Do you know that there is a state in Malaysia called The Land of the Hornbills? For many years this is what people called Sarawak. Yet the surprising fact is that the number of hornbills left in The Land of the Hornbills is becoming fewer. A hornbill is a beautiful and unique bird. It gets its name from the large horn on its beak. It used to be seen all over Malaysia, in rural as well as urban areas. Hornbills were often seen in pairs. Nowadays, most of the hornbills are found in national parks and zoos. Most hornbills live on treetops. They feed on fruit, although quite a few of them are known to live on small plants and animals. They lay eggs and breed in holes in trees. The female is holed up in the tree hole which is covered with mud and earth brought by her partner. She sits there to hatch her eggs and her mate feeds her through this hole. The birds are treasured for their beautiful feathers and unique beaks.
