Part II: Action Plan

The following action plan was written as a response to the already existing Five Year Diversity Plan presented by Virginia Commonwealth University. Although we support the initiatives which address the needs of faculty, due to the Five-Year Plans heavy emphasis on such issues, the following action plan focuses mainly on the needs of students and the Richmond community.

Goal 1: Goal 2:

VCU will create a new model for the student census. VCU will create a more efficient, inclusive, and comprehensive system for measuring the campus climate. VCU will create a curriculum which addresses the cultural composition and needs of the student body.

Goal 1: VCU will create a new model for the student census. Actions G1. 1. Develop groundbreaking, one of a kind census model which will be utilized within the VCU community to promote a new understanding of diversity. Objective G1.1.1. Implement census which addresses multiple fronts of diversity including sex, gender identity, sexuality, color, body size & shape, ethnicity, nationality, nativity, immigration status, language, socioeconomic class, mental health, physical ability, religion & faith, politics, age, familial background, education, and environment. Measures -Increase in recruitment & retention of diverse students. -Increase in recruitment & retention of diverse faculty and staff. -Increase in national recognition for a more comprehensive understanding of diversity. Goal 3: VCU will provide a curriculum which addresses the cultural composition and needs of the student body. Actions G3.1. Increase diversity in course offerings in language arts. Objectives G3.1.1. Increase diversity in language arts programs to include course offerings in Arabic, Bengali, Chinese, Farsi, Hindi, Hebrew, Korean, Japanese, Punjabi, Sign Language, Tagalog, Thai, Turkish, Urdu, Vietnamese, and Zulu. G3.2.1.Create a model of immersion & bi-lingual education which utilizes the skills of students who already have significant experience in a given language. G3.2.2 Provide immersion & bi-lingual education which is interdisciplinary with other programs within the university. G3.3.1.
