ARIZONA FALL LEAGUE


The Arizona Fall League is set to begin its 21st season on Tuesday, October 8. Each AFL team is
comprised of 5 major league organizations working cooperatively. Each organization is required to
assign six of their most promising Major League prospects to the league. The roster includes righthanded pitchers Dominic Leone, Brandon Maurer and Carson Smith, left-handed pitchers
Danny Hultzen, infielders Patrick Kivlehan and Chris Taylor and outfielder Stefen Romero.
Smither was on the also a member of the Peoria Javelinas in 2012. Jim Pankovits will serve as
Manager for the Peoria Javelinas. The Major League affiliations for each AFL team are as follows:
Peoria Javelinas (Mariners, Padres, Phillies, Reds, Twins); Salt Rivers Rafters (Blue Jays,
Diamondbacks, Nationals, Rockies, White Sox); Mesa Solar Sox (Astros, Cubs, Dodgers, Orioles,
Tigers); Phoenix Desert Dogs (Athletics, Braves, Brewers, Marlins, Rays) and Scottsdale Scorpions
(Angels, Giants, Indians, Pirates, Yankees).

wasnt enough as Tacoma lost to Salt Lake 4-8 on Thursday night. 2B Ty Kelly (3x3, BB) led the
team with 3 hits, while CF Abraham Almonte (2x3, RBI) and 3B/CF Nate Tenbrink (2x5) each
record 2 of the Rainiers 10 hits. Starter Hector Noesi (6.0,7,4,4,0,5,2HR) recorded the loss,
allowing 4 runs on 7 hits in 6.0 innings. RH Tom Wilhelmsen (0.2,4,4,4,0,0) allowed 4 runs on 4 hits

REHAB ASSIGNMENT: C Mike Zunino began a rehab assignment with Tacoma on Aug. 27. He
went 0-for-3 with 1 walk as C. In 3 games on rehab assignment, he is batting .100 (1x10) with 3
runs scored, 1 triple and 3 walks. Zunino was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a fractured
hamate bone in his left hand on July 26. He fractured the hamate bone in his left hand on his RBI
single to left field in the second inning on July 25 vs. the Twins. He remained in the game for 3 more innings before being removed prior to
the top of the 5th inning. Since his selection on June 12, Zunino appeared in 29 games with Seattle, batting .242 (24x99) with 4 doubles, 2
home runs and 10 RBI.

OF NOTE: OF Abraham Almonte has hit safely in 12 of his last 14 games, batting .368 (21x57) with 7 runs scored, 4 doubles, 1 triple, 3
home runs, 14 RBI, 9 walks and 3 stolen bases. He has also hit safely in 21 of 28 games in August, while reaching base safely in 26
games. During this stretch he is batting .333 (36x108) with 17 runs scored, 6 doubles, 2 triples, 5 home runs, 18 RBI, 23 walks and 4 stolen
bases. After walking 23 times in his first 65 games with Tacoma, Almonte has walked 26 in his last 29 games, including 6 multi-walk
games. INF Rich Poythress has hit safely in 5 of his last 6 games, batting .435 (10x23) with 4 runs scored, 1 double, 1 home run, 5 RBI
and 4 walks. INF/OF Nate Tenbrink has recorded multi-hits in 4 of his last 7 games, batting .367 (11x30) with 6 runs scored, 3 doubles, 2
home, 6 RBI and 2 walks. RHP Taijuan Walker struck out 9 batters in his last start on Aug. 25 at Tucson, increasing his season strikeout
total to 160. Walker leads all Mariners farmhands in strikeouts and is the first pitcher to strikeout at least 160 in a single season since RHP
Francisco Cruceta (185) and LHP Justin Thomas (162) in 2006. Walker tossed 14.0 scoreless innings over his first 3 AAA starts, before
allowing a solo home run in the 5th inning on July 7 at Salt Lake. Overall he is 5-3 with a 3.61 ERA (23 ER, 57.1 IP) in 11 starts with
Tacoma. Since joining Tacoma on August 17 from AA Jackson, RH Forrest Snow is 2-0 in 8.0 scoreless innings. He has limited
opponents during this stretch to 4 hits, while walking 1 and striking out 13.
WALKER NAMED PCL PITCHER OF THE WEEK: RHP Taijuan Walker was named the Pacific Coast League Pitcher of the Week for
August 19-25. Walker earned wins in each of his two starts over that stretch, limiting opponents to one run and striking out a combined 15
batters through 11.0 innings of work. He held Colorado Springs scoreless on three hits and fanned six on August 20, and in his next outing,
restricted Tucson to one run on six hits and struck out nine in a start on the road on August 25. A graduate of Yucaipa (CA) High School,
Walker was selected by the Seattle Mariners as the 43rd overall pick in the supplemental first round of the 2010 draft. He entered his fourth
professional season ranked by Baseball Prospectus as the No. 1 prospect in the Mariners farm system, and was listed by Baseball
America as the organizations No. 2 farmhand. Walker is now the fifth different Rainiers player to garner a weekly league award and the
fourth to nab Pitcher of the Week honors. Pitchers Andrew Carraway (April 22-29), Jeremy Bonderman (April 29-May6) and James Paxton
(June 17-23), and infielder Nick Franklin (April 22-29) were each recognized for producing outstanding weeks earlier this season.

RECAP: The Generals scored 4 runs combined between the 4th-6th innings as Jackson camefrom-behind to defeat Huntsville 5-3 on Thursday night. SS Chris Taylor (2x4, 2B, BB, SB), 3B
Ramon Morla (2x4, R, HR, RBI) and LF Leon Landry (2x4, R, 2B, RBI) each recorded 2 of the
Generals 8 hits. Starter Anthony Vasquez (7.0,7,3,2,1,1,2HR) recorded his 2nd win of the season,
allowing 3 runs (2 ER) on 7 hits over 7.0 innings. RH Stephen Kohlscheen (1.0,0,0,0,0,2) stuck
out 2 in a scoreless 8th inning, while RH Carson Smith (1.0,0,0,0,0,2) struck out 2 in a 1-2-3 9th
inning to earn his 15th save.
OF NOTE: OF Jabari Blash has hit safely 10 of his last 11 games, batting .400 (14x35) with 6 runs
scored, 2 doubles, 1 home run, 10 RBI and 15 walks. INF Chris Taylor is batting .342 (38x111)
with 21 runs scored, 5 doubles, 1 triple, 7 RBI, 14 walks and 9 stolen bases in 29 games in August.
RH Carson Smith has allowed only 1 earned run over his last 27.2 innings (0.33 ERA), including
15.2 consecutive scoreless innings (since July 23). After allowing 5 runs over his first 6
appearances of the season, Smith has allowed only 5 earned runs over his last 37 relief
appearances. During this stretch he is 0-1 with 11 saves and a 1.03 ERA (5 ER, 43.2 IP). Since
April 22, Smith has lowered his ERA from 8.44 to 1.84. Smith has struck out at least 1 batter in 38
of 43 games (70 strikeouts). LH Kyle Hunter has held oppoents scoreless in 27 of 33
appearances this season. Overall he is 3-0 with 1 save and a 1.42 ERA (9 ER, 57.0 IP). He has
limited opponents to a .219 (46x210), while walking 16 and striking out 42. RH Stephen
Kohlscheen has allowed only 3 earned runs over his last 32.0 innings (0.84 ERA). During this 18game stretch (since June 26), he is 5-0 with 1 save. INF Steven Proscia hit 3 solo home runs on
Aug. 26 vs. Chattanooga. It was his 8th career multi-home run game and 2nd this season (last: 2,
6/23 vs. Mobile w/Jackson). It also marks his 3rd career 3-home run game (also: 4/19/12 vs. Inland
Empire and 7/14/12 vs. Stockton w/High Desert). He is 1 of 24 minor league players to hit at least 3

BLASH NAMED PLAYER OF THE WEEK: OF Jabari Blash was named Southern League Player
of the Week, for Aug. 19-25. In 9 games this week, Blash led the Southern Leauge in average
(.500/12x24), on-base percentage (1.526) and walks (14). Overall he hit .500 (12x24) with 4 runs
scored, 2 doubles, 2 home runs, 6 RBI, 14 walks. Blash was promoted to AA Jackson from A High
Desert on Aug. 2. In 22 game, he is batting .315 (23x73) with 9 runs scored, 3 doubles, 6 home
runs, 12 RBI and 18 walks.

RECAP: The Mavericks scored at least 1 run between the 2nd and 8th innings, as High Desert defeated Rancho Cucamonga 14-3 on
Thursday night. DH Guillermo Pimentel (3x5, 2 R, 2B, 3B, 2 RBI, BB) and LF Jabari Henry (3x4, 3 R, 2B, 3B, RBI, BB) each recorded 3
hits, while falling a home run short of hitting for the cycle. CF Jamal Austin (2x5, R, 2B, 3B, RBI) and LF Jordy Lara (2x6, 2 R, HR, 4 RBI)
each recorded 2 of the Mavericks 14 hits. 7 of Mavericks 14 hits went for extra-bases (3-2B, 3-3B, HR). Starter Stephen Landazuri

The VSL Mariners defeated the VSL Cubs 11-8 in 12 innings yesterday to win the 2013 VSL Championship 2-0. It was the VSL Mariners
2nd VSL Championship (also 2002). Team finished runner-up in the Championship game in 2012, 2010, 2008 and 2005.
INF/OF Yordi Calderon hit .343 (82x239) with 68 runs scored, 20 doubles, 3 triples, 11 home runs and 42 RBI in 68 games. He led VSL in
on-base percentage (.448), slugging percentage (.590), runs scored, (68) and extra-base hits (34), while also ranking T1st in games (68),
2nd in hits, doubles, home runs and average and T4th in RBI. Teammate INF/OF Gianfranco Wawoe hit .328 (80x244) with 63 runs
scored, 19 doubles, 4 triples, 6 home runs, 30 RBI and 21 stolen bases in 68 games with the VSL Mariners. Wawoe ranked amongst the
league leaders in nearly every offensive category, including T1st in games played, 2nd in on-base percentage (.415) and runs scored, 3rd
in hits and stolen bases, 4th in doubles and at-bats, T4th in extra-base hits (29) and 5th in average.
Starters Kevin Gadea and Pablo Lopez have combined to go 16-2 with a 2.61 ERA (40 ER, 138.0 IP) in 26 starts. Gadea went 9-1 with a

The Mariners wrapped up the season batting .222 (499x2243) with 298 runs scored, 89 doubles, 16 triples, 22 home runs and 241 RBI in
70 games in the Dominican Summer League. INF Ismael Alcantara led the team in hits and RBI, while finishing 2nd on the team in
average. Overall he hit .275 (64x233) with 32 runs scored, 8 doubles, 4 triple, 2 home runs and 37 RBI in 66 games. INF Angel Jimenz
and INF Leurys Vargas each led the team with 5 home runs.
The Mariners pitching staff had a 3.14 ERA, including 5 players that finished with an ERA under 2.00. Overall the team allowed 295 runs
