ARMY SCHOLARSHIP 1,500 pa. (for a maximum of 2 years) The Army Scholarship offers financial assistance towards the cost of the last two years schooling. In addition, Army Scholars are expected to subsequently study for a first degree and to apply for an Undergraduate Bursary, the latter subject to final approval by the Army Undergraduates Awards Board. UNDERGRADUATE BURSARY 1,000 p.a. (plus 3,000 on commissioning) This annual allowance is in addition to any grants or fees from education authorities and councils. The Bursary holders earnings from the University Officers Training Corps are additional to this. TECHNICAL BURSARIES 4,000 p.a. Technical Bursaries are awarded to graduates of Welbeck, The Defence Sixth Form College, for the duration of their degree training, as part of the Defence Technical Undergraduate Scheme. Earnings from membership of University Support Units, averaging 1,500 pa, are additional to this. MEDICAL/DENTAL CADETSHIPS 14,983 on appointment rising to 18,671 after two years, with Lieutenants (PRMP) on appointment starting at 40,728, with Captains on appointment 53,803 and Majors (GP) on appointment 96,262. The salaries of these professionally qualified officers will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.

UNIVERSITY OFFICERS TRAINING CORPS University Officers Training Corps salaries are as follows: Officer Cadet 38.99 per day, Officer Cadet MOD2 46.26 per day and Second Lieutenant (TA) 62.69 per day. A bounty of 147, rising after 1 year to 171 and after 2 years to 207, is granted annually upon satisfactory completion of 15 days annual camp and 15 training periods of two hours duration plus recruit and annual personal weapons tests. PROFESSIONALLY QUALIFIED OFFICERS Professionally Qualified Officers, such as doctors, dentists, chaplains, nurses, physiotherapists, pharmacists, lawyers and vets are commissioned as Lieutenants or above depending on their experience or qualifications. UNIFORM ALLOWANCE A uniform allowance is payable on commissioning. The amount is dependent on the regiment or corps into which a candidate is commissioned and the type of commission held. The amount is paid as a tax-free lump sum. Thereafter, an income tax allowance is given by the Inland Revenue to cover upkeep. FOOD AND ACCOMODATION CHARGES Charges are raised for food and accommodation provided by the Army. The present accommodation charges are up to 5.38 per day for Captains and below and up to 6.62 for Majors and above. The daily food charge is 4.43. Married officers living in married quarters will pay a monthly accommodation charge of between 402 and 829, depending on their rank and the quarters size. COUNCIL TAX All personnel are responsible for paying Council Tax in accordance with current legislation. For those living in service accommodation, a contribution towards Council Tax is charged within their overall accommodation charges. ALLOWANCES Certain allowances are payable. For example a local overseas allowance is payable to offset the extra costs of living overseas. Similarly, both single and married personnel might be eligible for a separation allowance when serving away from duty stations for periods of 10 days or more. ADDITIONAL PAY Certain specialist roles (e.g. pilots, parachutists, divers and Special Forces) receive additional pay. Personnel permanently stationed in Northern Ireland receive a residence supplement currently worth 7.36 per day. RETIRED PAY All officers who are in full receipt of full-time pay are members of the non-contributory Armed Forces Pension Scheme. All pensions are paid at age 65 provided they have served at least 2 years. In addition to this preserved pension, officers are eligible for Early Departure Payments and a tax free lump sum after completing 18 years service and having reached age 40. Those officers serving until their 55th birthday will receive a further tax free lump sum and their pension when they retire.
