They fought together as brothers-in-

arms. They died together and now they
sleep side by side. To them we have a
solemn obligation. ~ Admiral Chester W.
Nimitz
The National World War II (WW II) me-
morial in Washington, D.C., opened to the
public on April 29, 2004. Unfortunately,
the majority of the surviving veterans for
whom this memorial was dedicated were
incapable of visiting the site due to age,
illness, and monetary constraints. Physi-
cian assistant and retired Air Force Cap-
tain, Earl Morse, wanted to honor veterans
and make it possible for them to visit the
WW II memorial and other memorials in
Washington. Morse, who was also a pri-
vate pilot, began fying veterans to Wash-
ington at his own expense. Other private
pilots got onboard and also began donat-
ing their planes and expertise. In 2005,
even more people became interested
in helping Morse achieve his mission of
transporting veterans to Washington
free of charge, and thus the Honor Flight
Network program offcially came into be-
ing. In 2006, commercial airlines began to
be used exclusively for transporting the
veterans. To date, thousands of veterans,
mostly those who served in WWII or Ko-
rea, have now benefted from the Honor
Flight program.
Huron resident, Jack Cook, had never
heard of the Honor Flight program. One
day while Jack was at the Donut Shop
for his regular morning round of conver-
sation, a school bus driver, who is also a
regular, came in with a substitute driver.
The substitute explained the premise of
the Honor Flight program to Jack and of-
fered him an application. Jack qualifed
for the program because he was a WW II
veteran. At the tender age of 17, Jack had
volunteered for military service, and from
1944 until 1946, he served as a radar op-
erator on a Navy aircraft carrier. Jack was
at sea for 14 months straight in the Pacifc
Ocean. The ship upon which Jack served
was used solely for training purposes;
therefore, Jack did not see any fghting.
Nonetheless, he served his country well
during a very diffcult time in our his-
tory. Jack decided to fll out the Honor
Flight application, but he doubted that
he would ever be able to take advantage
of the program since the typical waiting
period is one year. To his great surprise,
Jack received a call at the beginning of
August asking him whether he would be
available to travel to Washington on Au-
gust 21. Apparently, a veteran who had
planned to travel on that date had be-
come ill and his spot was available. Jack
jumped at the opportunity.
On the morning of August 21, Jack ar-
rived at the Cleveland airport at 4:30 AM.
There he met the other veterans and
those volunteers who, at their own ex-
pense, would serve as the veterans guard-
ians for the day. The group was on a very
tight schedule upon arriving in Washing-
ton. They went to 11 different memorials
including the WW II memorial and Arling-
ton National Cemetery and returned to
Cleveland at 11:00 PM. The cost of the
entire trip was covered by Honor Flight.
Jack, who at 86, was the youngest of the
group of veterans, was moved to the point
of tears by the experience. Everything
was so memorable. I got so wrapped up
in this thing because I thought nobody
cared anymore about the people like
me or the people that died. stated Jack.
Further he exclaimed, This was prob-
ably one of the most rewarding things
that Ive ever been involved with. I could
talk for 100 days and not tell you about
everything that I saw and everything I
felt. Jack adamantly stated that it should
be mandatory for all students to visit the
memorials in Washington so the students
could have a better understanding of the
history of their country and the sacrifces
that were made on their behalf.
Though Jack has endured some hard-
ships, he still enjoys life. His new motto is
If I can make you smile, my life is worth-
while. Your life and the lives of those
who sacrifced much for our country are
truly worthwhile. Thank you for your ser-
vice.

Huron Resident Takes Honor Flight
By Lisa yako
A variety of studies have shown that participating in
leisure activities contributes to the physical and mental
health and overall life satisfaction of people of all ages.
Yet, frequently it is not until retirement that one has the
time and resources to fully pursue a hobby. Such is the
case for Huron resident, Ralph Boyer.
In 1997, Ralph decided to offcially retire from his
teaching job. As is often the case, Ralphs
friends, family, and co-workers wanted
to commemorate his retirement
by giving him a special gift.
Ralphs childhood love of
trains had recently been
rekindled when his wife,
Barb, purchased a train
set for him. So, Ralph
suggested that they
give him components
to create what would
become his full-time
hobby, a garden railroad.
While attending a garden
show at the IX Center in
Cleveland soon after retire-
ment, Ralph and Barb became
acquainted with members of the
Northern Ohio Garden Railroad Soci-
ety (NOGRS). After Ralph laid the required
electrical lines underground, some NOGRS members
came to Huron and helped Ralph transform his front
yard into a garden railroad. This was just the beginning
of the Boyers involvement with the NOGRS.
Since the early days of the Boyers garden railroad,
much has changed and much has been added. The
railroad garden now consumes the Boyers entire front
yard. Ralph estimates that they have laid about 600 feet
of track, constructed over 150 buildings, and collected
over 1,000 fgures that enhance the display. Ralph and
Barb keep quite busy with their unique garden. The
display is set-up by mid-June and remains in place until
the end of September. During this time, the Boyers wel-
come about 200 visitors to their garden per year. Most
visitors learn about the garden through word of mouth.
As the weather turns cold, Ralph and Barb carefully pack
up the components of each display while
leaving the track in place. The winter
months are spent updating and
painting the buildings and fg-
ures and fnding new pieces
that might add a new di-
mension to the displays.
Despite all of the hard
work and the monetary
investment that the
Boyers have made in
their garden railroad,
they would not change
a thing. Both Barb and
Ralph get great pleasure
from watching visitors en-
joy their gardens. We have
seen men cry because of the
memories this brings back. Little
kids cry because they dont want to
leave. stated Barb. Ralph added I am lucky
to be here, and if I can afford to share my experience and
people get enjoyment, I appreciate that.
The Boyers want more people to experience their rail-
road gardens, so they will be hosting an Open House
on Saturday, August 31 and Sunday, September 1 from
noon until 4:00 PM. The Boyers live at 106 Findlay Av-
enue. Take some time to stroll around these unique
gardens, relive childhood memories, or make some
new memories with your children. All in all, you will be
amazed at the time and effort that the Boyers have put
into their gardens not only for their own pleasure, but
for that of others as well.

Woodlands Intermediate
School was recently featured
in the NASA Glenn Research
Center Educational Programs
Offce Educators E-Blast.
Mrs. Leah LaCrosse and her
ffth grade scientists were
featured in the NASA in the
Classroom section of the
quarterly NASA Newsletter
for having participated in nu-
merous hands-on science ac-
tivities inspired by NASA. This
is the frst E-blast (emailed
newsletter) sent out by NASA.
I cannot tell you how much
NASA Glenn professional
development outreach pro-
gram has meant to me and
my students. Each year, they
have inspired me to bring
fun, hands-on science to the
classroom, stated Mrs. Leah
LaCrosse, 5th grade Science
teacher. Several years ago La-
Crosse signed up to be noti-
fed of any training conducted at NASA Glenn Research
Center and at that time she was introduced to Ms. Mon-
ica Boyd, the Educational Resource Center Coordinator,
LaCrosse explained. Everyone should have a Monica on
their resource list.
Boyd has been extremely instrumental in helping La-
Crosse get connected to online resources from NASA
such as webinars, videos and signing out moon samples
as well as she has assisted in fnding funding for the
LEGO Mindstorm Robots. In addition, LaCrosse has been
involved in several training programs at different NASA
facilities over the years. Having specialized training in
the Earth Surface (volcano & core samples), Rockets, En-
gineering Design (2 days this past summer), the Solar
System and the LEGO Mindstorm training, LaCrosse has
been very involved in the programs. The relationship
with NASA has also led to students Skyping with NASA
scientists, explained LaCrosse. Really cool opportunities
have evolved from our relationship, she continued. I
would recommend hooking up with NASA!
In addition to the professional development outreach
program, LaCrosses involvement with NASA has led to
many academic opportunities for the students through
the Casis Education Fellows Program. As part of this pro-
gram, LaCrosse is able to learn frsthand and communi-
cate research being conducted aboard the International
Space Station (ISS). Members of the Casis Fellows Pro-
gram are able to pilot test materials and serve as focus
groups during missions. Later this winter LaCrosse and
her young scientists will have the opportunity to virtu-
ally study Ants in Space aboard the ISS.
With the start of a new school year the 5th grade stu-
dents are very fortunate to have these hands-on scien-
tifc experiences in the classroom. Another one of Mrs.
LaCrosses goals for this year is to focus locally on the
sciences within the Huron community.

Last Friday night the Huron Tiger football squad host-
ed the young men from Bucyrus High School for both
teams fnal tune-up of the year. The Tiger offense, led
by senior standout Cody Thompson, seemed to score at
will with its high octane, passing offense. However, the
Tigers have a tough non-conference schedule facing
them this year. Their season starts Friday with hard hit-
ting Elyria Catholic on the road, followed by the always
tough Bellevue Redmen.
Anyone for Some Football?
The Huron High School Cross Coun-
try team competed in their frst meet of
the season this past Saturday. All of the
teams hard work and focus was evident
as they ran at The Tiger Classic, hosted by
Seneca East High School.
The Womens Team placed 4th overall,
with two runners receiving awards to
kick off the fall racing season. Junior Madi
Mize led the way fearlessly, snagging 2nd
place overall in the womens race with
a PR of 20:06 minutes! Freshman Sarah
Neibler earned a medal for 25th place
with a time of 22:34, and her classmate
Jenna Burrier was close behind in 32nd
in 22:48. Junior Sammy Hebert was 4th
in for the Tigers, followed by Senior Liz
Delamatre, Sophomore Hannah Black-
well, and Junior Alison Litz. The Womens
JV Open Race was full of inspiring perfor-
mances from frst time 5K racers! First in
for the Tigers was Freshman Cassandra
Dircks, followed by some teamwork rac-
ing by Senior Cassidy Boger and Fresh-
man Maddie Portteus. Freshmen Brooke
Roeder and Kate Will also completed
their frst ever 5K race at the high school
level. All represented themselves and
their school well!
The Mens Team placed 11th out of 21
teams in the meet, with the top two run-
ners being recognized by awards. The
Tigers were led by Senior Kevin Tomczyk,
who cruised in to fnish 15th for the Ti-
gers in 17:13. Senior Ryan VanCauwen-
berg completed his frst Varsity 5K in
17:39, placing 22nd, followed by Senior
Brennan Cockrell, who ran an amazing
race and fnished in 18:34. Junior Sean
Martin came in 84th with a time of 19:57,
and Sophomore Jacob Fries ran his PR of
21:01. Junior Nick Lachowyn and Sopho-
more Nick Swope rounded out the top 7,
completing their frst Varsity 5K. In the
JV Open race, Elijah Hart showed what it
means to never give up, as he fnished his
frst 5K, as well. The mens team has their
sights set high this season!
The Tigers will race at the Ashland Invite
this Saturday. For more details, see the
Huron Tigers Cross Country Facebook
page.
Huron Cross Country Runs First Meet of the Season
Huron loves its volleyball and another
season started this weekend in typi-
cal Don Wood fashion...the young team
faced off against one of the largest and
most consistent powers in Ohio. And
while the Lady Tigers fell 15-25, 25-21,24-
26,25-23,13-15, there will be valuable les-
sons taken away that will turn this loss
into a win.
Kat Ferrell left a huge hole in the front
line to fll when she departed for Appa-
lachian State, but there will be new stars
to cheer on. Juniors Hadley Sterett and
Hannah Cantrill (14 & 13 kills respec-
tively) have matured into ferce attackers.
Cantrill also served up four aces. On de-
fense, seniors Piper Miedema (5) and Me-
gan McCarthy (4) led the team in blocks.
Six young women hit double fgures
in digs including Alli Grendow, Hadley
Sterett, Elain Hemker, Gabriella Wood, R.
Strickland, and Hannah Cantrill (with 19).
Two fresh faced freshmen to watch are
Alli Grendow and Gabriella Wood. They
led the team in assists 20 and 21 a piece.
Come out and support this young team
as it develops into another State con-
tender.
At Left: Junior Hadley Sterret will help lead
the Tiger attack this year.

A group of ten EHOVE students joined more than high school students and advisors from
high schools throughout Ohio at Hocking College from July 15-19 for the SkillsUSA Summer
Leadership Conference. Students received the necessary training to lead their local chapter
of SkillsUSA for the year with activities including a creed challenge, leadership sessions, team
building, community service project and competitions. Daily activities included: a Creed
Challenge, Leadership Sessions, Team-Building Course, Community Service Project and Com-
petitions.Throughout the week, students worked to earn their Statesman Award. This award
is to recognize team members who have demonstrated leadership skills and mastered cer-
tain requirements in leadership training. Those earning the award from EHOVE including the
following students and instructors:

In order to earn the Statesmans Award, students participated in SkillsUSA leadership and
competitive events sponsored in part by the Ohio Army National Guard and Hocking Col-
lege. The students joined the Glouster Volunteers, a group of residents of this once-thriving
coal-mining town, who are working to spruce up the community and literally paint the town.
The students and instructors continued their work from last year by painting over 15 homes
through a large geographic area. Founder Jim Cotter, 81, started the painting project to al-
leviate his grief following the death of his wife last year. He wanted to occupy his mind and
his time by working to improve his community. Students
also worked on community service projects like landscap-
ing, light construction, cleanups and painting projects spon-
sored in part by Toolbox for Education grants from Lowes
Charitable and Educational Foundation. SkillsUSA is a part-
nership of students, teachers and industry working together
to ensure America has a skilled workforce. The Ohio chapter
provides its 31,500+ career-technical education members,
which includes many EHOVE students, the opportunity to
participate in local, regional, state and national competitive
events, and encourages students to give back to the com-
munity through various community service activities.

Senior citizens and EHOVE. They make a good pair.
For the last ten years or so, local seniors have enjoyed
EHOVEs Senior Citizen Fall Festival. Its a good deal and
a good time. EHOVE Ambassadors host the event, stu-
dents in the Color Guard open the event, Culinary Arts
students plan, prepare and serve a tasty lunch, local mu-
sicians provide the entertainment, and everyone leaves
with a door prize or small memento of the day.
This year, EHOVEs Senior Citizen Fall Festival is
Wednesday, September 19
and Thursday, September
20 from 11 am-12:30 pm in
F Building on EHOVEs cam-
pus at 316 W. Mason Road.
Tickets are $5 per person,
must be purchased in ad-
vance, and are good only
for one of the event dates
chosen by the purchaser in
advance.
Interested seniors should
buy tickets early. A limited
number are available and
will only be sold until Sep-
tember 14, unless they are
sold out earlier. More infor-
mation and tickets are avail-
able by contacting Kathy
Schenk at (419) 627-9665
x270 or (419) 499-4663
x270.
EHOVE Career Center is a
leading career tech school
in Milan Township. This high
school and adult education
facility draws students from
a variety of locales, and serves multiple school districts
in Erie, Huron and Ottawa Counties. Students are given
the opportunity to take challenging academic classes in
a customized and relevant curriculum, and gain hands-
on training and real world experience to prepare them
for college, a specifc career, or the military. For more in-
formation, go to www.EHOVE.net or call 419-499-4663
x232.
