JKH added 52% to the daily turnover in a dormant market

Colombo Bourse was dormant however fell to negative with CTC: The bourse remained stagnant during most of the trading today however in the latter trading session it dipped and ASPI ended at 5,672.64 with a loss of 14 points. Late hours dip was largely on account of the dip in Ceylon tobacco Company (-3.8%). Drop in prices in Commercial Leasing and finance (-7.9%) and Sri Lanka Telecom (2.0%) affected the index performance however on a marginal note. Turnover levels were lackluster at LKR239 mn and 52% contribution stemmed from John Keells Holdings.

BFI sector showed some interest: Some interest was shown on-board in the BFI sector led by Peoples Leasing and Finance, Central Finance Company, Union Bank and Sampath Bank. PLC recorded a single transaction of 490k shares which traded at LKR13.6. The counter closed at LKR13.5 with a dip of 1.5%. CFIN also recorded three transactions amounting to 25k shares at LKR183.0-183.1 and ended the day at LKR183.1 with a marginal gain of 0.1%.

Retailers on a dormant note: Retail interest was low and concentrated on Central Investment and Finance, Commercial Credit and Finance and SMB Leasing.

JKH topped turnover adding 52% to daily turnover: A single crossing was recorded for the day by John Keells Holdings amounting to 440k shares which changed hands at LKR210.0. The counter dominated the on-board activity supported by a single 50k block at LKR210.0. JKH settled at LKR209.4 with a dip of 0.6%.

Sri Lanka opposition warns on weak finance companies Sri Lanka's main opposition has warned that several finance companies are taking public deposits without meeting minimum statutory requirements, saying action was needed prevent disasters. [Source: www.lbo.lk] Rupee ends weaker; further fall likely The rupee ended weaker on Thursday on importer demand for dollars, and dealers expect the local currency to fall further in the coming days in the absence of strong foreign inflows.However, the Central Bank expected the currency to stabilise due to $209 million in inflow raised through Sri Lanka development bonds from a number of Middle East banks. The rupee spot next or one-day forward, which was active in the market in the absence of spot trade, fell to 133.05/25 per dollar, compared with Wednesdays close of 133.05/15. Velema Holdings, a Netherland based investment firm, is offering to put together a turnkey dairy facility if about 1,500 hactares of land with fresh water facilities is made available. German Industrial Output Dropped in July After June Surge German industrial production fell more than expected in July after surging in June, adding to signs that growth in Europes biggest economy is moderating. Output, adjusted for seasonal swings, fell 1.7 percent from June, when it jumped a revised 2 percent, the Economy Ministry in Berlin said today. Economists forecast a decline of 0.5 percent, according to the median of 41 estimates in a Bloomberg News survey. Production slid 2.2 percent from a year earlier when adjusted for working days. [Source: www.bloomberg.com] U.K. Factories Boost Output Amid Signs of Economic Recovery U.K. manufacturing production rose for a second month in July, adding to signs of an accelerating economy that has led investors to bet the Bank of England will increase interest rates earlier than it has projected. Factory output rose 0.2 percent from June, when it gained 2 percent, the Office for National Statistics said today in London. The increase was in line with the median forecast of 23 estimates in a Bloomberg News survey. Industrial output was unchanged as warm weather reduced demand for energy.
