Assignment: Book Covers

Recreate the book cover of your favorite novel. Have designs produced
in pairs, offering alternative sides of the novel. Include the title and
author on the front cover, and chose what to include from the text of
the original’s back cover.

Note: The covers I have done show two of the themes in the book, love
and reality. The first cover is my interpretation of reality in the book; it
shows the grittiness of real life, the complications and struggles that
are faced. The second cover is about love and commitment, making
and keeping promises of devotion throughout time.

A most untraditional love story, this is the celebrated
tale of Henry DeTamble, a dashing, adventuresome
librarian who involuntarily travels through time, and
Clare Abshire, an artist whose life takes a natural
sequential course. Henry and Clare’s passionate affair w i f e
endures across a sea of time and captures them in an
impossibly romantic trap that tests the strength of
fate and backs in the bonds of love.

The Baskerville typeface is the result
of John Baskerville’s intent to improve upon
the typefaces of William Caslon. Now known
as a transitional serif typeface, Baskerville was
designed in 1757 in Birmingham, England. John
increased the contrast between thick and thin
strokes, making the serifs sharper and more
tapered, and shifted the axis of any rounded
letters to a more vertical position. The curved
strokesare more circular in shape, and the letter
forms became more regular. These changes added
a greater consistency in size and form. However, his
type was severely criticized. Critics complained that
the type would “hurt the eye”
and would be “responsible
for blinding the nation”.
Regarded as a failure,
the typeface was not
revived until the
early 20th century.
Baskerville was a
culmination of a
larger series of
experiments to
boost legibility.

Assignment: Typeface Poster

Choosing from a list of given typefaces, create a modern poster to
showcase the font. Incorporate a character set and a short history of
the typeface; include designer, date, and location of origin.
