Experiment no. 1

Implementation of Different Signals Using Fourier Approach

Purpose
The objective of this section is: To view a SIMULINK implementation of a full-wave rectified sine wave using a Fourier series approach.

Background
MATLAB and its associated program SIMULINK can be used to model and implement various system behaviors. In this section, SIMULINK will be used to implement the following equation which represents the 1st 5 terms of the Fourier series of a full-wave rectified sine wave. v(t) = -

where with a frequency of 60 Hz (in this implementation):

The full-wave rectified sine wave equation indicates the need for the following SIMULINK blocks: Constant block with a value A sine block (A cosine block is implemented by using a phase of radians. Use a sample time of 0.1ms = 0.0001sec. Various gain blocks for the multipliers (e.g. A sum block )

In addition, the simulation results are displayed using the scope block.

Implementation
Start MATLAB and then type simulink at the command prompt to start the simulink program. >> simulink Run the simulation by selecting the simulation -> start menu option in the model window. Double-click on the scope to maximize it and view all 6 waveforms. (Doubleclicking on a block allows one to view parameters and change them where permitted)

Modify some of the block parameters to implement a 120Hz full-wave rectified signal using 3 fourier series terms.

Simulation Procedures
1. Implement other signal forms from fourier series approach using 3 fourier series terms. (square wave, saw tooth waves, etc.) 2. Implement 120Hz and 60Hz carrier frequency. 3. Print your data and results and discuss your observations. 4. Try to familiarize those blocks you used in the MATLAB simulink and try to discuss it briefly based on your own understanding. 5. Make a brief conclusion on what you have done in this simulation.

Conclusion
This laboratory experiment entitled Implementation of Different Signals using fourier approachis the activity that introduce the group in using simulink. We learned how to use different blocks and modify its parameters to what we are instructed to do. We are able to view a simulink implementation of the different waves using the fourier series approach. Hence, the group has its glance on more exciting and challenging experiments that SIMULINK can offer.
