The Danger of Making the Wrong Choice

By Joe Lightfoot, Pastor of Adult Ministries
A couple had been debating the purchase of a new auto for weeks. He wanted a new truck. She wanted a fast little sports-like car so
she could zip through traffic around town. He would probably have settled for any beat up old truck, but everything she seemed to like
was way out of their price range.
Finally she said, “Listen, I want something that goes from 0 to 200 in 4 seconds or less and my birthday is coming up, so you can
just surprise me.” For her birthday, he bought her a brand new bathroom scale. He clearly made the wrong choice!
Last Sunday Pastor Mike taught that, based on our commitment to Jesus and the guidance we receive from the Bible, our character
is transformed through the choices we make. This is true in the area of moral purity and the other four areas in the discipleship model.
From the letter to the Church at Ephesus (Ephesians 4:17–5:21), 16 positive choices (“Go” Commands) and 13
prohibitions (“Stop” Commands) were identified. These choices are:

Verse “Go” Commands “Stop” Commands

4:17 live no longer as the ungodly do
22 throw off your old evil nature and your former way of life
23 spiritually renew your thoughts and attitudes
24 display a new nature because you are a new person
25 be a truth-teller put away all falsehood
26 don’t sin by letting anger gain control over you
28 use your hands for honest work stop stealing
28 then give generously to others in need
29 let everything you say be good and helpful don’t use foul or abusive language
30 don’t grieve the Holy Spirit b y the way you live
31 get rid of all bitterness, rage, anger, harsh words, and slander, as well as all
types of malicious behavior
32 be kind to each other, tenderhearted, forgiving one another
5:1 follow God’s example in everything you do
2 live a life filled with love for others, following the example of Christ
3 let there be no sexual immorality, impurity, or greed among you
4 express your thankfulness to God do away with obscene stories, foolish talk, and coarse jokes
11 expose worthless deeds of evil and darkness take no part in worthless deeds of evil and darkness
15 be careful to live as a wise person do not live as a fool
16 make the most of every opportunity for doing good
17 try to understand what the Lord wants you to do don’t act thoughtlessly
18 be filled and controlled by the Holy Spirit don’t be drunk with wine
The challenge is to add each of these commands, these habits, these choices to the content of our character as we continue on the
pathway to growing in the image of Jesus.
However, the journey does not stop here. As we continue down this road of spiritual transformation we see that these choices, these
character qualities are not lived out in isolation. For example, this morning we look at how we live these choices out in relationship to
others, in our family and in the family of God. This is the next step on the pathway to spiritual growth.

Planes, Trains, (buses) and Automobiles
By John Porter, Director of Missions and Local Outreach
During the last 2 weeks, after 40+
hours on planes, 14 hours on trains, 10
hours on buses, and 40 hours in cars, I
experienced a small part of life in India
and what God is doing there. The first
week I was able to visit the work of Mis-
sion India in Hyderabad, Kolkatta and Delhi. In each
of these major cities they are involved in three ways:
1. Adult Literacy programs 2. Church Planters (12 of whom
we supported through their training time several years ago)
3. Children’s Bible Clubs (we support 1200 children a year).
Food was spicy with lots of rice; temps were in the 70s–80s;
people everywhere; and the traffic was crazy.
The second week I went up north to the foothills of the
Himalayas in the Garhwal region. I met with two of our
families in Mussorie and saw the work they are involved with
in ministering to unreached people groups. I was also able to
visit our national church planters in the mountain village of
Pratap Nagar. They are from Nagaland. More rice, less spicy;
temps were 30s–50s; and mountain driving was even worse!
God is doing a work through FFC’s financial and prayer
support of the work in this area. Next week I will have more
details about our national church planter, Nagaland, and how
YOU can be a part of this exciting ministry.
