HUAWEI BSC6000 Base Station Subsystem BSS Feature Description

23.1 Overview
This topic describes the TRX cooperation. When the TRXs in a cell incur a fault, The TRX cooperation can ensure that the cell is functional.

Definition
When some TRXs in a cell are faulty, the cell may not be functional. The TRX cooperation can ensure that the cell is functional. The TRX cooperation is categorized into the following two ways:
l

BCCH TRX cooperation When a TRX carrying the BCCH is faulty, the BSC selects a normal TRX as a new BCCH TRX according to the TRX cooperation algorithm. Thus, the cell can work normally. When the fault of a TRX is rectified, the BSC hands over the BCCH to this TRX.

Baseband FH TRX cooperation When a TRX of the cell in Baseband FH mode is faulty, the BSC changes the mode to be None FH temporarily to prevent the decrease in speech quality.

Purposes
When a TRX carrying the BCCH is faulty, all the services within this cell are interrupted. To ensure the normal running of the cell services, the BSC initiates another TRX in the cell to replace the faulty TRX. When the fault of a TRX is rectified, the BSC switches the BCCH on this TRX. When the TRX where the BCCH of a cell in baseband FH mode is faulty, some speech frames are lost in the conversations where the FH channels are used. Thus, the quality of the call is greatly influenced. To ensure the speech quality of the cell, the BSC initiates the baseband FH TRX cooperation and changes the mode to be none FH. Thus, faults of a few TRXs do not influence the speech quality of the cell. After the faults are rectified, the BSC recovers the FH mode of the cell to be baseband FH. The TRX cooperation detection, the cell traffic handover and cell reinitialization should be performed by the system automatically after the fault occurs. All these processes take several minutes.
NOTE

The TRX cooperation is not triggered in a duration after the cell initialization. The duration is controlled by Aiding Delay Protect Time(min). The default value is 15 minutes.

23.3 Impact
This topic describes the impact of the TRX cooperation on the system performance and other features.

Impact on System Performance

The impacts of the BCCH TRX cooperation on the system performance are as follows:
l

After the BCCH TRX cooperation, the BSC specifies a TRX as the BCCH TRX and the number of available TCHs decreases. Thus, the the cell capacity is reduced. The more the number of faulty TRXs are, the lower the capacity of the cell is. If the TRX carries the PDCH, the PDCH is unavailable after the BCCH TRX cooperation and the decrease of the PS services capacity. If tthe TRX carries the CBCH, the CHCH is unavailable after the BCCH TRX cooperation and the cell broadcast service is stopped. If either of the original TRX carrying the primary BCCH and cooperated TRX does not support the EDGE, both of them do not support the EDGE after the BCCH TRX cooperation. When the cell is a concentric cell and the cooperated TRX is in an overlaid subcell, the coverage of the cell decreases after the TRX cooperation.

The impacts of the baseband FH BCCH TRX cooperation on the system performance are as follows:
l

When the baseband FH TRX cooperation occurs, the BSC changes the FH mode of the cell from Baseband FH to be None FH. The cell does not have the features of diversity interference and anti-attenuation brought by the baseband FH. If the baseband FH mode of the cell is Baseband FH Joined By The TRX Carrying the Primary BCCH and the TRX where the cell BCCH locates is faulty, both the BCCH TRX cooperation and the baseband FH TRX cooperation occur. The BSC changes the FH mode of the cell to be None FH. After all the TRX in the FH and the original TRX carrying the primary BCCH are confirmed to be normal, the baseband FH cooperation changeback occurs. That is, the BSC recoveries the FH mode of the cell to be Baseband FH.

Impact on Other Features

The impacts of the TRX cooperation on the system performance are as follows:

23 TRX Cooperation

The TRX cooperation does not occur in the validation process of reconfigured data, the duration of resources check and the duration of the BTS initialization. If the SDCCH dynamic adjustment, or full-rate/half-rate dynamic adjustment or PDCH dynamic adjustment occurs in the cell, the type of the adjusted channels carried by the related TRX is recovered to be the original type after the TRX cooperation or TRX cooperation changeback.

23.4 Technical Description

The technical description of the TRX cooperation consists of the description of the BCCH TRX cooperation, baseband FH TRX cooperation and TRX cooperation algorithm. 23.4.1 BCCH TRX Cooperation This topic describes the BCCH TRX cooperation. When a BCCH TRX of a cell is unavailable, the BSC initiates another TRX to replace the faulty one to enable the cell to offer services continuousl. When the fault of the original BCCH TRX is recitified, the BSC switches back the BCCH to the original TRX. 23.4.2 Baseband FH TRX Cooperation This topic describes the baseband FH TRX cooperation. The baseband FH TRX cooperation refers to that when the TRX in the FH is faulty and the FH mode of the cell is Baseband FH, the BSC initiates the baseband FH TRX cooperation and changes the FH mode of the cell to be None FH. After the TRX faults are rectified, the BSC recovers the FH mode of the cell to be Baseband FH. 23.4.3 TRX Cooperation Algorithm The BSC uses the TRX cooperation algorithm to select the cooperated TRX in the TRX cooperation.

If the cell meets the requirement of the TRX cooperation, the BSC sends the forced switch request to all the calls in the cell and starts the 10-second timer. If the cell does not meet the requirement of the TRX cooperation, the BSC stops the process of the TRX cooperation.

3. 4.

After all the call in the cell is handed over or the 10-second timer expires, the BSC specifies another TRX as the BCCH TRX in the cell. The BSC initializes the cell, and then delivers the configuration data to the BTS. The BSC delivers the configuration data of the original BCCH TRX to the cooperated TRX and delivers the configuration data of the cooperated TRX to the original BCCH TRX. The cooperated TRX then provides services to the original BCCH TRX.

Description of the BCCH TRX Cooperation Switchback

After the faults of the original BCCH TRX in the cell that the BCCH TRX cooperation occurs are rectified, the BCCH TRX cooperation changeback is performed in the cell. The data in the two TRXs related to the cooperation is adjusted, and the original configuration data of the cell is recovered. The procedure of the BCCH TRX cooperation changeback is similar to that of the BCCH TRX cooperation. The only difference lies in the triggering condition and the cooperation process content. The time of the cooperation changeback can be controlled with parameters. The options include Allowed & Recover Immediately, Allowed & Recover When Check Res and Allowed & Recover Forbidden.

23.4.3 TRX Cooperation Algorithm

The BSC uses the TRX cooperation algorithm to select the cooperated TRX in the TRX cooperation. The TRX cooperation consists of the following three phases:
l l l

Default status Preprocessing status Handling Status

In the TRX cooperation, the BSC uses the following two protection measures to ensure the communication quality of the radio network:
l

Preprocessing protection: aviods the frequent TRX cooperation because of TRX intermittent. Postprocessing protection: provides enough time for the call in the cell where the TRX cooperation will occur.

Checking the Availability Status of Cells

This topic describes how to check the availability status of cell to confirm whether the cells meet the requirement of TRX cooperation. The cell status check is triggered by the one-second task. The 512 cells are checked periodically. In the cell status check, the BSC ignores the cell in the abnormal state and finds the cell meeting the requirements of the TRX cooperation. The cells in abnormal state are as follows:
l l l l l l

TAIDING_EXPT_CELL_NOT_INSTALL AIDING_EXPT_IN_INITIAL_PROCESS AIDING_EXPT_OML_ABNORMAL AIDING_EXPT_DATA_ADJUST_DISABLE AIDING_EXPT_NOT_AIDING_BUTT AIDING_EXPT_INITIAL_PROTECT

After the BSC finds the normal cell, the TRX cooperation process is started.

Checking the TRX Status

This topic describes the TRX status check. The TRX status check indicates to specify the type of the TRX cooperation in the cell according to the TRX status.

Determination Conditions of the BCCH TRX Cooperation

Table 23-5 shows the determination conditions of the BCCH TRX cooperation. The BCCH TRX cooperation and the BCCH TRX cooperation changeback occur only when all the conditions in Table 23-5. are met. Table 23-5 Determination conditions of the BCCH TRX cooperation Determination Conditions of the BCCH TRX Cooperation The TRX Aiding Function Control Switch in the cell is enabled. Determination Conditions of the Baseband FH TRX Cooperation

Table 23-6 shows the determination conditions of the baseband FH TRX cooperation. The baseband FH TRX cooperation and the baseband FH TRX cooperation changeback occur only when all the conditions in Table 23-6. Table 23-6 Determination conditions of the baseband FH TRX cooperation and changeback Determination Conditions of the Baseband FH TRX Cooperation The TRX cooperation in the cell is allowed. The FH mode of the cell is Baseband FH. The baseband FH TRX cooperation does not occur in this cell. That is, all the TRXs in the baseband FH are normal. The status of at least one TRX in the baseband FH is either POWER_OFF, FAILED, NOT_INSTALLED_REA or DEPENDENCY.
NOTE

Determination Conditions of the Baseband FH TRX Cooperation Switchback The TRX cooperation changeback in the cell is allowed. The BSC changes the FH mode of the cell from Baseband FH to be None FH. The status of the original BCCH is ENABLED. The status of all the TRXs in the baseband FH is ENABLED.

When the BCCH TRX cooperation occurs in the cell where the BTS FH occurs, the BSC initiates the baseband FH TRX cooperation forcibly and changes the FH mode of the cell from Baseband FH to be None FH.

After the TRX status check is complete, the TRX cooperation processing is existed if the BSC detects that no TRX cooperation is needed. If the BSC detects that the conditions of the TRX cooperation are meet, the preprocessing timer is started. The duration of the timer is one minute. When the preprocessing timer expires, the BSC starts the processing of TRX cooperation preprocessing. The BSC then checks the TRX status again to avoid the frequent TRX cooperation because of TRX intermittence. If the BCCH TRX cooperation is necessary after the check, the BSC starts the process to search the cooperated TRX.

Preprocessing the TRX Cooperation

This topic describes the preprocessing of the TRX cooperation. The process of the TRX cooperation preprocessing consists of two phrases: searching for the cooperated TRX and Postprocessing the TRX cooperation.

Searching for the Cooperated TRX

Before starting the BCCH TRX cooperation, the BSC should select a normal TRX as the candidate cooperated TRX in the cell. In the selection, configuration of the TRX should be considered. The following TRXs cannot be selected as the candidate cooperated TRX:

The BSC puts all the available TRXs in the cell into the candidate TRXs queue, and then orders them according to priorities. The TRX with the highest priority is selected as the BCCH cooperated TRX. The priorities are determined as follows: Each TRX is assigned with a byte. The byte is set to OXFF originally. Each bit indicates whether the related function is supported. When certain condition is met, this bit is set to 0. The smaller the value is, the higher the priority level is. Figure 23-1 lists the priority level determination method of the candidate TRX. In the TRX cooperation, the cell should be initialized. The calls in this cell should be handed over to the other cells in order not to influence the speech quality. After the TRX cooperation preprocessing, the BSC initiates the postprocess timer with the duration of 10 seconds. Thus, all the calls in this cell have enough time to be handed over.

Postprocessing the TRX Cooperation

After the postprocessing timer expires, the BSC starts the postprocessing. The TRX cooperation postprocessing includes the following:
l

Modifying the dynamic variables The system records the number of the cooperated TRXs, the original and the current BCCH TRXs. The cooperated TRX and the original BCCH TRX map with each other. When the current BCCH TRX returns to the original configuration, the system delivers the configuration information to the related TRXs according to the mapping rule during the cell initialization.

Sending alarms The alarms consists of 401 BCCH Mutual Aid in a Cell, 402 Switchback after BCCH Mutual Aid in a Cell, 409 Cell BCCH Aiding to IUO_INN TRX, 403 Baseband FH Mutual Aid in a Cell and 404 Switchback after Baseband FH Mutual Aid in a Cell.

Request the reinitialization of the cell The cell should be reinitialized in both the BCCH TRX cooperation and the baseband FH TRX cooperation. In the cell initialization of the BCCH TRX cooperation, all the configurations of the original BCCH TRX and the cooperated TRX, except the attributes about whether support the AMR and the transmit and receive mode of the RF, exchange with each other.
