This manual gives you a clear indication of the standards we expect from our coaches when delivering in the UK or overseas. We want to deliver a recognisable & consistent MUSS experience for all participants whilst also appreciating and embracing the cultural differences of the children and local community. As part of Manchester United Soccer School, we can promise you a great experience. Whilst on the road you will have support from your team, your coordinator and the HQ back in Manchester. We look forward to working with you and hope that together we can enjoy a positive and productive relationship. Best wishes Manchester United Soccer Schools
th

Message from Sir Alex Ferguson At Manchester United we place great emphasis on developing young players and I am proud to continue to play a part in this. It has been part of the tradition of the club since the days of Sir Matt Busby and is something we remain very much focused on today, whether bringing players through the Academy or coaching young players at our soccer schools. For 2008 Manchester United Soccer Schools have developed a programme which is focused on all the positive aspects of the game; it will be exciting, challenging and great fun. Soccer Schools aim is for young players to enjoy themselves, make new friends and develop as footballers.

PHILOSOPHY
MUSS will reflect the commitment of MUFC towards youth development, using important moments from the clubs history and past and present players to offer inspirational and aspirational activity at all times.

HONOUR THE CLUB

ENVIRONMENT MUSS courses will create a safe, open and positive learning environment. PROGRAM DELIVERED All activity is directed to the developmental age of the participant. Programs will
be challenging but achievable, guaranteeing that each child leaves our course with a raised self esteem and most importantly experienced fun and enjoyment.

All MUSS courses will create opportunities for players to become active learners, giving them ownership of their problem solving and decision making processes.

ACTIVE LEARNING

PARTNERSHIPS MUSS will actively seek to create a partnership with parents, coaches, clubs and
organisations, explaining and communicating our objectives clearly where ever the opportunity arises.

METHODOLOGY
MUSS will use MUFC properties to make courses authentic eg branding, player imagery, history of club, giveaways, club facilities and coachs kit. Staff will receive written documents that will set out the delivery standards of MUSS, either project led .e.g Player Development Course, or procedure led eg Child Protection. All staff will be national Football Association qualified and also have attended specific MUSS in-house training. All staff will be informed about MUSS core values and philosophy. On all courses we will endeavour to have a maximum of 16 players per group and will always have a course coordinator to manage the event. Each course will be recognisable as a Manchester United Soccer School through the environment created, activity delivered and impact left on participants and parents. We will always look to incorporate the use of innovative coaching equipment, enhancing the activity delivered. MUSS will always look to educate the holistic child, to develop this aspect we will use the MUSS Code of Conduct. All courses lead back to Old Trafford, Manchester. For the Player Development Courses, Residential and International Projects, one player from each course will win through to the World Skills Final by taking part in the skills challenges. For the Club Development Courses 5 players from each club will be invited to play on the pitch at Old Trafford at the end of the season.

MUSS DEVELOPMENT MODEL

TECHNICAL
Through the delivery of the 6 specific tricks and turns, players learn to dominate 1v1 situations and be confident with the ball at their feet. Players will also be taught the fundamental techniques of passing long and short, receiving and control techniques, finishing, shooting and heading.

TACTICAL
Enhance the players understanding of why, when and where they use these techniques in small sided games leading up to 11 v11 principles with the directive of changing pace, direction and play being ever present. All activity to be delivered relating to the developmental age of the players

PHYSICAL
Players will learn how to train their bodies specifically to the demands of the game. Speed, strength, suppleness, stamina and skill will be developed to allow players to achieve their optimum level of performance. Players will also learn how fuelling and preparing their bodies off the field will give them the best chance on it!

MENTAL
Developing a winning mentality requires strong character and a positive attitude. Through the implementation of Self talk, goal setting and focus refocus this will be addressed in the dressing room, on the pitch and be constantly evident throughout the courses. By redefining winning well show players how to achieve individual success.

SOCIAL
Our courses are a great opportunity for children to develop their social skills. Implementation will be integral to each course with elements of our Code of Conduct encouraged in dressing room briefs and de-briefs as well as coaching sessions.

POSITIVE LEARNING ENVIRONMENT

Our courses are recognised around the world for the unique, positive atmosphere that allows the players to enjoy developing and playing by feeling relaxed, involved and inspired. Our

staff create this environment.

SAFE AND SECURE ENVIRONMENT

The safety and welfare of the kids is paramount. Once this is achieved we can then create the positive learning environment. All staff members must familiarise themselves with the MUSS Child Protection Policy prior to working on any projects.

PLANNING AND PREPARATION

Be inventive and imaginative in your planning and challenge yourself as well as the players to try new sessions and experiment. Use MUSS equipment wherever possible. NUTRITION & HYDRATION

Being serious about competing and winning, involves looking after your diet. If you want plenty of energy during training and to feel strong until the end of matches, then one of the important things to do is: eat the right foods the day before the match.

Fuel Tank
Like a car, which needs fuel (petrol, diesel or gas) and has a fuel tank, which needs to be filled, our body is the same. When a car runs out of fuel it stops. When our muscles run out of fuel they feel very heavy, rather like lead weights and we feel it is very difficult to run.

Carbs are Our Fuel

Our main fuel is Carbohydrate. This is stored inside our muscles. You can fill a car fuel tank in a couple of minutes. To fill our muscle fuel tank, takes about 24 hours. This is because we first have to eat the food which contains carbohydrate, then it has to be broken down (or digested) in the stomach. Next, it has to absorbed into the blood (through the small intestines), then it is transported to the muscles in the blood. Once there it fills the muscle fuel tanks. We can only do this slowly, which is why it can take 24 hours to fill the bodys tank.

Regular Eating
If you want to start a match or comp with a full carbohydrate fuel tank, then regular eating of carbohydrate foods every 2 or 3 hours the day before is the way to do it. Breakfast: Fruit juice. Toast, tea cake, crumpets or muffins and jam. Drink. Snack: Banana. Drink. Lunch: Soup and Sandwich, yoghurt, apple. Drink. Evening Meal: Rice or potatoes or pasta, chicken in sauce, 2 vegetables. Drink. Supper: Bowl of Cereal with chopped bananas and apricots or dried fruit mix.

Snacks and Packed Lunch Ideas

Sandwiches or bread rolls with fillings: Tuna, lean beef, lean ham, chicken, eggs, marmite, vegemite, cottage cheese, banana and jam sandwich. Dressings: chutney, sweet pickle, piccalilli, beetroot, salsa sauce, fat free thousand island, ketchup, brown sauce. Any salad or raw vegetables in a little tub. Beans or spaghetti on toast. Pizza slices. Crumpets and jam. Potato cakes and vegemite. Pasta or rice salad in a little tub. Fruit or chopped fresh fruit in a tub. Fruit in syrup. Raisins. Sultanas. Dried fruit mix. Malt loaf. Currant bread. Currant buns. Scones. Banana loaf. Bagels. Jaffa cakes. Fig biscuits, Garibaldi biscuits. Muesli bars. Yoghurt. Rice pudding pot. Jellypot. Custard pot. Drinks: Fruit juice, milk or flavoured milk, cordial, water.

Hot meal Suggestions

Soup, lean chicken or beef casseroles or stew, all with bread. Spaghetti bolognese. Chicken in barbeque sauce. Chicken curry. Tuna pasta casserole. Fish fingers, mash peas and beans. Fish and potato pie. Shepherds pie. Gammon steaks. Fish in sauce. Sweet and sour chicken. Chicken and vegetable risotto. Pork steaks in honey and chilli sauce. Chicken in black bean sauce. Deserts: Banana and custard. Fruit crumble, fruit pancakes, sponge puddings. Yoghurt. Ice cream, sorbet, rice pudding, custard, jelly.

Pre-Event Meal
This meal should be easily digested foods, which you know do not lie heavy on your stomach and help to keep the blood levels of carbohydrate high. E.g. Soup, bread, potatoes, low fat pasta meals (not creamy or cheesy), baked beans, spaghetti on toast, vegetables, salad, lean meat, skinless chicken, grilled fish, fruit and yoghurt, rice pudding, breakfast cereals, toast & jam. Eating the meal 3 hours before performing seems most acceptable.

Bodyfat
If you want to reduce your bodyfat then you must still eat a high carbohydrate diet to provide the energy for exercise but reduce your intake of foods which contain fat and oil. These include cheese, pastry, sausage, burgers, peanuts, crisps, butter, margarine, certain chocolate and certain biscuits. Nutrient Carbohydrates Protein Fat Vitamins and minerals Water Amount to Eat High Normal Normal to Low High High Foods bread, rice, boiled, baked or mashed potatoes, pasta, noodles, breakfast cereals, oven chips, baked beans, deep pan pizza, cous cous, noodles. potato cakes, crumpets, iced fingers, lean meat, chicken, turkey, gammon, fish, beans, eggs, milk, nuts fried foods, mayonnaise, cheese, sausages, burgers, pastry, crisps, butter, margarine. fruit, vegetables, salads water, fruit juice, cordials, low fat flavoured milk, fruit, vegetables.

MENTAL
Developing a winning mentality requires strong character and a positive attitude. Through the implementation of SELF TALK, GOAL SETTING and FOCUS - REFOCUS this will be addressed in the dressing room, on the pitch and be constantly evident throughout the courses.

Self Talk

On and off the field, encourage players to talk positively to themselves to overcome challenges. Encourage self belief and a can do culture that will help create the positive learning environment Fill their heads with positive suggestions I can do this, I will do this Im going to get better Im enjoying this This is going to make me better

Focus refocus
Encourage players to focus on a task through to a conclusion and success. You can assist with this by making all your practices: challenging age specific engaging so that they are pre occupied with task at hand rather than anything else. You may also need to change practices regularly, especially with younger players to keep them at this state of focus; each new challenge requires new focus. Techniques to use Set specific targets/ goals. Shooting practice.Looking to achieve 60% success rate but with 100% accuracy levels or get your own players to set their own targets, particularly as you develop your relationship with them. Using Routine. This is why we have tried to introduce rituals, particularly the start and end of session one. We are modelling top performers that will all have own routines before they perform. Using Trigger Words as concentration cues. Keeper away time hold it get tight You will notice that many of these trigger words refer to defensive situations where a lack of concentration could prove costly. If you make your players aware that you are working on focusing with them you might make up your own trigger word to get them working with you. Mental Practice Get your players to mentally rehearse the task that you have asked them to do. Get them to work through the practice using their senses how does it look, sound, feel. Simulation Training Build the picture so that the practice situation is the same as the game situation. When you are playing in the game situation you could even set a scenario, your team is 1-0 down with fifteen minutes to play in a cup game, how do you play, does it change if it is a league game. This area is probably best practiced with the older players you might have.

Goal setting
For the players in your group to have a more fulfilling time the use of goal setting is a great tool. You probably already indirectly use this technique, but maybe by being more specific, it will also help you develop your own coaching. How to implement Introduce the topic at your main briefing with the group. Inform them that you will be setting goals at the beginning of each session, but also encourage them to set their own goals for the week. Set one target on the field and one off the field. The goals on the field should be: Behaviourally measurable Challenging but achievable Short range that can be developed into long term, Performance/process goals rather than outcome goals, Positive as opposed to negative goals. Off the field it might be a goal to make 5 new friends or talk to 3 people from a different country.

Before thinking about how to implement the psychological elements within your sessions, please read the Football Psychology notes in the Coach Notes section which will give you more background knowledge on the benefits to the children and crucially what it means for your planning. Most coaches already implement some aspects but we are just trying to introduce children to the benefits of staying positive and developing a strong character. .

Dressing Room Zone

The coach can brief and debrief the players on the relevant session. This is also when the coach can bring in the mental and social elements, create banter and deliver ice breakers eg the name game. Everybody must shake hands before and after each session Choose one MENTAL and SOCIAL element per day and focus on it through out the day in your dressing room time and out on the pitch

SOCIAL
Our courses are a great opportunity for children to develop their social skills. Implementation will be integral to each course with elements of our Code of Conduct encouraged in dressing room briefs and de-briefs as well as coaching sessions.

CODE OF CONDUCT
Attitude Always motivate yourself to give your best Behaviour Lead by example, be the best person you can Communication Listen to you parents, teachers and coaches. Always keep an open mind and ask questions. Discipline Be prepared and be punctual. Respect the people, equipment and place here you play Enthusiasm Give your best at all times and encourage others Fair Play Learn to win and lose with the same degree of dignity.

Once anybody has experienced an MUSS activity they then become part of THE MANCHESTER UNITED FAMILY. Goals are always team efforts. Encourage your players to celebrate goals as a team Encourage all players to watch United games at every opportunity and when they score they should feel part of that celebration.

DRIBBLING/TURNING

EQUIPMENT 8 Mannequins, cones, ball From the start line mark out 2m, go out to the side for 2m and place the mannequin down and go back to the centre, step forward 2m and then out to the other side 2m and place another mannequin. Follow this for mannequins 3 and 4. The running with the ball distance is the age specific element (see diagram) To mark the next mannequin out start from the end of the age specific distance and then step out 2m so that the player has to make a diagonal run with the ball. Set up the remaining 3 mannequins as previously and a turn line after the last mannequin. On turning the players go back through the mannequins in the same way. Each player has 30 seconds to complete the challenge. The player score 29 points for every mannequin they go past. Age specific distances 6-8 years 10m 9-11years 15m 12-13 years 20m 14+ 25m

SHORT PASS

EQUIPMENT: 4 balls, 4 passing gates, cones Mark out a square relevant to each age group. Use 4 disc cones to mark out each corner. In the middle of each side of the square place a passing gate. Place 1 ball in each corner. Mark out a 3m square in the middle. Each player has 30 seconds to start from cone 1, take the ball into the centre square, turn and pass the ball through the corresponding gate. This is then repeated with balls 2, 3 and 4. The challenge finishes when the player runs back to cone 1, or 30 seconds has elapsed. The player scores 50 points for every successful pass through the gates. If the players scores 4 successful passes and finishes within the 30 seconds they will score 10 bonus points for each second below.

CONTROL

EQUIPMENT: Different coloured cones Players must juggle the ball using any part of their body but their hands from start to finish without the ball touching the ground. If the ball should hit the ground before the end line, the players must dribble the ball back to the beginning to start again. When the player reaches the end line they must dribble the ball back to the start for another attempt. Each player should attempt the course as many times as possible in 1 minute. 50 points are scored for each complete circuit. Age Groups 6-8 years 5m 9-11 years 10m 12-13 years 15m 14+ 20m

LOFTED PASS

EQUIPMENT: Lofted pass mat, 4 balls, different coloured cones, 1 mannequin

The aim is to loft a pass whilst the ball is moving and hit the mannequin at the centre of the target. Any pass which hits the mannequin score 100 points. Each player has 4 balls to pass in a time limit of 25 seconds. 1 ball can be played with the weaker foot for double points. However, players do not have to use their weaker foot but if they do, they must indicate that they are doing so. For each attempt the ball must be played out of their feet and hit whilst the ball is moving before the end line.
