Separating recyclables will be a prac-
tice of the past for Burlington County
residents starting next May with the im-
plementation of streamlined recycling.
The big blue cart, which residents
currently use for cardboard and paper,
will soon be an all-purpose recycling
tool.
The county boasts single-stream as
convenient and a way to increase recy-
cling volume as well as save money. Tab-
ernacle Township administrator Doug
Cramer agrees wholeheartedly.
Weve always been supportive of the
countys cart program. It will only in-
crease the tonnage that we recycle,
which saves us tax dollars as well as
lowers our disposal costs, Cramer said.
Moving away from separate bins for
bottles and cans will hopefully increase
the number of people in the township
that do recycle.
According to the county, studies show
single-stream brings with it an increase
of 10 percent or more in recycling. The

benefit Deborah Heart and Lung

heart, lung, and vascular hospi-
tal. This year Deborahs 2.5 mile
Walk-a-Thon has a new location
scenic Freedom Park in Medford
and a new companion event, a 5K
run through the center of down-
town Medford Township, sure to
please all the area runners. Race
start is 9 a.m. on Union Street.
Each year that the Deborah
Hospital Foundations Bohlen,
Mt. Holly, Medford and Home
Chapters have hosted the walk
the event has grown. Last years
270 walkers and 60 sponsors
raised $15,000 for Deborah Heart
and Lung Center, which in 91
years has never billed a patient.
Deborah Patient Care Techni-
cian Laralee Remson is one of
those with specific fundraising
goals.
I am hoping to raise $500,
Remson said, but I expect to sur-
pass that. I have a strong relation-
ship with my Deborah patients,
and I know that what I am doing
will give back to them the most. I
love being a part of Deborah.

With support from an alliance
of education advocates, Burling-
ton County College unveiled an
initiative to distribute 40,000
books to children in need
throughout Burlington County.
Working with N.J. Higher Edu-
cation secretary Rochelle Hen-
dricks, John Harmon, Sr., presi-
dent and CEO, of the African
American Chamber of Com-
merce, and First Book, a nonprof-
it social enterprise that provides
new books and educational re-
sources to kids in need, BCC stu-
dents will coordinate efforts to
distribute free books to schools
and organizations serving com-
munities in need throughout
Burlington County.
The college is the first in the
nation to build this effort into its
English and Service Learning
curriculum.
Every child should have
books to read at home, Burling-
ton County freeholder Joe Don-
nelly said. Burlington County
College will be a model for the
rest of the nation on how stu-
dents and community groups can
get books to children who need
them.
First Book is part of an educa-
tion initiative by the African
American Chamber of Com-
merce of New Jersey called
Making New Jersey More Com-
petitive. The goal is to develop
and strengthen the marketable
skills of future job seekers
throughout the state. First Book
will help achieve this goal by de-
livering new, high-quality books
and materials to children in need
in Burlington County.
This is one of a number of ini-
tiatives by our organization that
will provide an immediate impact
in transforming the lives of our
young people and place them on a
path of success, Harmon said.
Hendricks wants the initiative
to succeed and spread throughout
the state.
What a wonderful project! Stu-
dent volunteers will help distrib-
ute 40,000 new books to open
worlds of ideas for disadvantaged
children, Hendricks said. I am
very pleased that Burlington
County College is collaborating
with First Book and the African
American Chamber of Com-
merce to stir the imaginations
and build the literacy skills of
children throughout Burlington
County.
The initiative is an important
part of BCCs new student suc-
cess division and agenda aimed at
helping more students complete
college and reducing the number
of students who enter college in
need of developmental courses.
We believe all students can
succeed with the right approach,
BCC president David C. Hespe
said. The simple act of giving
children books will make them
stronger readers and develop a
lifelong passion of learning that
will help them succeed through-
out their education and career.
This is also a tremendous oppor-
tunity for our students to partici-
pate in a worthwhile and reward-
ing project.
First Book president and CEO
Kyle Zimmer said the initiative
will instill leadership skills in
current BCC students and im-
prove educational opportunities
for children in need.
No one understands the trans-
formative power of education bet-
ter than community college stu-
dents, said Zimmer. Were
thrilled that Burlington County
College is stepping up to trans-
form the lives of kids in need in
their community with brand-new
books. Those 40,000 books are
going to help turn a lot of chil-
dren into readers.
The project will span the entire
2013-2014 academic year. Students
will identify and contact poten-
tially eligible groups and encour-
age them to apply to First Book.
This spring, a truck will deliv-
er 40,000 books with a retail value
of nearly $400,000, donated by
publishers to BCCs Mt. Laurel
Campus.
Students will sort the books
and distribute them to groups
that meet certain criteria, such as
serving disabled children, mili-
tary families or a large number of
low-income families.

is in landfills. Last year, recycling saved the
towns more than $3.2 million in landfill tip-
ping fees. Those cost-savings are effectively
tax savings, since they improve the bottom
line of municipal budgets.
Currently, the county is working to find
out whether residents are in need of the
signature blue cart, or a second cart to sup-
plement the amount of recyclables put to
the curb each week. Initially, the cart pro-
gram did have a few detractors in Taberna-
cle.
Some residents had concerns about the
size of the cart, which size they would need
and where they would store it. Also if the
can is broken or the lid is cracked, who
would take care of it, but the carts are
under warranty. The concerns were ad-
dressed, Cramer said.
The county estimates that more than
30,000 homes may need an extra cart, of dif-
fering sizes. It will take months to gather
everyones information, order the carts,
and deliver the right size carts to the right
homes next spring. If residents currently
have a 48-gallon, 64-gallon or 96-gallon cart,
theyre asked to visit the county website to
determine whether they need a second one
before May. Cramer said the carts them-
selves are one of the programs greatest
benefits.
The cart is lidded, which helps us in re-
gard to litter. Trash is not blowing out of
the top and the cans dont tip over easily. It
helps keep the community clean and free of
litter, Cramer said. Also, the lid keeps out
rainwater, making them lighter and easier
to maintain.
The county assured residents that the
program is free of charge and the frequen-
cy of service will not change. Tabernacle
will still provide a drop-off center for resi-
dents that have recyclables between pick-
ups.
Currently, major facility modifications
are being made to the Robert C. Shinn Recy-
cling Center in Westampton. Following
that, new single-stream sorting equipment
will be installed, according to the county.

for registration is Sept. 30.

welve years have passed since
the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks on
New York City and Washing-
ton, D.C.
Thats hard to believe.
Its hard to believe that it was 12
years ago that this country changed
forever.
Its hard to believe that it was 12
years ago that so many innocent lives
were lost.
Its hard to believe how much our
lives have changed in those 12 years
how heightened security at public
places, especially airports, is expected
and openly accepted; how a persons
privacy is not always private; how
farewell and welcome home celebra-
tions for servicemen and women seem
to be commonplace.
There are so many other examples
to mention of how our lives have
changed since that fateful day 12 years
ago.
Here we are, more than a decade
later, with 9/11 as a memory for all of
us who lived it, and a history lesson
for those who didnt.
Twelve years later, we should all be
proud of the way we are remembering
and honoring those who lost their
lives that day as well as their families,
and also the servicemen and women
and their families who so bravely
have volunteered to serve this country.
In addition to annual memorials put
on at the national level, local commu-
nities are playing a large part, too. Our
community, and others around us, are
setting up 9/11 memorials, obtaining
steel from the World Trade Center to
display and hosting 9/11 remem-
brances.
We should all be proud of ourselves
and our fellow citizens. But we should
not stop here just because we have
done well so far.
We should never forget what hap-
pened 12 years ago. We should always
respectfully pause and respect those
who were taken from us and those
who fight for our freedom.
And we should ensure that those
who werent alive 12 years ago, or were
too young to remember, are taught
about what happened that day, and
how it will continue to affect our lives
and theirs.
We will never forget.

County implements new
document handling process

Tyler announced that his office
will be the first in the state to im-
plement a new document han-
dling process that will drastical-
ly reduce turn-around in record-
ing and verifying the critical in-
formation on deeds, mortgages
and other documents submitted
for recording.
Those who typically bring
documents to the clerks office for
recording will definitely notice
and appreciate the accelerated
recording, Tyler said. The tim-
ing for this couldnt be more criti-
cal. The real estate market is
clearly on the upswing, and I an-
ticipate we will be recording
40,000 more documents that the
78,000 we handled in 2012.
Revenues from recording a
large portion of which will go to-
ward the county budget and help
reduce taxes will also increase
significantly by years end, Tyler
said. We anticipate total rev-
enues of more than $6.5 million,
or about $1.5 million more than
last year.
The new system, called double
key verification, employs an
electronic verification process,
which checks documents for such
key information as names, land
identification, document type,
and page count. Currently, the
clerks office relies on in-person
sight verification.
To put it another way, Tyler
said, the amount of time that is
required for recordings will be
significantly reduced by allowing
technology to verify documents.
A contract was awarded by
freeholders to AMCAD of Hern-
don, Va., to implement the new
system, at a cost of 70 cents per
document. This cost is offset by
statutory user fees that the clerks
office receives from its recording
services.
