DrWilsonthisweekwonthe2013Eureka PrizeforOutstandingYoungResearcher. Herinsightsarehelpingtoprioritise conservationeffortsinBorneoandelsewhere inawaythatbalancescompetinglanduse demandsandtheprotectionofforeststooffset greenhousegasemissions. Overthepastfiveyears,DrWilsonhas revolutionisedapproachestoconservation spending,saidFrankHowarth,directorofthe AustralianMuseum,whichrunstheEureka Prizes. DrWilsonsaidthatinthepast,manyenvironmentalscienceproblemswereneitherrigorously defined,norsolved. Thetransparentframeworksandmethodologiesthatwehavedeveloped,andcontinuetodevelopas partofmyAustralianResearchCouncilFutureFellowship,incorporatecomplexissuesthat previouslywereseenasimportantbutwerenotexplicitlyaccountedfor. Thisincludestakingaccountofsocioeconomiccontext,habitatdynamicsandecosystemservices, suchascarbonstorageandsequestrationofcarbondioxide. ThisEurekaPrizeisagreatendorsementoftheinnovativeinvestmentmodelsthatareresultingfrom collaborativeresearchintoglobalconservationchallenges,shesaid. Iamthrilledtobeabletobringconservationissuestolightinthisway. Eurekajudgingcriteriaincludesoriginality,scientificrigourandpotentialimpacts. DrWilson,fromUQ'sSchoolofBiologicalSciences,ischiefinvestigatorandUQNodeDirectorofthe EnvironmentalDecisionsHub(aNationalEnvironmentalResearchCentre,fundedwith$12million overfouryears)andoftheARCCentreofExcellenceforEnvironmentalDecisions($12millionover sevenyears). From2009to2012,DrWilsonwaschiefinvestigatoronanAustralianResearchCouncilproject involvingthreeofAustralia'slargestnongovernmentconservationorganisations:TheNature Conservancy,TheWildernessSocietyandGreeningAustralia. HerresearchhasbeenpublishedinjournalsincludingNature,Science,PLoSBiology,and ProceedingsoftheNationalAcademyofSciences. ShehaswonAustralianAcademyofScienceawards,aEuropeanCommissionfellowship,aNorman WettenhallFoundationGrant,aMillenniumEcosystemAssessmentFellowship,anAustralian PostgraduateAwardandPostdoctoralFellowship,anAustralianBicentennialScholarship(Menzies CentreofAustralianStudies,London)andaUQUniversityMedalandDean'sCommendation. DrWilson's$10,000OutstandingYoungResearcherEurekaPrizeissponsoredbyMacquarie University. AnotherEurekaPrize,forInfectiousDiseasesResearchissponsoredbytheAustralianInfectious DiseasesResearchCentre,whichisbasedatUQandtheQueenslandInstituteforMedicalResearch.
