Slaughtering Applications
Slaughtering applications consist of product at body temperature: Leaf lard Caul fat Belly fat Intestines Blood Lungs Gut Mucosa

A typical slaughtering application uses a Tuthill HD Series product with a hopper inlet port. As the animal carcass travels from the slaughter floor, fats and organs are pulled from the cavity and dropped into a trough with a hopper. The Tuthill HD pump is ideal for this application for the following reasons: The pump can run dry without damage with intermittent flow of solid product. The pump impeller sharp leading edge is capable of shearing these solids to allow entry into the pumping cavity, eliminating the need for a grinder on the suction side of the pump. The Model 125H pump is available with a removable faceplate for daily cleaning, if necessary, and has a suction port design for easy mounting of a hopper. High torque-strength shafts provide the strength required to shear product as it enters the pump fluid chamber. Slow operating speeds from 30 RPM to 150 RPM provide for adequate fluid chamber filling and extended wear life on abrasive applications such as blood. If a grinder is required for the pump suction port for applications such as condemned birds, the output of the grinder should be sized so as not to starve the suction port of the pump.
Successful slaughtering applications are found in pork, beef, poultry and fish plants. Typical HD pumps used for these applications include Models 125H, 120A, 330 and 600 all with significant suction port sizes to prevent bridging of product on the suction side of the pump.
Rendering Applications
A typical product pumped by a Tuthill pump from the slaughtering floor is transferred to a rendering application: Black gut (hog entrails and stomachs) Hide fleshings Catch basin skimmings Viscera, bone, and packing house waste Rendered fat and fines Poultry offal Condemned birds Skin Hot lard Tallow Tuthill HD pumps are recommended for applications containing solids and abrasives, while Tuthill GlobalGear pumps are recommended for use with refined oils and liquid lards. Tuthill GlobalGear internal gear pumps are the first choice for reliable, low-maintenance pumping of refined oils and liquid lards. Generally, cast iron construction is used with carbon bushings.
Note:
Shear-pin couplings are recommended for these applications in case of metal products falling into the hopper, e.g. cutting knife. A quick replacement of a shear pin minimizes downtime in these applications.

Tuthill GlobalGear pumps are recommended for rendered clarified fats for the following reasons: Overall industrial heavy-duty construction that provides long life in demanding environments. No-maintenance, sealed-for-life thrust bearings vs. 500-hour lubrication schedule for competitive design. High-strength ductile iron rotors and idlers are furnished as standard to withstand potential cold start or upset conditions vs. expensive pricepremium, steel-fitted optional construction for competitive designs. Patented lubrication feature to provide positive lubrication to the idler bushing, extending bushing life. Standard shaft sizes used to make readily available replacement bearings, packing, and seals from local sources, vs. proprietary shaft sizes in competitive designs.
Pork fats can easily be pumped with the Tuthill SD pump, provided that there is a positive screw feed of the product into the pump port, and steam-traced discharge lines to enhance the flow of the solid product to the rendering areas. Tuthill SD pumps are recommended for edible applications for the following reasons: 316 stainless steel construction with removable faceplate for accessibility for cleaning. Sharp leading edge of the single-lobe impeller provides strength to shear solids. High-torque strength shafts prevent twisting due to low drive speeds and solid content. PTFE packing is recommended for solid pumping applications. Hot clearance fluid chambers are recommended for high-temperature cleaning applications.
Rendering applications pump products from a meat processing plant to be transported to other markets turkey offal is commonly transported to pet food processors. Tall oil may be transported to cosmetics or ink procedures. Other rendered products such as blood and fish waste are transported to fertilizer producing plants. Positive displacement pumps are required for loading and unloading transport vehicles, and are usually required for further processing of products in the different markets.
Poultry sausage applications require the ability for a pump to handle trimmed carcasses to a bone-meat separator. Tuthill HD pumps are recommended for this application for the following reasons: Model 330 and 600 pumps provide a large suction port to prevent bridging of product in the suction area. 316 stainless steel construction is available. Sharp leading edge of the single-lobe impeller provides strength to shear solids. High-torque strength shafts prevent twisting due to low drive speeds and solid content.
Trim/Processing Applications
Trimming and processing floors typically work with chilled meats or poultry. At refrigerated temperatures, beef fat cannot be pumped with circumferential piston pumps.

shear large solids and organs with the sharp leading edge on the impeller and hightorque shaft strength, sometimes eliminating the requirement for a grinder on the suction side of the pump.
Positive displacement pumps play a very important role in todays meat processing industry, and the Tuthill Pump Group has a full range of product offerings to address the many pumping challenges found in the meat processing industry. Tuthill Pump has been a manufacturer of positive displacement pumps for 75 years, earning a reputation as a supplier for reliable and durable pumps for the most demanding industries.
