PROJECT CHARTER

REASONS FOR UNDERTAKING THE PROJECT This project is undertaken in the power sector, for Reliance Power. The project involves installation of Hydrogen cooling system for generators of a 3X660MW supercritical thermal power plant, located in Mundra, Gujarat. This project is undertaken keeping in mind the high demand of power in the rapidly urbaned India. The power plants efficiency is sought to be increased through the project- the alternative of which is to set up new furnaces, with a cost much higher than what this project would cost.

PROJECT SCOPE: Objective: To install a highly efficient hydrogen cooling system for the turbines in the Mundra thermal power plant. The project would be completed within a span of three months at a cost not to exceed INR 2 million. Key Deliverables: A highly efficient hydrogen cooled turbine delivering high power. Leak proof transmission system A turbine sealed from atmosphere, protecting it from dust, humidity etc. which increases the operation and reliability A circulating closed loop of pipes carrying high purity hydrogen gases A gas to water heat exchanger which removes the heat from the hydrogen gases

TIMELINE:

BUDGET AND SOURCES OF FUNDING With an estimated total project cost of INR 2 million, the Oriental Bank of Commerce is providing a loan of 1.5 million and Vijaya Bank is proving a loan of half a million. TARGET PROJECTS BENEFITS Hydrogen is a common element that can be used as an energy source for fuel cells. Hydrogen is an ideal fuel source: when used, the only by-products are water, heat, and electricity. In addition, hydrogen provides a number of other benefits. The use of gaseous hydrogen as a coolant is based on its properties, namely low density, high specific heat, and the highest thermal conductivity of all gases; it is 7-10 times better at cooling than air. Another advantage of hydrogen is its easy detection by hydrogen sensors. A hydrogen-cooled generator can be significantly smaller, and therefore less expensive, than an air-cooled one. For stator cooling, water can be used.
