The Seminar Component of the Maryland Nonprofit Leadership Program is designed to provide interns with an opportunity to build
valuable skills, explore career choices within the nonprofit sector and gain experience managing and leading public service
organizations. The following dates and times have been included to help you and your supervisor plan for the seminar component of the
Maryland Nonprofit Leadership Program.

within which nonprofits operate, and the role nonprofits play
as service providers, advocates, funders, & supporters.

a Mission

Obtain information on how to plan, evaluate, and build a
program with measurable outcomes.

June 29, 2009 Financial Fundamentals and Fundraising Readiness for TBD. Baltimore Office
Nonprofits
Gain an understanding of nonprofit financials and the
specifics of balance sheets, budgets, audits, and IRS form
990. In addition, obtain an overview of the fundraising
environment, including an understanding of what
organizations need to have in place for successful
fundraising, funding patterns, and the types of fundraising
programs available.
GROUP OUTCOME: Draft a budget and determine where
your money is coming from

An overview of the role volunteers play within organizations
and the sector as a whole and the way in which organizations
should approach the process of recruiting, orienting, and
retaining their volunteer staff.
GROUP OUTCOME: Develop a strategy for engaging
volunteers

Develop a clear understanding of the role of the Board of
Directors in nonprofit organizations and role it serves as the
governing body of the organization.
GROUP OUTCOME: A) Build a board - Develop a
strategy for how to recruiter young leaders, B) Create a
program pitch

PARKING - The lot in front of the building is often full. You may want to try parking on the street or in the lot diagonally
across the street under the highway. Both lots are free.

From Baltimore Inner Harbor: Go south on Light Street past the Maryland Science Center. Continue on Light Street about 7
blocks to E. Ostend Street. Turn right and go about 5 blocks. E. Ostend Street becomes W. Ostend Street. Turn right onto
Sharp Street. Make an immediate right turn into parking lot. (See parking directions above).

From BWI airport (and Prince George’s County via Baltimore Washington Parkway): From Airport Exit, take I-195 W
to MD-295/Baltimore Washington Parkway North toward Baltimore. Go about 6.5 miles into Baltimore. The Baltimore
Washington Parkway becomes Russell Street. Turn right onto Haines Street (between the BP Station and Motel). Go one block
and turn left onto Warner Street. Go 3 short blocks and cross railroad tracks. Turn right onto W. Ostend Street. Go over bridge
and turn left at the traffic light at the end of the bridge. This is Sharp Street. Make an immediate right into parking lot. (See
parking directions above).

From the south (I-95) (from Montgomery County, Columbia): Go north on I-95 to Exit 52 Russell Street. Immediately
after the ramp merges into Russell Street, turn right onto Haines Street (between BP Station and Motel). Go one block and
turn left onto Warner Street. Go 3 short blocks and cross railroad tracks. Turn right onto W. Ostend Street. Go over bridge and
turn left at the traffic light at the end of the bridge. This is Sharp Street. Make an immediate right into parking lot. (See
parking directions above).

From the south (I-97) (from Annapolis, Southern Maryland, lower Eastern Shore): Go north on I-97 to I-695
Baltimore Beltway. Take north exit toward Towson. Go about 2 miles to MD-295/Baltimore Washington Parkway. Take north exit
towards Baltimore. Go about 3 miles into Baltimore. The Baltimore Washington Parkway becomes Russell Street. Turn right
onto Haines Street (between BP Station and Motel). Go one block and turn left onto Warner Street. Go 3 short blocks and cross
railroad tracks. Turn right onto W. Ostend Street. Go over bridge and turn left at light at the end of the bridge onto Sharp
Street. Make an immediate right into parking lot. (See parking directions above).

From the north (Harford County, upper Eastern Shore): Take I-95 south through the Fort McHenry Tunnel. Immediately
after the tunnel, take exit number 55, toward Fort McHenry National Monument/Key Highway. Merge onto E. McComas Street,
which goes under I-95. Go about 1 mile and turn right onto S. Hanover Street. Go about 7 blocks and turn left onto W. Ostend
Street. Turn right onto Sharp Street. Make an immediate right into parking lot. (See parking directions above).

From the west (Ellicott City, Carroll, Frederick, and Western Maryland counties): Take I-70 east to I-695 Baltimore
Beltway. Take south exit toward Glen Burnie. Go about 4 miles to I-95. Go north on I-95 to Exit 52 Russell Street. Immediately
after the ramp merges into Russell Street, turn Right onto Haines Street (between BP Station and Motel). Go one block and
turn left onto Warner Street. Go 3 short blocks and cross railroad tracks. Turn right onto W. Ostend Street. Go over the bridge
