Student Voices Project

Not I, nor anyone else can travel that road for you. You must travel it by yourself. It is not far. It is within reach. Perhaps you have been on it since you were born, and did not know. Perhaps it is everywhereon water and land.
Walt Whitman, Leaves of Grass The Friends Journal Student Voices Project is a new initiative calling all middle school (grades 6-8) and high school (grades 9-12) students to add their voices to the Friends Journal community of readers. We happily welcome submissions from all students at Friends schools (Quaker and non-Quaker) and also Quaker students in other educational venues, such as public schools, non-Quaker private schools, and home school environments.

2013-2014 Prompt: The Testimony of Integrity


Integrity is the state of being complete or undivided. Friends use the term to talk about our commitment to honesty and fairness. How does this value challenge or inspire you? Friends Journal invites submissions in the following genres: poetry, memoir, essay, and visual art. Your writing or artwork should try to encompass the above prompt and speak to your own personal journey of seeking truth and forging your own path.

Submission Guidelines
Submissions should be no more than 2,000 words, but may be much shorter. Artwork may only be submitted as a digital le. Writing should be attached to your email as a doc, docx, pdf, rtf, or Google Doc le. Include at the top left: name, school, grade, email address, and phone number. Make sure your submission has a title. Optional: You may write up to 150 words explaining why you selected one of the particular prompts or what inspired you to create your piece.

Submit to departments@friendsjournal.org. Include Student Voices in the subject line. Submissions deadline: December 31, 2013.
Honorees of the Friends Journal Student Voices Project will be announced in the April 2014 Education issue and ve to ten submissions will be selected for publication there. These honorees will receive a free one-year subscription and will be invited to present their work at a Friends Council on Education conference.
