GUITAR PACKS; INDIVIDUAL LESSON CONTENTS

Blues Guitar Pack; 4, 8 or 12 Lessons

Lesson nº 1 to nº 4

- Classic blues theme (ex: John Lee Hooker’s “Boom Boom” and “Boogie
Chillen”, BB King’s “The Thrill Is Gone” and “Everyday I Have The Blues”,
Buddy Guy’s “The Way You Been Treating Me” and Hello San Francisco and
finally Delta Blues/Slide Guitar Legend Robert Johnson’s “Cross Road Blues”
and “Sweet Home Chicago”

- Listen to various songs and take a quick look at the history of each artist and
tune.

- Go through the basic structure (chord form) of the chosen tune.

- Play melody (on instrument or “hum” )

- Analyse harmony for proper use of scales and chord voicings.

- Transcribe guitar solo to instrument.

- Play tune from beginning to end.

Lesson nº5 to nº 8

- Taking a closer look at the history of “The Blues”

- Origins; African/American slaves mainly from West-Africa (Mali, Senegal,


Gambia and Ghana) are shipped to America. The blues becomes a musical
style based on both European Harmonic structure and the African call-and-
response tradition, transformed into an interplay of voice and guitar.

- Prewar; Ragtime, Memphis Blues, St. Louis Blues, Delta (Mississippi) Blues,
Urban Blues, Boogie Woogie, Big Band Blues and Jump Blues.

- Early Post-War Era; After World War II Electric Blues became very popular
introducing “Chicago Blues” which had a huge influence on mainstream
American popular music. In the late 50’s there was Californian Blues (a
transition between Chicago/Jump Blues and Swing with some jazz guitar
influence) and Swamp Blues.

- 1960s and 1970s; British Blues Movement (UK artists such as; Fleetwood
Mac, John Mayall and the Bluesbreakers, The Rolling Stones, The Yardbirds
and Cream. Music of Civil Rights and Free Speech Movements, Westside
Blues, Texas Rock-Blues.

- Common “Open Tunings” used in blues, mainly for slide-guitar

- Pick new tune to work on.

- Go through the basic structure (chord form) of the chosen tune.

Lesson nº 9 to nº 12

- Taking a closer look at scales, patterns and typical blues licks.

- Slide-guitar techniques.

- Fingerpickin’ and “Chicken Pickin’ techniques

- Rhythm guitar and right-hand technique (pick and thumb)

- Equipment; guitars, amps, effects, strings, slides, picks etc.

- Perform one tune with band live on stage.
