Great Barrier Island: Named by Captain Cook in 1769, lies about 90 kilometres north-east of Auckland and is accessible by both ferry, car ferry and air. On a day trip, you can ride the ferry from downtown Auckland cruising to the three main harbours. You get to view the beautiful white sand beaches of the eastern coast. Great tramping tracks criss-cross the island--rental cars and bikes are available. Waiheki Island: Waiheke Island the gem of the Hauraki Gulf is only 35 minutes by ferry from Auckland New Zealand but a million miles away in pace and beauty.
