University Chief Administrative
Officer Dave Magida. We want to be a good
corporate citizen and utilize local firms. More
importantly, we have learned over the course of
hundreds of millions of dollars worth of projects
over many years that Vermonters help us com-
plete projects on time and on budget and to
exacting quality standards. Vermonters will
always be the core of our construction teams.

About to be lapped 20 laps from the finish, Kyle Busch took
advantage of a late caution to regroup and charge back to his
fourth NASCAR Camping World Truck Series victory at Bristol
Motor Speedway on Wednesday night. Buschs deciding pass of
Ryan Blaney came on the 195th of 200 laps around the .533-mile
track but he was challenged at the checkered flag by defending
UNOH 200 winner Timothy Peters. The pair of Toyota Tundras
crossed the start-finish stripe literally side-by-side with Peters -
whod held a two-second advantage when the nights fourth cau-
tion waved on lap 179 - crashing into the inside barrier. Buschs
margin of victory was 0.05 seconds. I knew I had it; I just had the
momentum, said Busch. Timothy just tried to throw the Hail
Mary there I guess and wrecked a pretty good race truck. I hated
it for him in doing that. Blaney finished third in a Ford with
Johnny Sauter and Chase Elliott fourth and fifth. Elliott earlier
became the series youngest pole winner at age 17 and led the
races first 62 laps before giving way to Peters. Crafton retained
his championship lead of 47 points over Buescher, the 2012 series
champion. Peters, who led all 204 laps in winning the race a year
ago, appeared to have the race won after dispatching Elliott and
holding off a mid-race challenge from Blaney.
Garage Garble
Mark Martin will drive the No. 14 Stewart-Haas Racing
Chevrolet for the rest of the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series season
-- with the exception of the October 20 race at Talladega -- as
owner/driver Tony Stewart recuperates from injuries suffered in a
Sprint Car accident Aug. 5 in Iowa, SHR announced Monday
afternoon. Martins move to the No. 14 car paves the way for
Brian Vickers to drive the No. 55 Michael Waltrip Racing Toyota
in 12 of the final 13 races, as Vickers prepares for his first full
season with the team in 2014. Austin Dillon, who finished 14th
Sunday at Michigan in his first trip in the No. 14 car, will compete
in the Talladega race in Stewarts absence. Stewart broke the tibia
and fibula in his right leg in the Aug. 5 accident.
Joey Logano in Victory Lane at Michigan -- thats the last thing
Ryan Newman wanted to see. Not that Newman has anything
personal against Logano. Its simply that Newman was loath to see
Logano -- or any other previously winless driver in the top 20 in
points -- notch a victory. Newman, who finished 13th, left
Michigan knowing that his quest to qualify for the Chase for the
NASCAR Sprint Cup had just gotten exponentially more difficult.
After the Aug. 11 race at Watkins Glen, Newman held the 14th
position in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series standings and the
second of two provisional Wild Card spots. After Michigan, hes
15th, with two drivers ahead of him in the race for the last Wild
Card position -- because Martin Truex Jr. fell out of the top 10 on
Sunday, and because Logano won the race, jumped to 13th in
points and injected himself into the Chase picture. That was
another headache in a rough two months for Newman, who got
definite word in July that his contract with Stewart-Haas Racing
would not be renewed. The interesting aspect is that Newman still
controls his own destiny, as far as the Chase is concerned. One
victory in the next three races would make him an odds-on favor-
ite to qualify for NASCARs 10-race playoff. Two wins would
lock him in.
